The thing he wanted to do for a change was to give a character "hair" by using a covering on there head instead of actual hair. (just like he did for Yukimuras leader) the headdress symbolizes his hair. Besides red flowing hair looks 20 times cooler then what ever hair he really has :P

Ok, I see what you're saying, but let's look at the facts behind that fight.

1. Date was injured, he got shot an episode before.

2. He's fightin Kojuro, the one man that knows him better than anyone.

3. Kojuro was exploiting his weakness by attacking his blindside which is on the right, so Date, while injured was still able to block in time.

4. Kojuro is not weak or a pushover which you will see in the next episode.

All of that was said without sarcasm or cynicism.
