@jhbonarius They add a deep mellow bass accompaniment to the guitar. I think it would be more noticible if you heard the guitar isolated, then both. Listen to an Andy Mckee song called 'Gates of gnomeria'. The sub-bass harp strings form a huge part of that song :)

@UdealtIt You can learn at any age, but it takes time and dedication. You can order instuments off the internet, and I'm sure that there are some free lessons available on the internet if you cannot find a teacher.

However much time you're willing to practice and dedicate to your instrument and technique is how good you'll be. It can be challenging for older perople, but that shouldn't discourage you. With LOTS of practice and time you can accomplish anything.
