yeh pretty much - after acid house n all the illegal raves. Old skool hardcore and rave breaks moved into the clubs and tunes like SMD#1 and toytown marked the start of the happy era - the breaks got phased out and it became the kick drum led hardcore we know and love (I read this by the way im not old enough to remember it!). Dirtier, darker tunes kept the breaks and became DnB and jungle but i dont know much about that because like u, for me its all about the HARDCORE!!!!
