I'm debating between this lens and the Canon 28 f/1.8. I've used this lens before, and the focus ring was really stiff. Was I using a bad copy? Or are all the sigma lenses pretty stiff? How is your focus ring? I've even tried other focal lengths from Sigma, and it seems like they're style is a little stiff. I do more film than photography, so smooth focus is a necessity.
@jocamp5 This lens is much brighter than the 35 f/2 from Canon. But if you plan to move to full frame in the future, the 35 f/2 is an EF lens whereas the sigma is for cropped.
Thanks for reply. I just ordered the Sigma via Amazon ;-) ... Not planning to upgrade to Full Frame anytime soon, but good point!
I think this glass will provide good pictures on my t2i. I mostly take indoor shoots without flash and the overall quality plus price is really a nice combo.
so you prefer the canon ef mount... ?? so you put a DC designed lens on a adapter to use with a full frame camera? since you can afford L glass why not buying the canon 35mm f1.4L?
@Teuton1978 I'm not sure if you can put a cropped lens on a FF via a filter but regardless my L lenses are performing great. At that point, I couldn't afford an L lens and I realized that the 35mm focal length isn't wide enough for what I shoot. Also, the 35L is $1000 more than that Sigma. I did end up selling this lens and replaced it with the 24-70L.
Maybe i am getting something wrong here but you said you prefer the canon ef mount, which is full frame camera mount, roughly 8 seconds into your video.
The lens you are reviewing is developed for APS-C sensor cameras 30mm, EF-S on a canon. Put on a full frame camera it's more like 48mm.
@Teuton1978 ohhhh ok now I understand what you're saying. The current mount on the latest Canon DSLR camera/lenses is called the EF mount. The lens being reviewed also has a Canon EF mount but it is designed for cropped framed bodies therefore this lens is an EF-S lens. The difference between EF and EF-S lenses is the camera bodies that the lens can be used on. An EF-S lens can only be mounted on cropped framed bodies where as an EF lens can be mounted on both cropped and full framed bodies.
@watduzhkstand4 The current mount for Canon APS-C EOS 7D EOS 20D EOS 20Da EOS 30D EOS 40D EOS 50D EOS 60D EOS 300D/Digital Rebel EOS 350D/Digital Rebel XT EOS 400D/Digital Rebel XTi EOS 450D/Rebel XSi EOS 500D/Rebel T1i EOS 550D/Rebel T2i EOS 600D/Rebel T3i EOS 1000D/Rebel XS EOS 1100D/Rebel T3 Is called EF-S mount. the current mount for canon FF cameras 5D Mark II 5D 1Ds Mk III 1Ds Mk II 1Ds is called EF mount.
@Teuton1978 I think you're getting confused. EF and EF-S is differentiated by the lens and not the body. All current Canon bodies have the SAME mount, IDENTICAL, and they're all EF mounts. The lenses can differentiate between EF and EF-S. Thanks
@watduzhkstand4 Alright then, get a ff canon mount an ef-s lens on it and tell me how much they charge you to replace the mirror on the ff, because it hit the end of the ef-s lens. EF and EF-S are different. If you say EF mount, as you did, you are referring to full frame, if you say ef-s you are talking crop sensor. Even if you use the sigma on a ff you get vignetting so useless on a ff. You are welcome.
@Teuton1978 I mentioned that before saying that EF-S lenses can only be mounted on cropped framed bodies. This is what you do. Go to B&H and find any cropped body camera body, 60D, 7D, any rebel, I don't care. Then go under specification and you'll see that it says EF mount.
@LifeWithAnAngel hahahaha yea sorry. As much as I love the lens, the image quality was a bit softer than what I want. I ended up selling this lens to fund my 24-70
is this good for video recording? type my video in youtube. d-bo you dont hear me. will it be simular to that quality?

@nishyman Then go for the Samyang/Walimex 35 1.4, it's even better than
the 35 1.4 L ;)

Thank you so much for the review. I'm between this one and the Canon 35mm, prime too at f/2 I think. Which one do you recommend?

@jocamp5 Why do you say "upgrade" and not "change" ? :) Switching to a full frame camera does not mean you upgrade ;).

EF mount for canon is Full Frame ->

How good is it for filming because thers no is?
Smalskin 8 months ago
@Smalskin I don't want to give false advice since I don't shoot videos much but the sigma does have a really shallow DOF when making videos.
watduzhkstand4 8 months ago
@Smalskin I thought IS bad for filming? what you need is a steadicam?
