  • wow thx

  • then when is the BODMAS rule applied?

  • Thank you so much this was very helpful!!

  • its pretty easy to understand and I'm just starting to learn

  • OH WOW!

  • thanks for going over the small steps

  • See I think all schooling should be done on video because I can just rewind something or pause if I need to.

  • Oh my god! I actually feel a lot smarter. Ha! I never paid attention to math in school, but now I understand,

  • Hi thanks it looks like this time I am going to learn Algebra thanks

  • Thanks for the videos, they help a lot. I tried studying the old school way ( with books ) and I find it harder to pay attention.

  • Hey thanks man im doing my ged and u have been my godfather in this algebra thing cuz i had never studied it before... So thanks for make it so easy peace

  • THANK YOU! I am having to take Algebra in college and needed to remember the basics so I could pick up where I left off! You're a life saver.

  • OMG thank you, you make it so easy!!!!!!! my algebra teacher makes it so hard and confusing hahaha i wish you were my teacher :)

  • thanks this helped spark my memory

  • I want to thank you for posting math territorial videos, they are very helpful. Thanks again!

  • now i like this teacher i can understand what he is saying he explains so much better then others i have seen

  • thank you for posting this

  • Thanks for this video , it help me so much

  • Thank you soooo very much!!!!!!

  • i see no point in learning math like this, i am never going to use it in the real world ever

  • @Annex2991 Good luck getting into collegue.

  • @RyuMSEA Good luck getting into college with spelling like that.

  • @alexmeanberg Already graduated and the error was a typo. :P

  • @RyuMSEA already in college, speak for yourself

  • @Annex2991 Okay :D Good luck graduating :3

  • awesome class

  • awsome class

  • yeaa its easy D:

  • this gave me a frickin headaxhe when i was a sophonore and junior in highschool now i feel completely stupid that i didnt get it :(

  • at 5:02 is the only one i dont undstandd

  • 14 people mitakenly clicked dislike. This video is nice and easy to understand

  • @holyshadow180... No 3x=27 means 3 x what = 27.

  • I'm in 7th grade and skipping pre al and going straight into algebra and I was a little worried but this video made a lot of sense and was soooooooo easy!!!!! I'm not a nerd but I am excited about algebra!!! Thx dude that made the video!!!!! (=

  • I got it all up too 4.55 where you devide, why devide?

    So is 3x = 27 rlly 3 multiply by 27??? I got lost!!!!

  • A superb tutorial. Thank you very much.

  • I wonder why I'm watching this video if I'm just 7... oh yeah, my teacher said that I'm bad in math... jk

  • thx a loooot !

  • Explained very well. ty

  • great video! thanks!

  • i just went through pre algebra algebra 1, geometry( does has algebra) and algebra 2 ..i dont want any more algebra in my life!!

pre algebra with like c , algebra with a b, geometry with c (sophomore year the lazy one) and algebra 2 with an a :) i feel so proud of myself x9

  • Im just watching this cuz I forgot how to do algebra. Hahah

  • Thanks for the vid friend, crisp clear and very straightforward, I had forgotten my algebra since the last time I was in a classroom about 35 years ago, and watching you just once, brought everything back to me. just like riding a bike lol!

  • Excellent explanations and examples.... I taught a 10 year old boy this stuff the other day using my own method, which is very similar to yours... he grasped it straight away... Cheers :)

  • make the 95,00 views 106,600

  • chrz m8

  • you make it look easy >.< buuut im only a yr 8 so.....( 8th grade in american, if you didnt know alredy) btw, thanks

  • thank u, this really help my understand everything a lot clearer. my math teacher has been rushing things lately -_- and knowing me i'm not going to pay attention if the first sentence he says doesn't make sense to me.

  • man, if x + 4 = 12, then weouldnt x = 12 becuse you cancel it on eitherside?

  • @twizy123 You don't Actully "cancel it" you just move it to the other end.

    Try this

    x - 5 = 12

  • @twizy123 Not quite sure what you meant, but try thinking of it this way:

X by itself does not equal 12, but if you add X + 4 you = 12. What you want to find is what X would equal without the 4. So you can subtract the 4 that is added to the X to put X on its own, leaving you with basically X + 0 = 12. However, the rule is that you must do to the right side of the equal sign on what you do to the left. Its kinda like saying X without the 4 is the same as 12 without a 4. 12-4=8, so X = 12-4 AKA 8

  • Been watching these because I haven't been in school for 5 years. Refreshing my memory. And this stuff is so easy. Good video.

  • Thanks for the detailed explanations . I don't need short cuts now I understand how to do it.

