Why the FUCK can't people pronounce the fucking surname McGrath!!!???? It's pronounced McGra.............check out the video of Paul McGrath tribute and you'll understand then!!!
@hill1916 ,any need for the obscene language, you are complaining about a mis pronunciation with foul language,do you not see the irony in this,is this the type of language you use in everyday life or do you just use it on youtube to embarass the rest of us irish men,why do all you ira types use such language in such a casual manner,if you were a real 1916 patriot, why dont you represent with dignity when you feel the need to comment,i despair of you people who only offend for the sake of it.
@NormanGlory Not once did i mention IRA in my comments......go and get some help for yourself as you clearly need some. I was only commenting on the mispronounciation of my surname - McGrath.
pacifism isn't an ideal I admire. some comments indicate nothing is worth fighting or dying for. Is your freedom worth fighting for? is your life worth fighting for? there are aggressors and there is the perception of aggression- the analysis must be honest and intense- and if one is truly threatened for no fault of their own, then it is not war that must be justified, but the refusal to defend oneself. Europe did nothing to provoke Nazi Germany, and their wars against it were ":good" wars
@mmw19761 ,and by that reckoning, can you point to another "just war" since ww2,and are you a fighting man yourself or a watcher.curiosity on my part..........not animosity.
The son of a fighter, and a student of history. While the motivations of the allies might have been less than altruistic, freeing Kuwait was the right thing to do. Israel defending itself is justified. taking out the Taliban was necessary, but not well thought out. were the wars aimed at containing communism "good?" they thought so at the time- and in hindsight, probably unnecessary- but something had to be done to keep USSR in check.
@mmw19761 ,respect to you and your father,i was interested in your point of view, you left a good comment previously,it wasnt the usual kill em all crap you read in the comments, iraq was a dissaster, why?A million dead and we never got the oil, french and russian companies getting the rights to some of the fields, disgracefull, communism, along with all other internationalism is to be detested and confronted,Israel has fought the only just wars since ww2 IMO,up to 1982 anyway, downhill a bit since.
The American flags distorys the song. Its about a Irishman who lost his legs in the British service for Christs sake nothing to do with America at all,
YEAH LETS SEE WHEN THEY GAVE UP THE PEOPLE ON THE STREET THREW FRUIT AT THEM, THE ONLY BRITISH SOLDIERS THAT THEY KILLED WERE IRISH MEN WHO WERE ON LEAVE FROM FIGHTING IN FRANCE,, ALSO RERMEMBER THAT THOSE SOLDIERS THAT DIED VOLUNTEERED TO FIGHT IN FRANCE BECAUSE THEY ALSO FELT LIKE THEY THE 1916 BUNCH THAT THEY WERE DOING THE RIGHT THING SO WHO IS RIGHT? answers on a postcard to .... .... :)
the song is an old irish one. that said, the message of Mrs. McGrath is universal: mothers' and their sons pay for the murdering ambitions of old men.
Dropkick Murphy's, I know the song, 'The green fields of france' is also from them, one of my favorites... But Bruce just has the perfect voice for this kind of songs, he makes them magical.
Are you all drunk or blind? Pay attention to the song, and the video. And pray for these poor men and women in harm's way, and people who mourn those who won't be coming back. Jesus...don't be so ...so shallow!
Mrs. McGrath is related to a song called "They're Rolling Out the Drums Again, Haroo, Haroo" which is where we got the tune for "When Johnny Comes Marching Home." This is a new tune to me, I'm used to the one that Tommy Makem used (in a major key).
Yeah, ya know a lot of people get all weepy and sorry for soldiers. Don't. What they are doing for this country has transcended mere tears. Hug em. Talk to em. Laugh with em. But whatever you do, don't cry for the men and women who protect this country. That's just downright god damn demeaning. Like they're children. Cry for children, not soldiers.
I hear argument all the time go get those weapons of mass destruction go die for ideals and the flag and salesmen sell those lies Im a sales man and you gotta package it just right and wrap it up in a red white & blue flag.... and sell it as patriotism ... buyer beware buyer beware
this vid is painfull to watch... makes me fell sad to see all the tears and pain. i wich all luck to the soldiers and parents. R.I.P all lost soldiers.
take heed from this song for its an irish song and we know about fighting wars and the cost of them: a grave, a flag, a medal and a mother that will never see her son again in this life. so you think about that next time you invade another counrty cos it may your mothers' heart that gets broken next time.
brings tears to my eyes every time... i lost two of my best friends in this war, and im ashamed of myself for not fighting with them. i lost friends... i couldnt imagine what it would be like to lose a child. my heart goes out to every parent who has lost a child in the service of our country.
I just met a vet the other day my age (26) missing a leg and scarred up, bless him, this song just made me go to peices. He was so happy that my little son wasnt afraid of him, cant imagine being like that the rest of his life, breaks my heart.
died while honouring America in a just war (also the bit with Bush in the hospital). I didn't mean to offend anyone but just pointing out that this video uses an anti war song while, in my interpretation, not coming across as anti war itself
Hi Michael, please do not worry about being offensive. In my opinion the song & the video represent a very strong anti-war message. However if you disagree it is good to share your view. We must all remember that anti-war is peace. That is to include peaceful You Tube comments. To that affect I believe you have been given overly harsh critisicm!
Good song but excuse me if I don't cry my eyes out at the video footage. Of course it's a shame when soldiers die in battle but to a certain extent that comes with the territory. What about all the innocent Iraqi's killed?
Michaelfrances you are to stupid too reason with...if you run your mouth like that in the wrong place some one will break your jaw to shut you up! Your attitude that it doesn't matter if they get killed because its their job is bullshit! You are a useless selfish prick!
Listen jazzy jeff you little wank, which part of my statement was so outlandish? That innocent victims of war are more innocent the soldiers of the country who instigated the war for their own selfish ends? To anyone with half a braincell that is a perfectly 'reasonable' stance. When you sign up for the army you must be prepared to die for your country. Not that it doesn't matter, just that in my opinion it was Bush and co who killed these soldiers and the many forgotten Iraqis. Now fuckoff

