Hello, I see so many folks using wvo, I just got a conversion kit for my Mercedes 240 D diesel but I can't seem to find any restaurants that are willing to let me pick up the oil.... they all look at my funny and say "oh no, we have a contract"... what is the secret to finding a supplier?
@BesidesDaniel- I always recommend finding oil first them convert. 1) try to get place your frequent most. It's hard to get big chains. Local mom & pop seem to be the best 2) many restuarants get paid now so you need to show value. Either environmentally (using oil for local fuel rather than put in dog food, cosmetics etc.) or advertise for them. I have a clean truck so I have their logo sticker on the back & promote them all the time. Create color flyer explaining this. Be reliable & clean
I've been using SVO on my 02' F250 w/7.3DI also for the past 2 years. Nice video! I would of probably would of mounted the fill-in somewhere diff than the door jam just because of the accident spills and smell close to your sitting area. Thanks
@azrios - sorry for the delay - THANKS! Glad to hear you running for a couple years now too! The cap is not breathable so there are no fumes. I have had a couple overflows, but drools out the truck. I have also had it burp a couple times and splash inside - that was not fun :(. This was the hidden location from the kit and supplier of the system. Tank is undermounted in the frame rail (40 gal)
@nz7476 Thanks again - Biofuelstechnologies formerly Dinofuelalternatives sells the kit and tank for the powerstrokes and Dodge. Not cheap at all. I did the install myself over the course of a long weekend. Saved me about $800 to $1000 in labor. I did the full system with tank, gauges, switches and all. Took over a year in fuel savings to pay it back but already paid for itself and MORE. Now it's all money in my pocket :-)
Where did you get the whole house filters? What brand? Also where did you get your pump? Great system! I have a Excursion also & am getting the final system put on.
@dp8002 - Thanks. All the questions you asked are answered in the comments below. Hate to keep repeating and lose the chain. I hope your build goes well too!
Thanks!! My 40 gal tank is undermounted in the framerail so I loose no cargo space. Built through biofuelstechnologies . Wasn't cheap but is pretty sweet. I've had ZERO enigine or fuel issues so far (knock on wood) -Going on 30K miles veg oil. I heat the fuel properly, purge properly, and filter the best I can. Don't do one of those and you can mess things up. The IDI's are a little more forgiving I hear. My stock tank is pure diesel. An italian tune so often helps burn stuff off.
A floating pickup hose could be a great idea! Never seen one done that wouldn't get bound up somewhere from top to bottm. My oil is pretty clean to start with. When I purge the bottom I maybe get a table spoon of dirty oil and drops of mixed water mess. The cone keeps it over 5 gallon away from the pick up location (which faces upward (elbow), pulling the clean oil down, so it's all good on this set-up.....even if I forget to purge MANY times....which I don't . Thanks for the ideas though!!!
@vegipower Hi - Very clean and nice setup. Will be looking to put the same in my garage...err...filling station, soon. I have a question regarding your excursion. I'm curious about how you mounted the auxiliary tank, as well as if you have had any problems with the direct injection on the powerstroke as opposed to the 7.3 IDI's... Lots of the forums out there suggest the IDI is a bit better suited for WVO. Thanks for posting and for the ideas!
Don't you think a floating hose would be better to pump the oil? The level the pump is plugged *may* take some of the goo in the very bottom. Why taking the risk? (also when you are busy, which i understood was your case, you are more subject to make errors, such as forgetting to let the goo out.... or whatever)
How do you pick up the oil from your spots? Do you just load up "cubbies" in your excursion, or do you pump the oil out of a waste oil bin? If you are pumping it, what type of pump are you using for the collection and how are you storing it in your excursion when you get home? I am assuming once home you pump it into the settling tank or do you dump it? Just trying to figure out a process end to end saving myself some money on trial and error
@wattsobx I have 2 locations now. One puts the oil back in the cubies (gave them a big funnel) the other I have a 55 gallon drum out back with locking lid & hatch opening for them to dump. I pick up 40 gal every 2 weeks. I bring a 12v Tuthill pump w/ hose and cheap filler nozzle, acid free optima battery (spills can be bad) and 9 cubies. All fit great in back of Excursion. Takes 20 min strt to finish to pump oil. Any bad stuff goes in their old oil dumpster. come home and pour in settle tank
One last question. Your 3 stage filtration kit can you provide a link to the who makes the kit and the filters? Really great design. For the pump that goes into the car, does that run off your northern tool pump or is it just gravit that allows you to pump it into the suv. Thanks!
@wattsobx The same pump transfers from one tank to the other and ALSO pumps to the vehicle (closing/opening valves). The filter kit was from Complete filtration services in Greenville, NC . Not sure if this will work cfsco.net/whhowafisebi2.html. They have it for $89 now..... I thought I paid less. Get my filters from them in bulk too.
@wattsobx I had a local welder drill out the holes and braze in the fittings for about $75. Typical welding would not work due to the thin guage steel with thick cast iron fitting, A couple of the welds have cracked due to some stress, but some JB Weld has worked great. They do make pvc style fittings with o-rings that can fit in the holes. Not sure about the 180 degree heat though. good luck
Hey thats a really awesome setup. So you put the wvo in the first heating tank, and once it has heated, you open the drain plug at the bottom and all the water drains out? Thanks.
@RememberOne13 Thanks! The oil I get has very little water in it, if any. But yes, I purge off any dirt, food, heavy fats, water etc. at the btm of the cone once it cools and sits for a couple days after heating. Then it's ready to transfer through the filters to the holding tank. I have noticed the 1 micron filter, if cold oil or gets waxed up, can collapse once and while and cause restriction and high pressures.
would you consider installing one for me in Venice, CA,? what price would you charge for travel, parts and labor? I love that system and would like to get started with someone who has experience instead of wasting a year on trial and error.I know myself. Please email at gallodp@gmail.com THANKS!
