I have progressive Multiple Sclerosis and I find this hilarious! She's great; I love her wit, her intelligence, her observations. People can feel however they'd like, but I believe there is sometimes a prevalent over-sensitivity in our society. She's not being cruel; she's being funny. I make jokes about my disease frequently; humor is necessary to stay alive.
As someone who has a degenerative disease, I find this video incredibly hurtful and offensive. Degenerative diseases are just that - degenerative, painful, debilitating and life-threatening. They are not minor aches and pains and they are not laughing matters. So please, dont tell me to lighten up. She is mocking the battles I, and others, have to face every day and dismissing them as an excuse to be lazy.
@ndebace I'm sorry about your illness. Really. I am. I just don't think Paula Poundstone meant to be offensive. I was born with a cleft pallatte. I don't take it personal when people make light of that.
@ndebace Growing up, I was close to someone who had lupus (and eventually died from it). He embraced life and laughed as hard and as often as possible. He was a priest, and it was not uncommon for him to crack jokes at his own expense when pastoring. I found that courageous and wonderful. If you can't laugh at yourself, what CAN you laugh at? Laughing through the pain is what life is all about. How many other bad things are there that people joke about to ease the completely real ache?
@yugidean1980 I am very sorry for the loss of your friend. And, for the record, I love a good joke. But I have a degenerative disease and so did your friend. Paula Poundstone does not. To laugh in the face of one’s own situation is one thing, but to say that you wish you had a disease that slowly kills you so that you have an excuse for being lazy shows a clear lack of understanding and caring. She flat out says “I don’t think I would be any more tired….” proofing her flat-out ignorance.
@yugidean1980 These “jokes” have serious ramifications. There is a serious lack of funding for the study and treatment of degenerative diseases and one of the main reasons is because they are seriously misunderstood and not treated with the same reverence as cancer, AIDS, etc. I laugh at many things in life, but I like intelligent humor. This joke is ignorant and only furthers stereotypes and a lack of understanding for terrible diseases.
@SchweetDude BTW, do you even know what you are laughing at? Do you know what degenerative diseases are? I posted my comments because I feel that this joke does a great disservice to an already misunderstood class of diseases. There are plenty of things to laugh at in the world. But a woman who wishes she had a disease that will slowly and painfully kill her so that she can have an excuse for being lazy is not one of them. But kick a person when they are down if it makes you feel better....
@ndebace so obviously you're here for a pitty part, BUT since you took the time to reply to me twice today i figured maybe i owed you a minute or two of my time. So i researched degenerative disease....i gotta tell ya, judging by your commitment to picking on everyone who has laughed at this video over the last months, and i mean MONTHS, you really had me feeling concerned that I was making light of a serious illness.
@SchweetDude these are serious diseases that kill people slowly and painfully. It's not funny and it's NOT laziness. I'm not here for a pity party. I commented because I am tired of the misunderstanding surrounding these terrible diseases because it leads to lack of funding for research and cures. You wanna wa wa me to feel better about yourself, go ahead. That is a reflection on your character, not mine. Very easy to mock that which you don't understand. Just pray that you never get sick.
@ndebace If comedians stopped making jokes about every sad, unpleasant, upsetting, or offensive thing, then there would be no comedians on stages telling jokes. The role of the comedian is not to avoid painful topics but to offer relief and reprieve from those very things by making light of them. Comedians joke about war, racism, degenerative diseases, death, poverty, lack of intelligence, and so on. That's how we all make it through life.
@ndebace I mean, if this type of joking offends and upsets you, then I can empathize with that, but silencing jokes about all those topics would effectively eliminate comedy and laughter from life. What good does that accomplish?
@ndebace So here is what i found on DD "A degenerative disease is a disease in which the function or structure of the affected tissues or organs will progressively deteriorate over time, whether due to normal bodily wear or lifestyle choices such as exercise or eating habits. Degenerative diseases are often contrasted with infectious diseases."
@ndebace So BASICALLY you are either aging,.....as is every other human being on this planet OR your overweight and lazy. LIKE I SAID ORIGINALLY ....WA WA WAAAAA
@SchweetDude Looking up a one sentence definition on wikipedia does not explain degenerative diseases. Degenerative diseases are genectic. I was diagnosed when I was 26 years old and a size 2. Nothing I did caused this. This is exactly the kind of stereotyping that I am talking about. Why don't you go back on wikipedia and look at the entire line of diseases listed under that short sentence-Lou Gehrig's Disease,Alzheimer's, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Huntington's Disease....
@harshroger Now, I don't want to be pretentious here, but I believe you mispoke. You meant to say "Funniest comedian ever" I've no idea how the "female", the "I have", or the "seen" got in there, but I thought I'd remove them for you.

I never get tired of watching Paula. We don't get to see her very much, since she had those problems a few years back.
I just love her. She and Ellen make me laugh out loud.