Way to back pedal pussy. This was put up as a memorial to soldiers, some of the people looking at it lost friends and family over there. your comment "excuse me if i don't cry my eyes out" and "to a certain extent it comes with the territory" was completly rude. Those soldiers have wives and kids...but you are to stupid to know when to shut up....you have no respect for other people. you are about the lowest type of person I know. I think you are to much of a coward to serve in the army.
I'm not going to kowtow to your sentimental line. I was merely making the very reasonable point that this song - 'all foreign wars I do proclaim live on the blood and the mothers pain I'd rather have my son as he used to be than the King of America and his whole navy'- is not a paean to killed soldiers but an anti-war song. Of course it's tragic when people die but the main issue is that the war itself was wrong and the star spangled banner intro to this video suggests that these soldiers...
Great song, only heard this version of it a week ago, learned the origional in school back in the 60's sounded nothing like this, but there was somthing fimilar about the air! youtube search the theme to "The Last of the Moheekans"
I find this a good representation of and similar to our current situation. Compare the words of this song to a song or letter of a son in or was in Iraq. Many people could relate to this song and have strong feelings to it. Don't disregard this video interpretation as a warmongering tribute to greed or anything of that sort.
i love this song, it is my favourite from the seeger sessions, but to be honest im not a fan of the vidio purely because i always imagin the song being played to a vid of a fleet of ships that sail using the wind and old fassioned cannons and bording ships with hand to hand combat with sords and things..
and if you wanted a vidio about how devistating modern wars have been i would have used a more modern song about war
Love this song! Want to hear more from Bruce Springsteen?! - Ofcourse!! - Simply go to my YouTube account and go in playlist. I have a whole Bruce Springsteen playlist there ;) Have fun and Thanks! :D
my god, this video literally gave me chills. this is a beautiful adaptation for this song. I am no fan of the current war america is fighting but to think about the soldiers from a mother's perspective is a very powerful statement. it brought tears to my eyes and I have been determined to be nothing but cold and detached from this war since 2001. you did an excellent job of modernizing an old Irish song.
From a person living in Denmark (we have troops in Afghanistan and had in Iraq): True you do not have a draft, but for most people on the lowest steps of society the military is the only way to get an education and to support your family. Education is not free for all In the US as it is here in my beautiful, beautiful Denmark. That is not very "land of opportunities"-like. In fact it is more likely to go from rags to riches in my "leftist" country than in yours. Kind regards..
This is an adaptaption of the old irish anti-war song Mrs. McGrath. If you watch the version of this as presented by the Dubliners you be hearing the original adaptation of the song.
The 'theme' however pisses me off, why the hell do we need to fight all the damn time, its a waste of money, time and lifes...
When 'great leaders' wish to fight, they should be the ones doing the fighting, not soldiers - not innocents...God Dammit! Throw them in a freaking pit and let them fight with their bare hands, and name the one to survive the winner...
I've considered supporting that option myself. The only problem is that then good physical fighters get chosen for leadership rather than the intelligent people. Not that our current leader is that intelligent, but still.
god bless america from your real friends across the pond,us irish will never let you stand alone in your time of need,we wept as a nation for you,in life you have to stand up and be counted for what you believe in,war never solves anything us irish know that as we have been at war with the english for 800 years, may some kinda of peace reach your distant shores, may god be good to you all,and may you find what was lost b4 9/11...
not surprised you like the americans it was them that funded the provisional IRA because of the large irish american immigrants. its the UK that are allies with America and america is a former british colony, so northen ireland is happy to be part of a united kingdom
bollocks you mug what a dick you are, thats the attitude that keeps us hating you, keep it up you bag of shite, fucking english your all mongrels, your german bitch queen is the biggest mongrel of all heinz 57 variety. you will never beat the irish and you know it.your a wanker with all your english half breeds and clingon royalty.. UP THE I.R.A....
holytroz im clueless did i imply your a loyalist, all said glad your not a loyalist, well let me know if i put your back up,as me da used to say god bless you if your a catholic if not never mind, good health 2u.
Humans have been fighting in wars for over over a thousand years it'sa pity that this one has no real meaning to it and so many lives have been lost becuase humans can't resolve our own problems becuase humans are the greediest things on earth..you may reject this idea but it is true..
Mrs. McGrath is about the British Drafting the Irish into they're war with America. But back then talking about the war in a non supportive was was treason, so they had to do it in song.
Never! Bruce is right....he always is! I wish all Americans would have listened to him in 2004 when he fought for democracy....WHY DIDN'T YOU????????????????
We DID listen to him you bigot, it was the major political idiots who didn't. Besides, I love Bruce but if he is so great then he would have targeted the admins. not the people. But then, he IS a music artist... :(
Anger begets hatred, hatred begets war, war is the path to the dark side! Let us all honor our dead by being open with our minds in line with the freedom that our forbears stood to liberate & defend so valiantly. But let us also remember to be reasonable & reserved too!
the song is irish. it was written by an irish man that lived in boston and fought in the civil war. he was devested to find he was fighting southerners that were also irish. he wrote several letters to boston papers that were also published. he died a disallusioned lonely drunk. war eh!!!
I remember being six years old, my father would spend weekends with us because he worked crazy hours during the week. And he would sit with me on his lap and just... cry. We listened to Irish music for hours. We had this song on vinyl from decades ago. It was the first song I ever memorized.
I absoulutly love this song and this video. It really makes you think about the war that is going on over in Iraq and all of the mothers that want their sons back. . .Bruce really makes this song beautiful. Him and the rest of the band. Thanks for uploading this<3
I think I prefer the original version of the song <.<

