Thank you so much for sharing this. I haven't seen this in years! Now if some one would only upload "The Passion Of Dracula" which was taped for "Broadway on Showtime" back in 1980 or 1981. Passion of Dracula was the Off Broadway rival to the 1977 Frank Langella. Broadway revival.
Thanks INFINITELY for posting this - I'd recorded this when it showed first on HBO, but the tape got lost via loaning to someone, and I'd been occasionally hunting for this for the past thirty years.... Thank you!
I wish someone had videotaped a performance of this play I saw live in the 70s in Chicago. Leonard Nimoy as Holmes, and Laugh-In's Alan Suess as Moriarty. Thanks for posting this, @herosharris!
There was an earlier broadcast on HBO which was the Gillette script. This later broadcast included a summary of the first several minutes as we see here. The Langella production was originally broadcast in 1980 (give or take a year), and this rebroadcast with the edited beginning was around 1984. I have the earlier production on audio tape, and this one, like you, on VHS. lol
@CubanLightningEnt if the beginning was what was edited, I would like to hear that. IF it could be combined with stills, it would make an excellent prologue.
Brilliant production. @entertherat you are correct; the narration by Watson was added for rebroadcast to bring the runtime under 2 hours. The original broadcast began with the Larrabees and Judson, and the arrival of Sid Prince at the house. It ran about 2 hours 15 minutes. Thanks for posting this!
Odd, I don't remember seeing the longlong-winded exposition from Watson at the start -- there was a fair bit between Sid and the Larabees before the girl's brought down. Was this edited version also shown on HBO?
@entertherat I don't ever remember seeing any other version that this one ever shown on either HBO or Showtime. I know the script of this thing off by heart and have never seen any other.

I wish it had at least English subtitles, I don't catch too much from the speech :(
Anyway, thank you for uploading!

@entertherat We don't remember because Watson was not as ponderous, and clumsy.

Thank you for adding this. I remember watching this on HBO being a big fan of Sherlock Holmes and Frank Langella. How did you find it?

@65mariaMAM I've had this on tape since it's original showing on HBO.
