@chrisfactoryboi Absolutely! And I was just reading an article about him using this instrument..the 6 string bass was his entire doing and it's his signature design and model he is playing :)
This is a great example of how advanced music has come since I was a boy. Keep posting these vids please. It's one of the few ways I have of finding new music written with intelligence rather than glitz and mass appeal. Thanks

Aha I know Ray Russell. Very strange seeing him in this video considering I didn't know him that far back (partly because I wasn't alive at the time).
When he was not a pro yet he cut off the pipe of the hihat stand that you attach the top cymbal to because it bugged him when he wanted to play his 8" and then he noticed that that was a mistake cause now he couldn't put the hihat any higher than just above snare level. and because he din't want to buy a new hihat stand or replace the part that he cut off... he just leanred how to play open handed
@c0d3x001 Actually he learned to play open handed because he wanted to make it easier for himself to reach the upper toms. If your hands are crossed it's pretty hard.
Simon is a right handed drummer who taught himself to play an open handed style. That is, he plays a right handed setup except he rides with his left hand on the left side of the kit. If you notice, he leads with his right hand for many of his fills and comes out of them with his right hand the same as a traditional right handed player. He will also play ride patterns on his side hats to his right...amazing talent to be able to play from either side. One of my all time drum heros. Class act too.
When I was kid, I bought the original vinyl album back in the 80's with all these songs. Probably only 2,000-3,000 copies were released. The studio version blows this away especially between 1:22 and 2:28, there isn't that guitar solo.
Brilliant words fail me as I try to tell you just how amazing Simon Phillps is. Is is just a master of all things drums and drumming. Brillaint 5 stars..
Wish I would have kept up with Simon over the years. When you are young you miss attention to details. Listened to hours of Toto and never knew who he was. At least now I can appreciate this incredible drummer.
Simon plays a Starclassic Maple kit but his configuration is custom. His bass drums are 15x24 so the tom mounts are all the way forward against the hoops. Tama has built 50 or so Simon Phillips kits that are just like his with all the hardware that he uses. It's a pretty sick kit so if you got a fat stack o' cash go getcha one.
You are talking about his 30th anniversary kit that came out last year. That's not what he is using in this video, which was recorded in the early 90's.
I think he is using an Tama Artstar series here. They got replaced by the Straclassic series later on.
Your right SimonBak90. I didn't know what yr. this vid was made. And another mistake i made is Simon is using a rack system so his tom mounts aren't even on his bass drums. Sorry about the bad info FirebrandNIRE.
100% CORRECT but sadly not a fraction as well known as drummers who couldn't play what Simon does with just ONE limb with their whole body!! And a truly amazing drum sound on top of everything else.
How about a "drum battle/show" between Simon Phillips, Neil Peart, and Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater)? Neil is the oldest, so it would be a VERY cool thing to cover so many decades of drumming just with these three drummers. We had G3, why not a D3??? Simon would be the only one playing just 1 kit
I had a similar thought recently......of course you could come up w/all sorts of combinations..................but my thought was Simon, Gregg Bissonette, Rod Morgenstein and Steve Smith. Four of my favorites that are all great, well rounded, play anything drummers. I know Gregg is friends w/Steve and Simon....not sure about Rod....East coast guy................Going to see Bissonette in two week........it would be cool if Simon showed up................Bozzio has before...........good times!!!
I love his whole approach to the drums, a real master that's spent his entire life pursuing his purpose.
I admire and am inspired by him enormously.
The other musicians are also at the top of their game (though excuse me, I don't know anything about them other than I really like what they are doing !).
But most players I've seen who plays open-handed still has the ride on the right side and the hi-hat on the left, they just don't cross their arms when playing on the snare and hats.
Having both on the same side seems a bit awkward, but i guess it makes sense of you want to ride with your left hand and still play open handed.
I see what you are saying and you're right., More open handed guys have their ride on the right which means no crossover. Simon Phillips is so talented that he can play either way with ease and even has a tom on the right that is bigger and a tom on the left that is bigger which allows him to go both ways(no pun intended).Mike Mangini's whole set does that! There is one video listed to the right in related videos where Simon does crossover but I think it's just for effect and showing off!
Have you hear his album "protocol"?. I have it on tape but the cd is hard to find and very expensive. He actually plays all the instruments himself on it. Not only is he a god on the drums,he plays guitar and keys as well.

Yeah, Simon can do a lot of fun stuff with his kit. Like the crossing-his-arm-hitting-those-chinas-thing that is a bit of his signature move.
Mangini has a pretty unusual setup too, three bass drums and a small snare in the tom rack directly above the normal snare...
