No worries, you only missed a 10 minute guitar fest with Pearl Jam , and the awful Belly with Gepeto - I always used to fast forward the first bit anyway, then fast forward REM' s bit and you've got an unforgettable show !
@losingmyreligion6767 YEah, no shit, he's aged like a US president in office for the last 20 years.....still makes awesome music after all these years unlike so many other bands from the era.
no nirvana? wtf is that supposed to mean? green eyed monster methinks. fuck this show and the dickheads who decided to call it "no nirvana". bunch of petty cunts!
@Bayview05 (Not trying to start an argument) I witnessed the beginning of music industry's doom when payola established those abominations everywhere. We like it or not they were really strong by 1999, when any boy band, Korn, and Limp Bizkit could reach a million of sold CDs (or even more) during the "premier month" of their records.
This show was a compilation of all the Alternate Rock bands that had appeared on the Late Show except for the biggest band of that year Nirvana so its sort of a joke title..
@vipersb1 I saw Jane's Addiction when "Nothing's Shocking" was out and they rocked. That is a GREAT album. "Been Caught Stealing" isn't their best song but it's OK. I was disappointed in the album it came off of, whatever it was called.
Dinosaur Jr. is the highlight of this clip without a doubt. This is one of the best line ups that J. Mascis has put together.
I think the band that really blows on this clip is Sonic Youth. I've never thought they had any talent whatsoever.
Shame your missing the pearl jam at the begining, because it was a great verison of alive, with eddie jumping and spinning. and it wasnt 1992 it was alot earlier than that. i would say end of 1991, because i saw it when i was still living at home.
@kepners Yeah, The Late Show ran from 1989 to 1995, The "No Nirvana" special was broadcast in 1993, It was a collection of the grunge/american rock/alternate bands that had appeared over the years compiled into one show, I have another video of it somewhere that a friend gave me years ago and it has all the bands, I think i came home late from the pub and had missed the first bit :) As far as I know Nirvana never appeared on the show.
I wish it was 1993 right now. I wanna wake up tomorrow and be in 1993 and not be 10 years old like I was the last time. I wanna live with this music, not just visit it in retrospect.... I miss music
Are you kidding? Sonic Youth and Nirvana were the two best (non-underground) bands of the late 80s and early 90s. Thurston Moore has done things with his guitar you (and I) can't even begin to comprehend. And then there's the fact that every band playing in this show were/are huge Sonic Youth fans.
@jadedandwhirred You got that right sir. I said it before and I'll gladly say it again, SMASHING PUMPKINS!!! Greatest band ever! And awesome video, love seeing these performences in one video.
Why is this show called No Nirvana? Here's the complex version of the answer: THEY'RE NOT ON IT!!! At the time the BBC wanted to give airtime to the bands from the US overshadowed by the Nirvana phenomenon etc....Or maybe they were peeved at Kurt for his anarchic behaviour on Top Of The Pops?? PS Pearl Jam sucked on this I recall. Cock rock.
I can`t believe how much Perry Farrell looks like Ray Davies from the Kinks, they could be freakin` twins. And the thing is they write the same kind of strange off beat songs.
Really good to see this again. I remember watching it when I was 15 (just falling out of love with Nirvana) and wanting to see some of the bands (esp. Dinosaur Jnr and Sonic Youth) who had been doing this for ages.
thanks for the upload. god i remember watching this when it was on BBC2 in the early 90s and even recording it on VHS myself but threw my tapes out years ago! :( shame the pearl jam bits missing but its better than nothing. this was probably only watched by about 100 grunge obsessed UK teens (like myself at the time) but was my first peek at what was happening in America. Most of these bands went onto major sucesss! Another great BBC music show!
I see it as a joke. It's a compilation of all the other alternative rock/grunge bands around at that time except for the band that was at the forefront of the whole scene - Nirvana ;) I might be wrong, though :P
@SovietSeattle Dude this IS a telecaster... But you know that craccitijones is talkin about J MASCIS not the guitarrist of Jane Addiction, don't you? Because the guitarrist of Jane Addiction is using a 'telescaster', but it isnt a telecaster, just the body is xD
Or should i sit about with my cock in my hand, Cranking because i cant except Perry Farrel vocal performance on a live track sucked dick, you stupid seppo bastard. Kernow Bys Viken you thick twat
I remember this show really well, and must have watched it about 50 times on an old burnt out VHS... so I can tell you that, in theory, it was because Nirvana were so dominant at the time, and The Late Show was trying to showcase other US alternative acts that were less well known in the UK... but perhaps it was also because Nirvana had never performed on the show!
i just love the sound of his voice,i know its funny but i feel kinda sad when listening to this song, but i enjoy the feeling ,great song, great solo's also.