  • You are my new best friend..Yay!

  • i don't know why this teachers make it harder that it is

it doesn't ned theese kind of actions in my school we learn it shorter and the result is the same

for excample why is it nessecary to makex+4-4=12-4

in my school we just send 4 in the other side with the opposite sign

    x+4=12

    x=12-4

    x=8

  • @superpowergirl2 Your shortcut is good, but is the subject of another, future video. When students first encounter these skills, often they understand better when they do it this way, and then they reach a point where they can do it your way.

I feel that 95,000 viewers (so far) must mean the video is good.

  • Yeah, sorry... I don't understand why you would do it the long way, makes no sense in my mind, and is confusing the hell out of me. Please let me know if there is any actual reason? Cheers

  • @superpowergirl2

Because teaching others in dealing with something as fragile and precise as math, you'd want to break it down the most you can so there's no gap in between understanding WHY. When you figure out a short cut, its easier for you to solve the problem for YOURSELF, but to understand HOW you did it is just as important to learners, not just finding the answer.

  • @superpowergirl2 The simplest method is this one:

    x+4=12 | -4

    x=8

Still, the answer is the same anyway :)

  • @superpowergirl2 thats what my school does too!

  • @superpowergirl2 We learned it this way in our school and it is very helpful especially now in Calculus class that im taking

  • i randomly started looking up learn algebra vids and yours is very helpful i shall b rewinding as much as i need thanks a million :D

  • Too fast...

  • @CAMAYRABANO Try using the pause button, and rewind as needed.

  • @dougsimmsonline Hi, could you tell me how i would compound mass squared in lets say a hypothetical Higgs field that gave matter increased mass at increased velocity. What I'm looking at is this..matter transfers mass back and forth into the field increasing the mass factor by 2, and the speed of light c will be divided by the velocity? would it be mc=(m2xv/c)?

  • I like math; math doesn't like me.

    ='[

  • Genius! thanks a million buddy!!!! =D

  • Thank for the videos.they are extremely helpfull considering that I want to go back to school and math has always been my most difficult subject. You make it look easy and interesting. A++

  • these vids r step one im making my life awesome

  • The good ol' days... :(

  • Thanks for your video. You have just refreshed my Algebra which I took 24 years ago...

  • i've seen a couple of these videos and i think you are doing a great job.. thanks and please keep posting.

  • i've seen a couple of your videos and think they are great... please keep this up, i think its great

  • Awesome teaching! I wish there was more good teachers like you in public schools

  • thx thia really helped!!! :D

  • this really helped, thank you very much

  • Thank you that was lovely

  • i have an Algebra 1 pretest does anyone know whats going to be on it ( i'm stupid!)

  • @ 4:55 ... Please tell me why you divide it 3? That part I don't get. Please help ... thanks! :)

  • *correction* why divided by 3? :)

  • @LAVAKAz I divide both sides by 3 because I have 3x = 27. I want to isolate my x, which is always the goal in Algebra. Since the x has a 3 with it, which it is being multiplied by (that's what 3x means) I do THE OPPOSITE, which is to divide by 3. That causes the two 3's to cancel each other out, which leaves the x all alone - isolated, which is what I want.

  • At 3:52 you done: x+4-4=14-4

where did you get all the fours from??

  • Nice call it the inversion rule

  • this helped SO much! thanks, I got an A in my algebra test cus of you! =D

  • awsome it helped me alot wish my luck on my Mids tommoro

  • Very awesome job man

  • This is a great simple instruction video; but my problem is that I can just look at the problem and come up with the right answer...without having to do any of the work...and that doesn't work LOL

  • Hey thanks, this helped.

  • What do you do when it is like Example: X=4+4

  • cheers m8

  • great, thanks mate

  • oooo this is making sence.. thank you very much.

  • I don't get it.. I just think that some people aren't wired for this.. However, my writing skill's are quite advanced - always have been.. Just as it holds true in Algebra, one talent cancels out the other I suppose.. Sure would be nice to be good at both though.. So hard to remember because there is nothing that triggers the thought of "relevance" to implement the correct formula.. Does that make sense?

  • very helpful its so simple the way u show thank u

  • I dont get it ??

  • Why is it that all the years of high school I could never grasp something this simple, and here I am at the age of 25...looking back wondering if i was retarded when I was younger cuz this is soooo easy hahah. I think I was too concerned about why this canceled or why that canceled...It doesnt matter though, it JUST DOES lol. Good video

  • THANK GOD FOR YOU, my maths teacher is horrific, and i have a exam tomorrow just reminding myself of the basics! Thankkk yoooou.

