Actually, this is very fascinating... I have never actually seen video in clear water, under water, of a dog swimming. It's more like they're kicking. Very interesting. Thanks!  Oh, and BTW... who in the world would dislike this video? Oh, wait, probably PETA ....

@anubethc45 Why would you hate to bring that up? You are totally right about shelter dogs and retraining them Yet, I don´t think Obama refused to get a shelter dog because of what you say though. I volunteered for a few years to train shelter dogs to get used to people and loose their fears so that they could be good pets, so I completely understand what you are saying. Cheers!

maybe it's tough to find a shelter dog who is hypoallergenic. even if he wasn't able to get a dog from a shelter it's good he mentioned it because anything he says is gold these days and there will be a lot of people getting pets from shelters just because of the awareness he brought to the subject. this dog is lovely by the way. and yup, many breeders are greedy bastards. always 2 sides

The dog was given to them by Kennedy who got it from a breeder. The dog was given back to the breeder because the previous owner an old lady had problems getting the puppy to adjust to the other dogs in her home.

i have a beige poodle and shes pretty clean, she goes swimming too but needs a little coaxing. when other people are in and she's out she also barks uncontrollably at them. btw, ur pool looks just like mine, hope u picked the shockcrete.

We adopted a puppy (a rescue) at 8 weeks of age (now 4 1/2 months). I thought for sure he was a mutt, but two neighbors asked me if he was a PWD. I'd never heard of them before! I've looked online and am astounded at the resemblance (wavy haired.) Plus, he LOVES the water and exhibits other tendencies described about PWD's. I've got to get this dog a pool! If he sees a PUDDLE, he has to splash in it. Your dog is beauty in motion. Lovely to see.

Yes-very much so. They are very large paws and very webbed (like flippers!). BTW, we got a baby pool about a week ago. He loved it! Splash, fetch, hop-wahoo! I'm tying to find a deeper pool for him to swim. One bright dog but FULL of energy. I've got to walk him 2 x's a day (45 min each) to keep him balanced. Even then, I think he could use some swimming about 2-3 times a week. His training is coming along well--stay, down, 'let's go,' drop. He learns fast, but I have to be VERY consistent.

One more thing, schatzi. I'm looking at this vid again, and I can't believe how much our Kodi looks like this dog. Same fanned tail, length of body/leg ratio, shape of ears and nose, hair length, black with white patch on chest. I'm going to look into DNA testing, but I'm not sure if PWD is on the DNA match list.

Schatzi, do you know if PWD's can run like the wind--like a border collie--down low, fast turns, etc? Kodi runs like this.

OMG! my porty is too. i pick her up and walk her into 4 feet of water and i drop her in. that is the only way, then she will swim right to shore. if im swimming she will wine and squeek. she is almost a year.

about ten years ago i had two Portuguese Water Dogs...they were brother,named Sandy and Bobby.....they died when they were young....i loved them :S...by the way,i'm portuguese,those dogs are natural from my Country hehe

Well, I think it's a matter of options! Here there is no ocean and the lake water is very murky...

Try to jump in the pool with your dogs or throw a toy in the water...
