So many detachments here in the late 1980's - including 1990 APC - Aug90 - 5Sqn - Just as Saaddam went into Kuwait. Next thing you know, it's Dharan here I come. Akrotiri - what a place - as close a place as Heaven on Earth as you'll ever find. Closest I can get these days is Sylvana's Kebab House - every single time I return on holiday - every year - Kokinelli, Shish, Sheftalia, Haloumi, Chop & Chicken and more Polyfilla (Tahini) Bliss :-)
I grew up on RAF Akrotiri. From 1967 until 1986. Awesome place for a child to grow up. Frustrated though, I now live in Cyprus but can't go onto camp to show my wife and son where I grew up....
@61bug was there between 72 and 74 and agree with your sentiments. Apparently you can get on the base through prior arrangement with the station commander, but it is escorted and I believe you can't hang around all day!.

changed since i was there in 1959 control tower was tin shed put brolly up when it rained roof leaked ops room was a tent met office was back of old lorry up at 33oam to go shackleton patrols round island what a life issue of two hundred cigarettes a week cost 50p bottle of rum £1
