Dude. You so right. Check out 'Democratic schooling' if you haven't read about it. I've got a blog about this kind of thing and I'm writing a kind of 'student manifesto' about working for changes to the education system. I'll link you up if you're interested...!
Sorry to be the really annoying girl here, but would someone mind explaining the British school system to me? It severely confuses me, seeing as it's ridiculously different from our system over here in Canada, haha.
We all have our own ways of doing things. In Scotland, where I live, we start school at 4/5 years old and stay on at Primary School until we are 11/12 (From Primary 1 to Primary 7) then we move to Secondary or High School. When you are 14 you start your Standard Grades which is the minimum education you require to leave school. You can leave school at Secondary 4 (age 16) or stay on until Secondary 6 (age 18)[and do your highers]. Further education is available in collage and university.
at my old school, we had benchmarks ALL the time. i think it was 9 for english, science, and history (3 each) and I think it was 6 for math...then we had these msa's (maryland state assessments) for english, science, and math. then for advanced math students, they had to take final exams and a high school assessment (hsa) if you were in algebra (thank god geometry didn't have one). but yeh. it SUCKED!
We're basically heading down the chinese path with school work 24/7 but instead ending up not learning one damn thing after a wasted childhood. (Canadian education at least) It's like working in a factory, except you don't get paid. and you even get less time in jail for murder, than the time you have to spend going to school.
in the next few years, students will have to stay on to school til 18! im lucky, i can leave school when im 16, but people in the school years below me are unlucky..
its bad enough that we have to spend 11years of our childhood in school, but an extra 2 years is ridiculous. When my mum left school she was only 12! times have changed...
I have to agree. I started in a preschool type program before I even turned one year old and have been in school ever since. It wasn't until two summers ago I experienced what it was like to not be in school, and since then I have grown to dislike school quite a lot because I realize there is so much more out there besides it. As they say, "don't let school get in the way of your education."
i lik school and stuff and learning things what ive never learnt be4.
but the thing is some of theteachers are just so lame.i think that the teachers should make their lessons more fun so the children dnt reli losetheir concertration lol
as i teacher, you bring up some valid points,we live in a learning world that honestly does not learn... lol so ya we re live the past, I make learning fun, but i cant say for other teachers... so ya less grading and testing made formal and more informal assessment
The government is obsessed with targets for everything and so we have to have tests and grades to make sure that everyone is pushing themselves to the limit (and is 100% stressed out.)
A education shouldn't leave someone with the thought that they have wasted their time learning useless facts or stressing out whether they pass exams I know you need some sort of measuring stick to judge ones progress in school but there should be other factors that count for getting a useful education and not just passing exams or enduring rigid cirriculums
have you heard of the Summerhill school? it's an alternative school in England that doesn't give exams and they don't make kids go to lessons if they don't want to. sounds brilliant.
we've got a couple alternative schools here in the states too. I unfortunately go to a very traditional school where they bludgeon you to death with grades and exams. poo.
What always used to bug me wasn't just how much kids are examined (although I agree that it's far too much these days), but how, whenever students do well in exams, the government decides that the only reason for this is that the exams are getting easier.
I worked damn hard at my exams when I was in school, and so did all my mates, but, rather than being congratulated on having acheived results that we deserved, we were told that we'd had it easy.
I really love these style of videos because it makes me feel I actually learn stuff from youtube. Btw...was it just me that noticed those lil changing notes in the background?
We were debating about this today, cause mwe had like 4 family friends round, and we were talking about this topic for ages. I love your accent/impression for the quotes :D
=P Nice subject. I think if it interests you, go for it. You do well enough with the news and what interests you will probably interest us. And by us I mean cool people...and by cool people I mean nerds. But hey, nerds rock, right?
nice little background chages lmfao...and yea totally...i do horribly on tests...yet I get all the concepts...it's stupid...but yea...good point...favorited that vid :D

These are common dreams and show what a deep, long-lasting negative psychological impact our education systems have on us. Cheers, Jaz - good one!
Here in the U.S., the No Child Left Behind program of Bush is the same kind of evaluation testing you're talking about. It's resulted in the students being taught how to perform well on the tests by which the schools are graded rather than teaching the students a normal curriculum.
the education system is always going to be fucked up... recently in Australia there were MPs who wanted children's body weight to be included on their school reports to try and control the little fatties... *sigh* they'll never get it right
My little brother Alexander didn't have to start proper education until 6. So he had a lot of time to learn how to play, re-create, and form friendships with fellow children.
Not only is forcing small children to work from such a young age stressful and producing terrible results, I believe it must be responsible for the many anti-social youths that today's society is so rife with...
tehe, i have to admit when in black&white you look a bit like tom/randomprodinc!!

Why take young children out of a home environment where there is a ratio of a few kids per parent and put them in a classroom where there are 20 or more per teacher? No matter how well intentioned the teacher may be, it is not possible to give each child the attention that a parent would. There is quite a strong movement to home schooling here to avoid the problems in the schools.
I surely agree with your message Jazza. I go to TVU college here in Reading in Berkshire doing steps course. Exams are coming so I must get ready for that.
another jazza classic. Couldn't agree with you more. I find it funny how they had to do a study to prove that kids are under stress and school is no fun. Why not just ask the people who are going through it.. or just look around. Fantastic vid!
I reckon that I will enjoy any videos that you post.
You don't look tired and dead, you look cute! :)
I liked your signs, and the singing at the end too. :D
& I agree with your message. For example, I would enjoy college much more if they didn't make me take general required classes that have nothing to do with what I'm going to major in.
This is 100% true and perfectly worded and presented. I can't think of a single person not in government who would disagree with you, and I think this video deserves to be featured so that the voices of the public can be heard on what, let's face it, is pretty much the most important issue. Fantastic.
My personal belief is that the real reason the British students underperform in school is because the British students are stupid. All you have to do is be a YouTube member and visit videos from UK Tubers to see that this is so. j/k! I love the Brits!
The performance of the student is expressed through the grade/s though - or at least it should be.
I think the subjects I take (History, Psychology and film studies) are fun but there's always an emphasis on how hard the exams are, even though we're told it's not too hard to get top grades. ¬.¬

I think the way the school system has changed too much for any comparison to be valid.
Churchill would have had a teacher at home before being sent to school when he was older, so his education would have started sooner than 8.

& I agree with your message. For example, I would enjoy college much more if they didn't make me take general required classes that have nothing to do with what I'm going to major in.

yeah thats an american thing i think
you have a much broader curriculum and less in depth where as ours is more foused on specific things and more in depth.
and aww

Yea, it is an American thing and it's lame.
(unless you go to a more specialized school like some art school or something.. then, I believe it's a different story.)

I like the newsy vids, Jazza. Definitely do more of them.

Ur thick

Loving the "Newsy" videos, very cool and informative
Keep at it and one of em'll get featured easy.
Especially liked the posh lady impersonation, that was a winner!

Schools (and the government) don't seem to realise that the main cause of people getting lower grades is because the kids are bored.
If the people being educated find it fun, they would want to do it, which would mean that their grades would go up.
TheBorzoi 4 years ago
The performance of the student is expressed through the grade/s though - or at least it should be.
I think the subjects I take (History, Psychology and film studies) are fun but there's always an emphasis on how hard the exams are, even though we're told it's not too hard to get top grades. ¬.¬

Do you always have those paper signs?!
And I agree but I'm out of education now so... I don't care.
ha ha ha I'm so funny.

That ending bit was classic Jazza.
Yeah I mean education is way too stressful and doesn't give to the students enough.