my god, this video literally gave me chills. this is a beautiful adaptation for this song. I am no fan of the current war america is fighting but to think about the soldiers from a mother's perspective is a very powerful statement. it brought tears to my eyes and I have been determined to be nothing but cold and detached from this war since 2001. you did an excellent job of modernizing an old Irish song.

in terms of power and message this video is among the highest rated on youtube.

Alright, I'm just going to throw this out there.
I don't think war is positive, I'm not going to try to say it is.
War is terrible, and shouldn't exist.
I agree with Darkost that the politicians should fight...
But god dammit, don't post these anti-war statements using how terrible the soldiers of war look.
I know I'll catch a lot of flak for this, but it's their own damn fault for signing up for the war anyways.
We don't have a damn draft, they weren't forced into service.
sjktheband 4 years ago
Flak? You're lucky if that's all you catch.
pvtvice 3 years ago 4
From a person living in Denmark (we have troops in Afghanistan and had in Iraq): True you do not have a draft, but for most people on the lowest steps of society the military is the only way to get an education and to support your family. Education is not free for all In the US as it is here in my beautiful, beautiful Denmark. That is not very "land of opportunities"-like. In fact it is more likely to go from rags to riches in my "leftist" country than in yours. Kind regards..

as a mc grath and a brit squaddie form the republic of ireland the uniform they talk of is the old royal marines uniform in the song

This is an adaptaption of the old irish anti-war song Mrs. McGrath. If you watch the version of this as presented by the Dubliners you be hearing the original adaptation of the song.

Great song, fits the vid perfectly...
Darkost 4 years ago 3
I've considered supporting that option myself. The only problem is that then good physical fighters get chosen for leadership rather than the intelligent people. Not that our current leader is that intelligent, but still.

You don't take a country like the USA into a war!
Never! Bruce is right....he always is! I wish all Americans would have listened to him in 2004 when he fought for democracy....WHY DIDN'T YOU????????????????
robr1973 4 years ago 3
We DID listen to him you bigot, it was the major political idiots who didn't. Besides, I love Bruce but if he is so great then he would have targeted the admins. not the people. But then, he IS a music artist... :(

The song condemns war, not the McGraths who fight them.

Anger begets hatred, hatred begets war, war is the path to the dark side! Let us all honor our dead by being open with our minds in line with the freedom that our forbears stood to liberate & defend so valiantly. But let us also remember to be reasonable & reserved too!

The Americans didn't have Scarlet Coats, the Brits did. Have you never heard of a red coat before?
iainbell82 4 years ago
Its about an Irishman fighting for the English. Hence the Scarlet coat. Its nothing to do with the American Civil War
iainbell82 4 years ago
Sorry mate, but it is about an Irishman fighting for the Americans not the brits.

I remember being six years old, my father would spend weekends with us because he worked crazy hours during the week. And he would sit with me on his lap and just... cry. We listened to Irish music for hours. We had this song on vinyl from decades ago. It was the first song I ever memorized.
