To all you opera fans, check out Sissel's version of this. Sissel is the absolute bomb, and her version of O Mio Babbino Caro is breathtaking. I kid you not.
@YouTubr889 what do you mean? how come? i dont know anything about her, but her music carries a lot of pain, i wanna know what she's been through to make such deep shit, beautiful
Agreed. Even if this was her infamous "worst concert", it's still far better than many sopranos who sing opera today (I won't name names). Callas never lost her voice. By this time in '74, she had physical problems and an illness. She was taking medication and pills (which ultimately killed her) and it's still natural that a voice "ages" and gets worn out after many years. She had a long career from the 40's, through the 50's and 60's. That's 30 years!
Something is funky with this clip but I've heard it before and it compare to the London are night and day. She worked hard over the course of this tour and by the end in Japan she was getting her footing back. Remarkable unique artist and we will never see her like again.
TH33X3CUTION3R, I agree that both Callas and Dessay have shrieky and metallic high notes. However, while Callas was a great actress, Dessays acting is dismal, she is often overacting and pathetically tends to compensate for her small childish voice with buffoonish histrionics.
To me she's perfect..well I can't sing opera of course..
But I always think that emotion and passion are more important than techniques in all kinds of art. I think her age add all those delicate things to the song, and I believe this is what young singners can't do.
Maybe for some of the opera-lovers there ARE flaws in this performance, but this performance, which is recorded one year before the year in which I was born, has touched me deeply.
@19751222 is just, look at her face, her expression. even though she is suffering because of being unable to control her high register, her passion and feelings are more powerful and so, the theme is perfect.
come on guys, it's the singing of a 55 years old woman. not perfect but there's again her special interpretation, and her perfect italian diction. such a shame she stopped singing, she died after that.
oh my god. everything was lost here... and she looks so vulnerable., she needed the audience´s love so much. she always break my heart in a way or another... maria, you´ll live forever.
All I know about Opera is that I love the way it sounds and relaxes me. But I know this woman is great because when I was about 6 or 7 I saw a commercial and they were playing this song and I fell in love with it. I never knew the name and finally I found it! I love this
Immo, every day that goes by erodes yours, filaredo's and a few other fans of Netrebko's, credibility. You are not even fighting a reasonable battle here. To say Callas was not great, is an exercise in futility. If you get off on criticizing her, which I think you do, that's the only pay-off you'll get. The world generally speaking,

Mtnmanjt Callas the greatest opera singer ?? Are you crazy- arse licker?
Hahahahahahaha...........! Folks, please don't compare the new worldclass singer with the old shouting donkey!!!
Today Callas would be third class and sings only a advertising jingle for washing powder or cat food. She's too ugly for the opera houses and the new and young audience.
After Callas Dessay was the last of the shouting hags on stage.
she really isn't shouting... some of the new people in my opinion dont have much passion for opera as some of the older ones do... but also if u haven't noted uve been marked as the lowest rated person on any comment ive ever seen. your character really is questionable because even if you don't like someones voice you should be polite about it. an well shit how does your voice sound?!?! sorry i dont normally go off but if u don't like it don't lisen and let other form his or her own opinions.
Did anybody listen to the applause at the last couple of seconds??? They are going f'n crazy!! Comments on Youtube against Callas are all bullshit garbage, as far as I'm concerned. Callas is the greatest opera singer of all time, no ifs, ands, or buts. There is only one, and there will be only one, La Divina in this world, her name is MARIA CALLAS.
Of course she was happy ! happy to be back where she belongs : the stage, in front of her public ! Her voice was ruined ? who cares ! she knew that, and the public also knew that ! The people wanted just to come and see her to say "Thank you for what you gave to us" and that's the most important. All the critics and the rest is bullsh*t !
This sounds exactly what di Stefano replied to Arianna Stassinopoulos Huffington in an aggressive interview....:)
I am sure she was happy of being back on stage and feel the unconitioned love of her fans, but for the HUGE respect that she had for Art it must have been heartbreaking for her to know that she was just a shadow of what she used to be.
Callas's worst perfomance is better than any other's soprano's in her wildest dreams. Bravo, Maria, even when you sang badly, you were still the best.
@arallets jajaajj you´re soo right!!!! the trouble with the other sopranos is that they do not give that feeling and emotion to their sing so, and many of them close too much the mouth when singing. There´s no doubt of the force that Callas had and even more at her best time!
@JCBernal89 Ah yes ...feeling ...many of these seem to forget they are singing a song for us ....remember Bob Dylan ....''Hey Mr Tambourine man play a song for me''...some classical musicians turn out terribel tripe ...no names ....I have to live in this place!!
No. It shouldnt be so fast. She is trying to convince her father. He loves him, and love her love to. She feels sad. This Arias its SO MUCH SWEET and TENDER when perform at real tempo.
My guess is that, at that age, she was not as confident about being able to hold her breath support for as long as she used to - and that's quite understandable. Whatever sound she was able to produce was still solid and beautiful in my opinion.
its sad to have seen such a change in her voice from her days of youth. Her voice is still undoubtedly beautiful but you can hear that she is more strained
Her tone is unique, she has been a great artist and she acts the whole time the girli sound is a placed use of her remindet time as a young woman and this slice it out and brings the points to her . BRAVA CALLAS BRAVA TEBALDI !
This is late Callas at her best. The singing is lovely and touching, and the hands are amazing. I wonder why she didn't take to singing lieder or French art songs; she would have been wonderful in Debussy at that stage in her career.
She is definately great and even better than in their beginnings. Mature voice is heard, mature practice, mature feeling, mature control. It cannot be repeated it cannot be sang by any other singer, it will not. Lyrics are heard so clearly, none can imitate the natural gift she has. A voice of an angel, saying good bye.
It's a shame she didn't keep going after this, because to me, at least, it seems her voice was steadily getting better. Compared to the recital in London the year before, this is actually quite good. All the same, a very touching farewell to her fans.
there's a bootleg recording of her rehearsing "ah, perfido!" just a year before she died, and by all accounts her voice was in very good shape, better than it was in the 60s and certainly these last concerts. so there's at least some truth in the assertion that her vocal decline had more to do with a psychological block than anything purely physical.
:) W Maria
Callas didn't just sing and played roles on the stage, she LIVED for the stage. About the voice no one should comment. I love her is this performance. This is her "good-bye" to the public. At least respect that.
i refere the felling, the storyteller, earing this, dispite you dont understand italian, you know what she means! my comment is that... not about the voice but the felling!
i think she was fenomenal...she sing like in first years of her career... with the same felling and the same spirit! she was a terible lost to the music

Callas was so fast, that if her voice was
failing she could change the strength,
redirect. Of course she knew when her
voice was not going to cave. This of course meant any musician performing with her, including the conductor would
have to be on their toes. The battle with
her voice made every performance even
more riveting. Are we sadists or what?
This was still quiet a remarkable
performance.

"She sing like in first years of her career... with the same felling and the same spirit!"
Are you kidding me? You obviously haven't heard her in her prime, then. This performance was... There are no words for it, but definitely not good.
