ok, mr silkrodere, mr k is actually throwing the nagasaki form of the shuriken.... i believe you are speaking of the more commonly viewed shuriken being the naruto form which is shaped like a star.... GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT!
If its no spin u should consider using something else... Most commercial knives are best for spin throwing - try learning half spin with your kunai. ALso larger knives throw better -
Kunai meaning small throwing sword its defently not a shuriken or kunai but little known kai trin which basicly means kai meaning death and trin meaning dager so you made a kai trin or at least thats what my tai jutsu trainer says...reply pleas
@frogglemedia this type of shuriken is know as "bo shuriken" and it is supposedly the most common type, most likely due to the ease of access of materials to build it. nails, metal rods and other things.
@silkroadere sorry, but your pretty close to being dead wrong. kunai are thrown daggers. shuriken come in many shapes and sizes, including needles, 5 point stars, 4 point stars. box shape, dart, and last but not least.. the demon windmill i am sure you are familiar with is a Fuma.. but fuma are fictional and impossible to throw.. unless your naruto.. which you are most certainly not.
anyway, use google next time.. look up the word shuriken.. look up the woord kunai.. there are definitions.
@silkroadere and kunai are not even really meant to be weapons, they are thrown dagger variant of a masons trowel used by practitioners of ninjutsu because japan outlawed the use of martial arts. of course those sneaky japs found ways around the rules.. and no i am not trying to insult the japanese.. japs is just easier to type.
I bought a couple of 6 in pieces of metal, and am going to try making shuriken out of those.
I didn't get any pieces as large as 10 in, so I think I will just have to use those for a while.
I got 1018 steel, so I don't know if heat treating it after I make one is going to affect hardness.
Thank you for your advice, I will try to acquire longer shuriken in the future, Also, I backed my target with cardboard, and I can mount it on a sheet of wood that I have.
The reason I use short shuriken is because the first method of throwing I heard about was Negishi Ryu, and the shuriken of that school are a bit short.
My new target will be cardboard on wood, or insulation if i can get it.
The only problem with cardboard is that it creates a loud noise if I do not strike it correctly.
I'm also planning on crafting my own shuriken out of metal, using a grinding wheel. The ones I use now are nails and seem to be made out of poor metal, I sharpened a few of the points but the tip bent when thrown at a hard target.
Thank you for commenting and I will take into consideration not to harm the tree.

Ok..., good movie, but
this is not a shurican, a shurikan is like a star, this is a kunai (trowing knife).4*
silkroadere 3 years ago
I agree, its not a shurican nor a shurikan, but its not a kunai either.
Naruto isnt accurate, shuriken are just thrown weapons, normally implying either the star shaped ones or these.

My height is about 5' 5" and my hand length is 6.5 inches, from wrist to tip of middle finger
frogglemedia 3 years ago
The target will be broken quickly.
I suggest to you that you make new target.
I think that 10 inches long are ideal when I suppose it from your body type.
And even the iron that is soft,if only a tip does quenching, it become strong.
Please put it in aqua of atmospheric temperature after heating it till about 1 inch tip becomes orange.
When it is not steel, water temperature does not need to be strict.

Not bad!
I like the way you practice by throwing at a foam target strapped to a tree.
Keep working on that distance!
sinmaiXkid 3 years ago
Thanks, the kitchen knives i'm using now (borrowed with permission) are actually sticking to the tree so I'm practicing with them now too.

Please comment,
anyone knowledgeable please tell me if I'm doing anything wrong, tips, etc.
frogglemedia 3 years ago
I think you become better if you practice it more.
Because you do not use an useless force, you will advance.
When there is next points to improve.
1-Please make target with stronger construction material
2-Sharpen a tip of Shuriken more sharply
3-Turn length of Shuriken into about 11 inches
4-Make a part of a thread of handle more smoothly
I think that probably you progress greatly when you change the making of Shuriken.
I do not understand about your throwing yet because distance is near.
HouzanSuzuki 3 years ago
By the way, how old are you?
Because when I cant understand your standing height and length of a finger, I cannot be settled by length of your Shuriken.
In addition, I do not like a performance to add weak target to "the tree which lived".
Please be careful with it not to injure the tree which lived.
HouzanSuzuki 3 years ago
My shuriken are 6 inches long, 11 inches seems like a stretch since my hands aren't all that big.
The shuriken do not penetrate the target and strike the tree, the points are dull and normally bounce off if I miss the target.
