  • all that machinery just to play the same note millions of time lol

  • That is one big bell.

  • That's brilliant Guy Fox thanks ever so much for fixing this as he loves Big Ben but can't visit it for few years with all those steps! This is a great video - thank you.

  • Dear beeclandon, Thanks for your comment. We've adjusted the settings so please try it again.

  • Hi my 2 year old son loves watching this but it does not work on iPads or iPhone it just says 'content owner has not made this video available on mobiles''. can you fix this?

  • Wow I always thought Big Ben was the name of the clock tower, I didnt know it was the name of the bell. I dont know what to believe anymore...

  • Very nice video! I recommend it for anyone that wants to know more about Big Ben. I learned A LOT from this!

  • We need the prison room back

  • There is a lot of writing on the tower. I so far only saw " Domint Salvam Fac Reginam Nostrum Victorian Primam", and I see there is some writing on Big Ben itself. What does it all mean?

  • Why isn't Big Ben gonged from the inside like most other bells? Does being struck in the same place that many times for that long change his tune?

  • So are all of the sounds made from hitting the same bell, or is Ben the one that counts the time?

  • @bg1379 Big Ben is one of five bells in the belfry. The melody is played on four bells, and then the hour chime is Big Ben.

  • I think its very stupid that the fact is when the girl arrives at the clocktower in the taxi, notice the clock face shows 2.40, yet when she is in the clock tower listening to big ben chimes, it chimes 12 times, not possible!!!!!

  • Well spotted! You certainly have a key eye for detail. When we filmed, the Palace of Westminster allowed us access to the Tower for a limited time in the morning, so we had to shoot our video out of sequence. We shot that scene and a few other outdoor scenes in the afternoon.

  • @GuyFoxTV that explains it then

  • I only say "wow"

  • 4:12 All 13.5 tons of "her" actually. Bells are always female

  • Is this open to the public? I thought there was more to the gears and mechanism than that.

  • @JetHawk If you're a UK resident and over 11, yes. Says so on Parliament's website how to get up there.

  • Is this a children`s tv programme ? if so it is very well presented.

  • ooooooool1l1

  • i thougt big ben was the entire tower

  • @Buttify100

Most people refer to the whole tower as Big Ben, but it is only the bell's name.

  • Great video! Wonderful for children to see.

    Well done.

  • a very nice video on the world's most fascinating clock ;)

  • I love hearing the big ben on tv at 12am in the new year.:D

  • very nice video ;)

  • WHAT IS THE POINT OF THIS?

  • @thekylejohn1 Thanks for asking. This video was part of our 'Happy Birthday, Big Ben' project in 2009. The idea was to make a video to allow people, who might not be able to access the stairs, to see what happens inside the clock tower.

  • why not put in elivators?

  • Is Big Ben really loud in the belfry?

  • @pennyf9

  • @GuyFoxTV im sure i saw a movie years ago about people trapped in big ben. i think it was a horror movie.

but good video about the clock you made.

  • Respond to this video... Yes. When you stand next to the bell while it chimes, you can feel everything around you shake. You have to wear ear protectors -- the decibel level is similar to that of a jet engine.

  • @GuyFoxTV WOW! That must be loud!

  • @GuyFoxTV ouch. i'm pretty sure without ear protection, you'll go deaf

  • Very nice video!

  • How the chimes works when it's the time to chime? they don't even have timers

  • @TheKeith1814 The chimes are connected by cables to the chiming train of the clock (which is in a room directly beneath the belfry).

  • The quarter bells sound just like the clock in Back to the Future!

  • That's because sound effects from Big Ben were used in the movie for the clock tower. The clock in the movie doesn't chime... it's just a sound effect added in.

  • What does the escapement do?

  • The escapement regulates the speed of the going train. It makes sure the energy, which is created by the swing of the pendulum, "escapes" to the going train in a steady fashion. Without the escapement, the going train would spin out of control.

  • Nice coverage of a landmark not easily accessible to the general public (especially non-UK residents). Have you thought about presenting other London landmarks such as the dome in St Paul's Cathedral or the tombs in Westminster Abbey?
