They only had Elsa in the first place cos Adamson shot her mother. Elsa's siblings ended up in a zoo in Rotterdam and Elsa herself only made it to 5 years, apparently dying after a tick bit her. We could surmise -this is only a hypothesis- that had Adams not shot the mother, Elsa would have ingested more mother's milk for one thing and perhaps consolidated her immune system in the wild and subsequently NOT have succombed to a tick bite.
@suddenlyitsobvious Being killed by a tick born disease can happen to any wild animal. It has been noted that felines are more susceptible to it. And people do change believe it or not. George may have shot Elsa's mother, but it was his job. He was a Game Warden and Elsa's mother was charging him and another warden when he shot her. What should be looked at is all the lions that he saved and returned to the wild that otherwise would not have survived and if they had, it would have been in a zoo.
@crystalwolf2006 It was not his job to kill lions as game warden. He shot the lioness as she was charging towards him = 'self defense'
Elsa's sisters did end up in a Zoo- however thereafter especially George worked on rehabilitating Lions into the wild- sth no one until then had even tried !!
@suddenlyitsobvious Elsa was the smallest and that was why they kept her (and probabally because she was the calmest.) Although George believes it might have been easier to free Elsa if she had her siblings. And you may be right about the whole idea of her immune system being stronger if her mother hadn't died, but that is many years ago and it has already happened.
What a lovely voice Bill Travers had, and I notice he never focused attention on himself, only on others, a true gentleman, Virginia McKenna is the same, she speaks quite naturally not expecting praise - always a lovely lady.
Whenever I see any of the videos to do with George and cristian i cry...every time. So beautiful how animals and humans can be if they choose so. Thanks for this video.
This movie is about what happened to MARA the lion ..another of Georges lions! I need to find this

On 20 August 1989, the 83-year-old Adamson was shot to death at Kora Reserve by Somali bandits when he went to the aid of a tourist.