  • i still don't get it. I have always been bad with math, although he sounds like he is teaching it correctly and he is showing his work, I'm still lost.... :-(

  • My brain hurts @__@

  • thanks very much, this is great ;) just going back to learning my school day gcse maths home studying at the age of 28, this is very helpful,, I've just sat here and already learned something. keep posting the vids please ;) many thanks

  • thanks for putting this up free of charge. you have been a big help on countless people.

  • thank you

  • WOW thanx i learnt much more from this than from my maths teacher :) great job :P

  • thanks alot!!

  • @SF004 you start outside of the parentheses.

    24 divided by 3 = 8.

    So now you have (6 - y) = 8.

Now you can remove the parentheses, which is now, 6 - y = 8.

You're trying to find y so you subtract 6 from both sides to get -y = 2.

To get positive y, you need to multiply both sides by -1 which will now conclude that y = -2.

  • simply amazing, boy i can't help but think how modern technology has greatly improved our lives. One can simply just visit a website and find almost anything. (youtube)

  • What?? Why are you going so fast? Now I know why I hated this in High School. 34 years later and nothing much has changed. Could it be that some minds who get straight "A"s on every other subject just cannot figure Algebra and geometry.? Could it be a mental restriction on some people? I've reviewed your vid several times and either your too fast or my brain does not register. Yet I can memorize verses of great statements of historical figures and quote graet poetry. It just doesn't register

  • Thanks Bro.

  • i understood everything...if only i could go back to school to get at least a ged....

  • @Sirimico I might be wrong but aren't GED courses offered in all public colleges? That's where I got mine~ Check yours out, you might find a way. =)

  • thanks man! I have to go for my accuplacer test tomorrow & have been out of school 20 years now, so I need all the help I can get! thanks this has helped

  • Hi doug, What about this question. (6 - y) x 3= 24 ?

  • This video help me a lot to refresh my algebra. This is very helpful because you can rewind several times until you learn well.Thank you and keep up the good work!

  • thank you! :D

  • Wonderful!!

  • hahaha barcelona jersey!!!

  • I couldn't understand the guy...or see what he wrote on the board.

  • @Jachella That's funny, because (so far) 46588 people COULD understand and read what's on the video.

  • @dougsimmsonline Can you explain to me why 1:18 you add 4+4 to get rid of the 4. Why not do the same as your first equation and do 4-4 to eliminate the 4. would appreciate your answer.

    thanx

  • @ismaelovic71 To get rid of the 4 we do the opposite of its sign. In the first example the 4 is positive, so we do the opposite and subtract 4 from both sides. In the 2nd example the 4 is negative, so we do the opposite and add 4 to both sides.

  • @dougsimmsonline

Okay, in the first example 4-4 whipe each out. But wouldn't 4+4 be 8? Why do they cancel each other out?

  • @Adrastos64 Because 4-4=0, not 8.

  • Honestly.... 4+4 cancels out? ,,,, really? Dude... its common sense. Of course it doesnt. -4+4 would cancel out. 4-4 would also cancel

  • @Adrastos64 the first 4 is negative so X-4+4 = 0 so they cancel out

  • @Adrastos64 It's not 4+4 it's 4+ -4 which can also be expressed as 4-4 see? what you're not looking at is the subtraction sign, get it?

  • @ismaelovic71 Because with subtraction (-), he explained you have to do the opposite, which is addition (+)

  • @dougsimmsonline make that 46589! Thanks for the vid!

  • @dougsimmsonline Its hard for me to put into words really, its where mass squared is equal to velocity as a fraction of the speed of light(c) I'm ok when it comes to hypothetical, out of the box thinking, but the visualisation out ways my calculation skills if you understand what I'm saying. i can see what i have to say, but i may as well be talking in Chinese half of the time.

  • @Jachella Get glasses if that doesn't work get proper sleep, because i didn't even know what algebra was truly until i seen this because i was placed in a special ed class in high school and we didn't do anything in there, my teachers were horrible but i get the concept through this guy =) good luck on understanding.

  • Thats sounds so much less harder :)

  • OMG i just realize how math easy it is after this vid, i wish i had a teacher like u

  • thanks for the help doug

  • Hm. Learned this is 5th grade.

  • thank you for a very clear explanation.. :) I'm am a 17 year old student at the Philippines. :D I just want to refresh my memory from my old lessons. Thankyou alot. :)

wish you good health and God Bless you. :)

  • thank you! ^____________^

  • this really helps a lot omg

  • Yay Barcelona. But thanks for this, I already knew it but this method makes a little more sense somehow.

  • Thanks Doug, I wish my high school algebra teacher was this clear.

