  • lol nice stump u got there id buy it

  • @Midnighter169 the stump is eucalyptus. i got it from a friend.

  • @kalevraa wow eucalyptus thats awesome

  • @Midnighter169 well, eucalyptus is a hard wood, and smells nice, but any decent stump would do -- oak, elm, etc. even douglas fir is ok.

  • @kalevraa

What is the stump used for?

I mean: is there any difference in using it, as opposed to an anvil?

  • @Hyshinara yes, using the stump is different from using an anvil -- you can straighten hot steel on a stump without leaving any marks. please note that i also use a rawhide mallet, rather than a steel hammer to hit the hot piece with. often, after you make an intricate piece, it's better to correct any distortion that way, as you don't want to leave any unnecessary marks. this is particularly true for any kind of twisted pieces. thanks for asking!

  • @kalevraa

    Oh, makes sense! :D

I'm getting more and more interested in forging, casting, etc. :)

  • @Hyshinara yes, metalwork is a lot of fun.

  • i smith to :3 just not with machines ^^' but making a few knifes and fire steel :3

  • there are blacksmiths because it's an effing great thing to be doing, and because we can make some really cool shit no one else can, and because there are enough people who pay top dollar to have it in their houses. don't have an interest in guns, myself. maybe my years in the infantry knocked it out of me. there IS such a thing as too much shooting...

  • Why are there still blacksmiths.... There should be more gunsmiths....

  • @Southpark124 There are still blacksmiths because as kalevraa said it's cool and people pay for what you can make. Where as machines make better guns than you can make by hand so there isn't much demand for it, except as a small number of people doing modifications and customization of weapons. Or an even smaller group of people that still make black powder weapons by hand.

  • @Southpark124

Gunsmiths make guns and that's it, blacksmiths make anything that can be hand forged including gun parts..

  • What does the finished diamond twist look like?

Did you do anymore in this series?

  • Oh man. Id hate to fight this dude.

Fucking Blacksmiths got hands from hell haha.

  • @ElDuderino909 errr... thanks, i guess...

  • @ElDuderino909 thanks for the new sterotype,hahaha

  • @ElDuderino909Them hands from hell wouldn't be shit if they got in between that hammer.Just sayin he he.

  • DId you say you were in portland, OR?

  • @Thekittycatateme yep. hot day today, ain't it?

  • @kalevraa at least it isn't as hot as last year

  • Ok, hang on, we can't have it both ways here... either it's dangerous and therefore valorous, or it's not dangerous and therefore nothing to be concerned about.

  • @nbeckster1 well, it's riding a motorbike, or picking your nose. if you don't know what you are doing, you will end up with your brains in your helmet, or your finger in your sinus. if you are used to it, and know what to be mindful of, you are pretty safe, and can enjoy yourself. as to valorous -- not my area of expertise. unless you count arguing with my sainted grandmother...anyhow, forging hot steel is pretty exciting, even after 24 years of it.

  • @kalevraa portland!!! :D

  • @Skeeeder err... yes, that's where i live. i like the city a lot, but didn't realize that it warranted the excitement of 3 exclamation points, though...

  • @kalevraa its just that i live in Portland also, thats why i did that. :D

  • @Skeeeder ahh...had a good, rainy weekend? i did...

  • That looks so dangerous....

  • not really. you just have to know what you are doing, and be mindful. granted, if you don't concentrate you can get a facefull of hot steel. but i find that this very possibility focuses the mind wonderfully.

  • @kalevraa like shooting a gun

  • @kalevraa I once read a quote from a fellow blade-maker when asked why he does it, his reply made me wince a bit, but I agree with him, "It's the excitement of knowing that a single lapse in concentration could have a 10 inch piece of hardened, sharpened steel flying at me at over 100 MPH that keeps my mind sharp."

  • @bearsbugs right. kinda like bungee cord jumping. but instead of ending up with pants full of shit, one ends up with a (hopefully) beautiful and useful object, and maybe even there is enough money left over to buy a new pair of pants...

  • @nbeckster1 if man kind did not tempt the dangerous we would still be in the stone age.

  • @saxonhaste No we wouldn't, knapping flint is dangerous too. We would be just like the monkeys, eating what we can find, at the mercy of any predator we couldn't outrun or out climb.

  • nice one thx for sharing

  • you are vert welcome. thanks for watching.

  • tHAT AX THING LOOKED AWKWARD WHY DONT YOU JUST USE A REGULAR AX OR SOMETHING ONE PIECE YOU DONT HAVE TO HOLD TOGATHER

  • antioxidity, the "ax thing" is a hot cutter. i like the tong-held design as you just take the blade out as it gets hot, throw it in a bucket of water, and put a replacement one in, and just keep cycling them like that with no time lost for cooling. also, it is easier to re-sharpen them, and you can have a boxful of the cutters and only one pair of tongs, which saves a lot of space, and the effort of making and welding a handle to each and every one of them. They are easy to use.

  • Meh....I can do that with my bare hands and a cigarette lighter.

  • @Lengsel7 i would love to see that. lol

  • Awesome!!!

  • thank you. i enjoy forging very much, and am very happy that others seems to find it interesting, too.

  • very nice now I knew how to do it.

  • many thanks, i am glad you find this helpful.
