For some reason, I took to this album immediately when it first came out. The sarcastic desperation evident throughout much of the writing (all Waters') seemed quite cathartic to me at it's release and still today. I'd say this isn't an album for casual listening but one that you need to set aside the time for and dive into like a novel. Also agree with others here saying this is some of Waters' most powerful song writing.
Not castigating die hard Floyd fans who can't grip this album, but in my eyes its one of Waters's finest hours, probably a little to true to life for some. "as the windshield melts & tears evaporate, leaving only charcoal to defend"
I think the whole album is a continuation to The Wall. In an even more insane alternate reality, I see The Wall, The Final Cut and The Pros And Cons Of Hitchhiking as a soft of three-part, self-biographic, ultra concept album by Waters. But then again that's just me.
I do not own or know every Pink Floyd Album, I own a vast majority of them. My first Purchase was "Whish You Were Here", Which is My pick as their best, but The Final Cut is also right up there as one of their finest.
But I must admit I often find peace within when I listen to their songs, these guys have helped me a lot of times, also SRV's Tin Pan Alley or Little Wing will also (PMU) Pick Me Up, that is.

Still I love this just as much as any other Pink Floyd album.. :-))
oh God, what beautiful great memories are coming back, I LOVE PINK FLOYD, the best group ever in history .. Roger Waters RULES. AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME :)))))))
This song...is about Rogers thought of the band coming to and end...he was crying...you ever cry..and try to see..thru fish stained eyes..its poetic......there will never be a band that exudes poetry so well

It's sort of sad because this generation can't really grasp what this album tries to communicate and no future generations will either. It's a concept album that perfectly reflects the ethos of the era. I only say it's sad because if you understand what the lyrics mean then it's a much deeper experience. I feel privileged to get to experience it like that.
There isn't a more touching album than The Final Cut in the whole of music industry. I love it, it impresses me to the deepest part of me. To me this is the best Floyd album after The Wall. The only reason why this alblum was criticized is because it was preceded by such masterpieces as Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall. But for me that doesn't throw a shadow over The Final Cut.
This is the final cut. Roger said what he needed to say and then. See ya, wouldn't want to be you. Roger is PF! Listen to Amused to Death and you will no longer doubt.

Roger was leaving a market one day and a lady stopped him to tell him how much the album meant to her, her father having been killed in WWII as well.... Roger walked out with his bag of potatoes and thought, "Good enough!"