It is a clearwater pump from Northern tool. I just wired a switch in the top of it. The extended warranty they offer is worth it for that one! The pump was on sale for $40 I think.
@vegipower I have been looking at the systems for filtering vegi oil and this is definitely the best system I have seen. I wonder if you could e-mail me some more detailed pictures of this setup. I think I have all the info just by the video, but some closer pics will be helpful. What are you using for the pressure relief on there. I bought a pump from harbor freight to put on the system. I am trying to get a used system for my truck. Thanks for the great information.
@devoygoff Thanks! It's been working well. I have noticed that differnet brands of filters flow differently and have not dialed it in perfectly yet. Cold weather and oil with some fats in it can wax up the filters between batches..
I can send you more pictures later this week, but not sure where to find your email?
@devoygoff Sorry for the delay on getting back to you on the e-mail. I am at devoygoff@hotmail.com for the pictures. I am also wondering about your fuel source, is it a fairly clean oil when you pick it up? The stuff I have been looking at around scares me to even think about running in my truck. Any good suggestions?
Hey i have a system some what like yours set up, but a little different with the heating. I was wondering if you could say what kind of pump you are using? I went through two electric "vane and gear" ones in about 4 years for the past 3 years i just been using a hand vane pump.
wanting to do a set up and wondering why no one uses an old hot water heater to settle? im not sure i understand why people do a centrifuge if this is sufficient too? thanks for posting
THANKS FOR THE REPLY DO U HAVE A PROGRAMMER OR ANYTHING ON THAT TRUCK? AND 1 MORE QUESTION YOUR NOT FROM THE EAST COAST ARE YOU? I REALLY WANT SOMEONE TO HELP ME MAKE 1 OF THESES SYSTEMS I WOULD LOVE NOT TO BUY DIESEL ANYMORE I HAVE A 01 7.3 F250 AND WANNA RUN THIS TYPE OF SYSTEM
@torrell1243 -No programmer yet but that is comming soon. The higher idle tune is important for long idles. I figure I'm saving about $3600/yr on fuel at $3.50/gal. I live outside Raleigh , NC . The system I used is biofuelstechnologies, formerly Dinofuelalternatives Not cheap, but has already paid for itself and more. There are several other systems, kits, or home made version done with parts and pieces. I installed the kit, but have never built my own.
@torrell1243 Thanks! I just finished pouring in another 45 gallons to process tonight. So far I have over 20,000 oil miles on the Excursion. It runs absolutely great and, knock on wood, have had no issues with the engine or performance. You can't tell the difference between Diesel and oil except it is ever so slightly quieter! I know some with well over 100k mils on oil with no issues. It all depends on the quality of the oils and your system. Mine is fully heated 2-tank system w/ purge timer
hi. Im loving the set up. I am currently buying new vege oil cheaper than diesel . It is stll expensive. So I am going to copy your design. i have found a restaurant who has waste oil for me. I seen it. It very dirty. White and gloupy. Kept outside in a big drum. How do you collect your waste oil. Do you have some sort of moble pump to pump from the waste drums in the restaurants?
@mrkennethporter - I appreciate it! Sounds like a lot of water in that oil. Is it covered? I leave a 55 gal drum with locked lid and screen mesh next to the other big container (no issues with stealing!). I have a 12v elec pump (northern tool), marine battery, and all my cubie jugs to pump it out every 2-3 weeks. Takes about 15 min start to finish. Extra oils put in other collection bin. Make sure they are not putting the washout/ junk in YOUR container. Find a good source to make life easy!
@Smokabowlson -The funnel was dropped shipped from a company called Boss Buck bossbuck.com. They sell mostly deer hunting/feeding supplies. It was part # 10.BD55 Not sure if they carry it anymore. I did not see it online. It came with the threaded bottom and welded right on.
Nice setup ! I will also be building something similar soon.. I'm converting my Gen 1 powerstroke right now... And I also will be filtering in my garage ! Thanks for sharing the video.
this is the cleanest set up I've noticed yet. Thanks for the video. I'm just now begining my journey to use wvo for alternative fuel. If you or anyone on here will help, when asking resturants about collecting their oil, are you selective on what type of resturant? For example a catfish joint other than a burger joint?
@clintonious - Thank you! It is working very well still. As for restaurants try to find a place you actually like. In my case, they sell wings, fries, and fried veggies. The wings are not ideal due to the fat in them, but all good when heated to 180. I advertise on the back of the Excursion in exchange for free oil. Any Excess oil I don't need (and final washout) goes in the existing collection container that they get paid for. I believe Japanese tempura cooking is prob the best.
Nice clean set up. I'm currently building a shed to house a wvo filtering system in. I think I will copy your setup 100%. Can you tell me where to get a pump like that? also, might you have a diagram of the plumbing/valves? Nice job. Looks very professional.
@cupholdersforcars- Thank you! The pump is from Northern tool (clearwater pump)- Sometime it's on sale. I do not have specific diagram or schematic of all the plumbing. I could send you a couple closer pics I have taken that might help. The3- filter housing/valves can be found on ebay. The cone on btm of tank from bossbuck.com- Not sure if that still sell it. Let me know if you have more questions.
@powerman6464 Thanks!! I got the top filters on ebay actually. They are about $12 ea. Search "drum filter" . I have actually stopped using them completely and have the same great results. Thanks! If there are no filters it should flow at a high rate. I had trouble in the cold months. Oil would gel in the filters & flow was very slow- had to pre-warm them . Yours may be clogging. With warm oil (90) it definitely pours out a decent rate (gal+ per min). You don't want to force it through the filters.
