Norwegian Red cross is good or so I have found on my farm. The best results I have are crossing Holstein with Fleckvieh and then cross that with Norwegian red. Then back to Holstein. Am much happier with the fleckvieh though in terms of overall economics and temperment and am starting to breed some up to full bloods.
Is Phil a calving ease sire? hmm I would have gone a 3 way cross with something else, maybe a Jersey rather than backcrossing- you lose the hybrid vigour!
Holsteincowboy isn't alone in breeding at 15 mos, went to the Purdue University (USA) Dairy Club sale 4/26/08 & bred heifers were due to have calves the same month as their 2nd birthday or shortly thereafter. We have a Holstein heifer that should have been AI'd sooner as we can't get her to settle, she's 3 1/2 yrs now, & have since learned that the Inquirer breeding is lower fertility.

It will be a heifer calf so hopefully will calf easily. I breed all heifers to sexed semen. I might try breeding some of the reds to jersey.
btw I envy you dairying in AU. Nice weather, no red tape/regulations, No long winters, better life style, high milk prices :)

i think its sad that they get inseminated when theyre only about 1 year old
marritdepp 4 years ago
Most are AI'd at 15 month so they calve at 2 years old. I AI them with sexed semen which gives a easy calving female calf
holsteincowboy 4 years ago
yes and theyre not even grown up at that age
then means i should be pregnant too if i was a cow