What? What? Most people say Final Cut is the worst Pink Floyd album? It's one of the best! The most emotional album ever. People just don't get what Pink Floyd is about.
@MazeFiguresAnimator The problem is not with the album itself, but with the fact that rather than being a Pink Floyd album, it's more of a Roger Waters album.Listen to his solo albums and you will understand what I'm saying (or perhaps you already had).
@MazeFiguresAnimator there is no suck thing as the worst Pink Floyd album. I think there all amazing even with syd barret... or however you spell his name lol
So Roger Waters had/has some pretty serious mother/father issues to work though but you have to admit that the man is a genius. What I would give to have been able to see him and David Gilmour live..
I think this is the most incredible, honest, heartbreaking song I've ever heard. And everyone can relate to at least one lyric in here. That's what makes it so fucking good.
Well I would say Roger Waters are one of the best songwriters in music history, but I wouldn't say fuck the Beatles or anything. The Beatles laid down the foundation for bands like Pink Floyd. So good things lead to better things. Without each other they wouldn't be possible.
This album was introduced to me as a young teenager and got me out of the Pop rut that plagues so many "tweens". It still holds as my favorite to this day. Not a song on it is lacking in meaning and substance.
This is how a good-I mean epic-song should be. It doesn't need to have autotune, make you move, have the most original lyrics, have a solo with 2000 notes in 10 seconds. It has to have feeling, a meaning. Which clearly this song does.
Roger Waters is the best songwriter in history. Fuck the Beatles, MJ, or whatever.
This kind of songs are what keeps World War III from happening. Roger's father would be proud.
@buddy39914 I completely agree. It's disappointing how few people now even know Pink Floyd and even more disappointing that the older generations don't care to share this with us. Can't believe I went through so much of life without this as background.
this is my all time favorite album, and song....brings me back to high school and good places....really a Roger waters solo album....listened to it hundreds of times...but unbelievably great
How come no one addresses his suicide threat? He holds the blade in his trembling hands, but just then the phone rings and averts it. What the hel do you think THE FINAL CUT refers to? SUICIDE! the final cut across his wrists - saved by a p[hone call.Absolutely no one refers to this.
I don't know, but since Roger left the band, Pink Floyd seemed to lose their edge lyrically. They are still a fantastic band, and immensely talented musically. But they just ain't the same without Roger's input. Roger wasn't scared to call a spade a spade, but since he left, the band seemed to lose that, and became a bit 'clinical' and over engineered in my opinion, although still very enjoyable. I think 'The Division Bell' was a brave attempt to regain what was lost, good, but no cigar.
@RDEE1976 dont get me wrong, i love all the pink floyd albums, well to be honest you cant always love them all, but the final cut is just somehow above them all for me, it just has that "thing" that makes it perfect. i can listen to it 20 times a day and never get bored with it.
@dahellinside i love this album also and think this particular song is up there with some of the best songs that have ever been written, pure raw emotion, fantastic reference to Waters' own situation at the time e.g., 'would you sell your story to rolling stone', this was not about the 2nd world war this was about his own marriage..such beauty!
I got this cassette for x-mas in 1988 and had it for over a year (unopened) until i heard this song on the radio...started listening to it a little, then I had to go to the hospital for a week and brought this along. It's one of those albums that you need to here over and over again to truly understand how awesome it is... to this day I still have this CD...the only Pink Floyd CD I own! I still listen to it without skipping a song! How many CD's can you say you don't skip forward?
Back2tfuture, i was tempted to attack you when i first started reading your opinion on The Final Cut but you have a grip on what your talking about. Mate i love Animals, Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, Wish You Were Here. But The Final Cut is my 2nd fav album, just behind The Wall. I love it. The lyrics are fucking brilliant!
This is pretty much my favorite Floyd record. I find it has the definitive Roger Lyrics, and the most incredible emotion and tone in Gilmour's playing. It isn't a perfect record - but it has a sound and a feel that is all its own, and is just as good as anything they ever did before. It is a lesser-known album, though, for sure. I play in a popular Floyd tribute act, and whenever we play Not Now John and The Gunner's Dream at shows people are a bit confused ha ha :D
i always heard that all the songs on the Final Cut were originally supposed to be on The Wall but the record company wouldn’t let them release a 3 disk album so they had to take some songs out.
has anyone else heard that or is it just false info?
@Qman132 It's sorta that, but also David Gilmour had some conflicts with Roger Waters trying to make the Wall all about him. David felt that Roger brought alot of rejected material from the Wall into the Final Cut, this along with conflicting artistic views eventually led to the splitting of the band. At least I'm pretty sure this is what happened.
It was, but there wasnt much music to the album, aside from the occasional guitar solo, it was mostly just Roger singing, where is the rock and roll that Dark side of the Moon, Wish You were here, Animals, and The Wall had?
The only real rock n roll song on the album is Not now John and that song was terrible. I have a hard time listening to the final cut, thats why I only have the Gunners Dream and the Final Cut(song) on my Ipod from that album. They were the only good songs.
used to not like this album, and then one day i was in a bad mood and i just started singing this song in the shower (air guitar and all) and Ive loved it ever since.
@masterofthenight0 Wright wasnt in PF at the time... Mason was mainly a studio musician... Gilmour had a bit bigger role than Mason, but not much... I guess thats why this is a Roger Waters album, preformed by Pink Floyd
One of the greatest albums of all times ! (as Kanye West would say)...Some critics gave it great reviews, some not... and it didn't sell well compared to all their albums of the 70's, but Roger tells a story about coming out of the market with his bag of potatoes, and a woman recognized him and stopped him to tell him how much The Final Cut meant to her, having also lost her dad in WW II.... and as Roger walked away he said he smiled and thought, "Good enough !"
I love this album and this song...I know that it's one of those albums that people absolutely love or hate...and I think that's what's great about it! It doesn't elicit any so-so emotion...that's why it's powerful.
What? What? Most people say Final Cut is the worst Pink Floyd album? It's one of the best! The most emotional album ever. People just don't get what Pink Floyd is about.
MazeFiguresAnimator 8 months ago 50
@MazeFiguresAnimator
it is not one of the best,it is the best album!
zepp1206 8 months ago
@MazeFiguresAnimator The problem is not with the album itself, but with the fact that rather than being a Pink Floyd album, it's more of a Roger Waters album.Listen to his solo albums and you will understand what I'm saying (or perhaps you already had).
ThePinkMadcap 5 months ago
@MazeFiguresAnimator there is no suck thing as the worst Pink Floyd album. I think there all amazing even with syd barret... or however you spell his name lol

So Roger Waters had/has some pretty serious mother/father issues to work though but you have to admit that the man is a genius. What I would give to have been able to see him and David Gilmour live..

