First I hope all wouldbe falconers really really consider if you have the time, energy, and money to give this sport and these animals the dedication and husbandry they deserve. What about vacations? Who will look after the bird (untrained people should not look after raptors). Do you work full time? You you have a family? A raptor takes a minimum of an hour a day to maintain. To train a young hawk takes much more time. Falconry is a way of life.
If you have been thinking about what I wrote below for months and have a sense of what is envolved, (THEN and only then) you should contact the local DNR and local falconry association and try and convince them you will become a falconer no matter what. A good step in really convincing them both is to spend 6-12 months reading everything you can about falconry (many books, internet forums, DVDs, etc). Then maybe a falconer will take you under his wing (pun intended).
hi ya i need a answer quick ive got a red tail hawk in my garden its got bells on it how can i call it sum1 has lost it so im trying to call it if i aint got a glove will it piece my skin with its feet hw should i call it help please!!!!!!
If it won't come back to its falconer it will not likely come to you. Falconers lose birds on occasion - its just a sad part of being a falconer. You should contact the local falconers association or DNR so that the falconer can try and trap it again. You need a license and permits to do this (and KNOWLEDGE) - otherwise its highly illegal and dangerous to the bird and U. Join NAFEX and IFF (both falconer internet forums). Post a notice as to where you live and word may get back to the falconer.
Hi Nevada...you seem to assume I'm not using 150 feet of line...(which I was). And as for drag on her hips....she's only lifting about 12 feet of 1/4 braided nylon while the rest drags freely on the ground inducing less than 4 ounces of weight (drag set of scales across the grass and you'll see what I mean)...not much weight for a big female RT (that hawk is fat now and over 4.5 pounds in weight)...she can lift a 4.5 pound hare into a tree....creance work is great for fitness...
I think that much creance is too much. Its a lot of drag on the birds hips. I use 100-150 and put the spool in the middle of me and the bird. Then you still get a nice long flight and only half the creance weight. But seriously, if she flies that far...GO HAWKING!!!! :)
