Heared that sound, one year ago, at holidays in Costa Rica... It's even more terrifying when it's night/dark.. At the hotel we could hear them 'hauling' (don't know if that's typed right :-), English is not my first language ;-). But truely, it sounds weird..

i just got back from costa rica and these things are way scary at first. we heard them screaming at us on an ATV tour.  i was scared when i heard them roaring louder than my 4 wheeler.

I just got back from Costa Rica and the first time it scared the crap out of me. I should have put together that they are called "Howler" monkeys, but I always thought of the high pitch monkey screeches and oooohhhhhs. This was very different, and they are really cute when you see them.

At 3:30 in the morning, in a pitch black cottage on the Macal River in Belize, these sounds woke me from sleep. I do not think I've ever leaped to the ceiling faster in my life. It took me a minute or 2 to realize what the sound was. It certainly didn't sound like any monkey I had heard before. Very, very eerie and frightening! Pretty scary!

Awesome! I miss the sound of the howlers. I stayed in Belize years ago for archaeology. There's nothing like sleeping in a tent in the rainforest and listening to all the incredible creatures. I will never sleep that soundly again.

we were on the Belize close to the Guatamala border at a Myan site and 4 of these monkeys came up . They were high in the trees and eventually came up closer to us. I not only got great video but also audio. Ive never posted on You Tube, Ill try to figure it out!

Yes, indeedy, it is very, very wierd. I have seen, mostly heard, a lot, but glimpsed a few, in Tecal National Park, Guatamala. You'll be guaranteed to hear them, and maybe see them if you take the time, I spent two hours listening and looking straight up. Go to Antigua, Guatamala, .

When I went to Costa Rica I chased howler monkeys through the forest of the path and down this waterfall. I got lost and it was right at dusk lol. I finally got back because the hotel management had a small hut out there where one of the workers hiked back with me. Moral of the story, dont chase howler monkeys!