Beatles are nothing like Pink Floyd lol. PF are the best!

I think this is the most incredible, honest, heartbreaking song I've ever heard. And everyone can relate to at least one lyric in here. That's what makes it so fucking good.

Ozzie2113 8 months ago
Well I would say Roger Waters are one of the best songwriters in music history, but I wouldn't say fuck the Beatles or anything. The Beatles laid down the foundation for bands like Pink Floyd. So good things lead to better things. Without each other they wouldn't be possible.

This album was introduced to me as a young teenager and got me out of the Pop rut that plagues so many "tweens". It still holds as my favorite to this day. Not a song on it is lacking in meaning and substance.

What the fuck am I listening to?
Is this one of the best songs ever, or what?
This is how a good-I mean epic-song should be. It doesn't need to have autotune, make you move, have the most original lyrics, have a solo with 2000 notes in 10 seconds. It has to have feeling, a meaning. Which clearly this song does.
Roger Waters is the best songwriter in history. Fuck the Beatles, MJ, or whatever.
This kind of songs are what keeps World War III from happening. Roger's father would be proud.

@buddy39914 Agreed 1000 percent except for the comment about the Beatles. Nobody says fuck you to the beatles if you love music !!!
moonlightonariver 8 months ago
@moonlightonariver I'm saying that Roger Waters writes better songs than Lennon.
buddy39914 8 months ago
@buddy39914 I completely agree. It's disappointing how few people now even know Pink Floyd and even more disappointing that the older generations don't care to share this with us. Can't believe I went through so much of life without this as background.

Tman88croc 10 months ago
I don't know, but since Roger left the band, Pink Floyd seemed to lose their edge lyrically. They are still a fantastic band, and immensely talented musically. But they just ain't the same without Roger's input. Roger wasn't scared to call a spade a spade, but since he left, the band seemed to lose that, and became a bit 'clinical' and over engineered in my opinion, although still very enjoyable. I think 'The Division Bell' was a brave attempt to regain what was lost, good, but no cigar.

RDEE1976 10 months ago
@RDEE1976 dont get me wrong, i love all the pink floyd albums, well to be honest you cant always love them all, but the final cut is just somehow above them all for me, it just has that "thing" that makes it perfect. i can listen to it 20 times a day and never get bored with it.
dahellinside 9 months ago
@dahellinside i love this album also and think this particular song is up there with some of the best songs that have ever been written, pure raw emotion, fantastic reference to Waters' own situation at the time e.g., 'would you sell your story to rolling stone', this was not about the 2nd world war this was about his own marriage..such beauty!

i dont know why the fan voted this as the worst album. This album is full with emotions and i really love this album.

I love it. The lyrics are fucking brilliant!
coasters2010 10 months ago
This is pretty much my favorite Floyd record. I find it has the definitive Roger Lyrics, and the most incredible emotion and tone in Gilmour's playing. It isn't a perfect record - but it has a sound and a feel that is all its own, and is just as good as anything they ever did before. It is a lesser-known album, though, for sure. I play in a popular Floyd tribute act, and whenever we play Not Now John and The Gunner's Dream at shows people are a bit confused ha ha :D
Wileylikethehawk 10 months ago
i always heard that all the songs on the Final Cut were originally supposed to be on The Wall but the record company wouldn’t let them release a 3 disk album so they had to take some songs out.
has anyone else heard that or is it just false info?
Qman132 11 months ago 2
@Qman132 It's sorta that, but also David Gilmour had some conflicts with Roger Waters trying to make the Wall all about him. David felt that Roger brought alot of rejected material from the Wall into the Final Cut, this along with conflicting artistic views eventually led to the splitting of the band. At least I'm pretty sure this is what happened.

There are only 2 songs I like on The FInal Cut, The Final Cut and The Gunners Dream. The rest of the album left much to be desired.
As a big long time Pink Floyd fan I was really dissapointed in this album.
FalconFBDT64 11 months ago
@FalconFBDT64 shame u feel like that, it was very moving
dawnybawny 11 months ago
@dawnybawny

Roger waters is the genius behind this album , ofcourse with the help of the masters ,Gilmour and Wright and Mason
masterofthenight0 11 months ago