  • I can't find part 2 to this video anywhere!

  • u explain it sooo good i really wish u were my teacher or tutor. im goin back to college and have to take algebra and i havent done it for along long time lol.

  • pls explain it slower plsssssssssssssssss.........!!!! it's hard to understand especially im not enlgish

  • good video, I struggle with algebra but being able to rewind the lesson is a big plus. thanks

  • nothing that easy!

  • OMG I totally got that, wow. Thankyou so much.

  • good teaching man they could have just said that when i was in college i didnt finish unfortunatly i plan on going back soon

  • same

    thanks for the vids

  • haha

  • Damn it was easy to understand but you move fast.

    Thanks

  • Cheers mate, really helped

    PS. lol ur bald

  • I must say you are a very good teacher after 20 years I am returning to school and I had to recap all my math and you made me understand it perfectly. Thank You

  • Why do algebra teachers move so fast? From 4:45-5:00, I had to rewind it several times just to see what he was trying to do.

  • @indianajoe219: The fact that you CAN rewind is why teaching onvideo works so well.

  • I understand that, but algebra teachers always go very fast at certain parts and don't explain why they are doing what they are doing at that moment. They also all seem to contradict each other which makes this subject even more difficult to grasp.

  • @indianajoe219 Can you give an example of one of these contradictions? There are is often more then one way to solve a problem but usually only one is the shortest and the easiest. This is know as the "optimal" solution.

  • @dougsimmsonline True, by rewinding you effectively "erase" the board of a lot of extra information. It can be very tough to find your place once a completed problem with all of its steps is in place.

  • I can't give you an exact example. I've taken Algebra (or should I say, TRIED) to take it on three seperate occasions at local colleges and the teachers all will show you the problem, then totally confuse you a few minutes later with the supposedly same rules. Even students in the class had to point out that the answers were not right.

  • Brilliant and clear demonstration thank you!

  • thank you so much I really needed help and you got me there!

  • keep making these it really helped i had an e in alegebra 1 now i got a b+ because of you

  • Great job I am terrible in math and i just learned a good deal watching this short video.

  • why is math so hard

  • @MacPr0xnxx0 Because nature is very difficult to pridict and control preciely, and that is what math TRIES to do. Also, every math course you ever take depends on the skills of ALL of the previousl math courses ever taken. Knowing how to do algebra requires that you know multiplication, fractions, decimals, adding, subtracting, and dividing. Learning to multiply requires you to know how to add, and knowing how to add requires that you know how to count. No other subject goes from K to college.

  • I find this page more useful. It helps me understand the basic concept of algebra, and I can clearly hear what he is saying.

  • this helped me so much thank u!!!! ^_^ i almost flunked math cause of algebra! thank u so much!

  • Hell yea, ur the man!

    thanks alot, this helped much.

Barcelona is the shit too haha

  • ur the best man

  • FENERBAHCE:d:D

  • i really like dhis video of urs. because to tell the true; *sigh* ok i've have a (disability-problem) :( yeah sad is't it? BUT! with a help of your smart and 'Algebra #1 then maybe i'd can do it.. if i can focus and concetrion on math, besides i'd know im... slow BUT!! i need to work on it & is my fist time on ALGEBRA ONE in school & home as well. so I'm going to say this to you: Thank you :) *oh* and i'm going to give it a 4-POINTS!!! :D

  • Stay positive and keep trying. Watching the video more than once might help.

  • You are most definately the best math teacher I've ever seen.

  • itd be beter with a girl teacher

  • Thank you. You tought me something that I've never understood.

  • Now I'm understanding.Thanks.

  • Great video. In 5:53 you taught me what my grade 8 teacher couldn't do in 10 months.

  • You F*cking Rock!

Thank you for taking the time to do these videos, they def. come in handy when its late at night and don't have access to help from school or the like.

    Thanks!

  • I really need this. Algebra is a major problem for me. I was much better at geometry and calculus algebra is just so many details.

  • great video VERY helpful. thanks

  • Awesome job, the way you explained makes it to seem so much easier...

  • The 6 most important minutes you will ever spend on Mathematics. The method and logic presented here is useful from the first time you meet algebra to completing a University degree. Guaranteed to make sense of Algebra! I can't recommend this highly enough and I have been teaching for 13 years. Way to go Doug. Keep them coming. Carima

  • VISCA EL BARCA! lol

    awesome

  • how do you do negative and positive algebra?

  • a negative number times a negative number makes a positive number.

    eg. -4 x -4 = 16

A positive number times a negative number makes a negative number.

    eg. -2 x 3 = -6
