A bit of criticism, Mr. Hannan: your speaking style, as brilliant and entertaining it may be, stands in some contrast to the state of your country and the grave subjects you talk about. The contents of your speeches hit the point, but you sell them as if you'd be selling a new marketing scheme to a bunch of salesmen. Like everyone including yourself agrees to not take this all too seriously but also to put a good face on the matter.
The popularity of this Oxford scholar is not based in his style. Even if it were American (which it isn't), it would be no matter at all. He succeeds because he can articulate ideals that resonate with the overwhelming majority of the British public. Trust me, as a US citizen since birth, this man's style is NOT typical of what you see in my country. Usually we are presented with 2 or 3 glittering generalities about gay marriage or the war and no explanation or logic.
Mr. Hannan clearly explains his logic and defends his position against criticism with sound points. American politicians say things like "I believe in God and God loves this country" and get elected. Mr. Hannan is in almost every way the opposite of what I would expect to see here, and I would give anything if our politicians were more like him.
The reason that Hannan has made such an impact with his comments is not because they're well researched (which they aren't) or incredibly well delivered (which they are), but because this is an American-style of politics and public speaking applied to British politics. Love it or loathe it, it is different.
Ehhh, no it's not? Just by going to wikipedia and checking the summary, you can see that he's telling the truth.
Hannan does exaggerate a little from time to time, but in the long run those exaggerations are going to look like wishful thinking. Statism has a tendency to gain ground.
Not "President of Europe", but "President of the Council of the EU". The point was, that it would still be a leader-like position.
In the cases of the criminal justice system and foreign policy, it would expand their power at the EU level. Certainly it wouldn't create these things, but make them more integrated and powerful.

I don't think the principle behind his opposition does still stand if he is going to present the facts in such a misleading manner.
I can understand that not everybody takes a pro-eu approach but euro sceptics should present the facts as they are and then explain their opposition, not attack a straw man.
Ultimately what Hannan has said about the Lisbon treaty is not true or at the very least is misleading and that undermines the validity of his argument.
I fail to see how your vote could have been based on the promise of a referendum since there was consensus amongst the major parties that there should be a referendum, so this would have been one of the least useful criteria in helping you to decide which party to vote for...

I'm guessing you are up for destroying britains sovereignty. with sovereignty we can choose whether to be part of a war but under the power of the EU we will be forced into it. Am I getting close ? .
gunnermac70 People here in the USA are asking the same questions. Look how many in America sacrificed to stop Hitler, Stalin and Mussolini?
Unfortunately, there are still too many young ones who have been dumbed down in public school, and raised to believe that American Idol, Dancing With The Stars, and Lost, are more deserving of their precious time! The brave ones are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, thinking that they are protecting us. They need to be protecting us from our gov't!
NO WE WANT HIM FIND YOUR OWN - RON PAUL WILL DO :) ( I do think Dan is a more eloquent speaker but Ron Paul has got a track record of 20 years of consistency)
You need to become a US citizen, and somehow get into the senate and do these speeches. Or run for president. We NEED your wisdom and fearless confronting nature in our senate. Totally farfetched, but I hope for a man like you. Great job sir
Indeed. Personally, I'm sure that most people who think as I do. The problem is... I don't know where they are, who they are, how to contact them, what we can do etc.
I think the British, and I'm guessing the Amercian, people have become too comfortable in being looked after whilst our freedom slowly, insiduously slips away.
Sounds like you guys are starting to get things done though, with the Campaign for Liberty and the 9/12 Project. We Brits could do with groups like those!
Bezwaart123 I have seen video of Britons marching in the streets after a man was convicted of murder for killing one of two robbers who broke into his house. They were also protesting gun rights, and the losing of their sovereignty. Do you have talk radio?
There are over a hundred groups in America trying to stop this train of socialism, but they need to unite, as they did, on Tea Party day, April 15th. When the snowball starts running down the hill, it gathers momentum!
Yes, I heard about those protests, though I have no idea how they were organised or whether there were any groups involved.
Regarding radio here... Well, it's heavily dominated by the left-wing BBC - they literally have dozens of national and local channels broadcasting 24/7. There are other popular stations, but they tend to focus on music, like ClassicFM. To be honest, I prefer American shows like Bill Bennett.
I hope the groups in the US unite. America has always lead the way for freedom!
As much as I have criticized the US in the past I really do hope they return to the once great nation they were.
We in the UK have very little hope of overcoming socialism, centralized power and un-elected "experts" running our country... they've been here for so long and employ so many people the only way we would even think about it is if the USA can return to its founding principles, prosper and show our people how much better we would have it under a similar system.
I like it. What is unclear however, is whether or not Daniel is just in favour of just reforming the EU, or getting the UK out of it. Daniel seems to keep skirting around this issue, so it's about time we had an honest answer...??

Everything he says is right, except I don't think a Tory government will make things much better unfortunately. They are all part of the same ruling class.

I'm sorry but if you actually read the treaty then you would see that he is lying...
It does not create a 'President of Europe'
It does not 'give' the EU a foreign office/policy because it already has one
It does not 'give' the EU a criminal justice system because it already has one
It does not 'give' the EU legal personality because it already has it...
As NaMgKCa says, Maastricht, all the reforms he is talking about have already taken place...
