  • guessing your mobo died eventually, damn zotac

  • @DrewMusicc why?

  • If you want a completely quiet build just passively cool all the components including the power supply.

  • i have the same lookin ram modules lol, exept i have 6gbs on the pc i use to play and do stuff. overkill indeed

  • over kill lol

  • what case is it ? please answer

  • Fix your cables, its gonna overheat and die

  • Nice pc mouse you shit on it or something so its not slippery?

  • U have to find 15mm thick case fan .

  • its not itx/micro-itx, its atx/micro-atx...

  • @fireballs399 no its definitely Mini-ITX

Unfortunately though just a few weeks ago it failed. I think the mobo died. Its a shame as it worked so wonderful and was so powerful.

  • @stevyd10 which case

  • @stevyd10 no Its ATX

  • @crazyredneckwifknife its an mini itx

  • @fireballs399 there's atx and itx

  • @fireballs399 I belive he knows the mother board he bought better then you

  • @fireballs399 Phail much? Don't you know that there are special standards like Mini-iTX, Pico-iTX and stuff like that? Get your facts right dude..

  • I love ghetto builds like this! :) Who cares if the cables are hanging out and poking through various holes in the case?! That's what makes your PC unique! :D

    Nice video!

  • hi what case is that?

  • In Win mini itx newegg has them

  • Yeah remove that top fan its just making noise

  • hey can yo uo somthing... remove that fan from the outside.... its realy irratoing looking and ita irratating to me to see a fan on the outsie D:< eather way u dont need it!

  • You know that you can run a system fanless providing you set the clock speed low enough and have a low load on the powersupply. Takes a bit of testing to make sure its stable over any length of time though.

  • Nice firewall mate! Thanks for posting this vid.

I find it very strange I have a hard time finding a ready to go firewall system, that I'm considering to build one myself too. Or use a netbook even. Maybe my searching is failing. I know my 10 year old AMD-K6 200MHz Debian firewall will fail soon :-(

I see nice 8watt PC's for a 1001 purposes, except for the router/firewall functions I need. I'm curious what hardware you used (mainboard, NIC) and what OS/software you have/will put on this one.

  • .... DONT USe A NETBOOK! -_- they have 1 eathenet im on one and thats a fucking waste of a netbook -_-

  • Not to poke or anything, but that kit is seriously overpowered for a firewall, not to mention more expensive than other itx hardware that would do the job + be cheaper. Unless you are dual using it as a server + firewall, you don't need 2Gigs of ram, the SSD or more than a 1GHz cpu.

Personally I would have gone with something like a Via C3 processor, 256-512Mb ram and a Flash card preloaded with smoothwall/ipcop/m0n0wall whatever. With an external psu brick. Totally fanless. :)

  • I am actually using the astaro software. I believe it had a min spec of 1.5Ghz and 1GB of ram. Previously we had it on a p4 3Ghz/1GB ram/ Slow hdd. This setup worked fine but you could tell the firewall was slowing the connection down. The firewall's you suggested are consumer level - the astaro software is aimed at the enterprise level. it has to manage all the email that goes through our servers. (its alot!) We are hardly consumer level with the servers and computers...

  • ...

I can see your point though it may be a little OTT but atleast it is not causing any lag when connecting to websites. The SSD is also amazing for the cache as my internet connection is not great so it certainly speeds up the page loading :)

  • fair enough, I was presuming you were using it for home use, I have mine running at 166Mhz or 200Mhz passive I believe, which is ample for my needs. Ofc if you are filtering lots of spam etc.. you are going to need something beefier cpu wise.

  • @LeJimster

Astaro has a lot more capabilities than smoothwall/ipcop/m0n0wall, hence it needs more power.

I have used all of them at one time or another.

  • hey could you make another video about how you went around making the firewall work

    sorry if you already have

  • that is Great for Home Theater PC

  • its certainly fast :)

  • With this just being a firewall, why did you go for such a powerful CPU, could have saved some money and just gotten a dual-core atom with a flash memory stick for the OS.

Nice build though, always loved the mini-itx format.

  • You should've gotten a scythe shuriken coole. Zalmans can get quite loud at load. If it gets to irritating, try using acostifoam padding in your case. Overall, I like the small form factor of an itx case.

  • I actually looked at those but i think there was a problem with it fitting. As it is running as a firewall tho its only going to be ticking over most of the time so the zalman can be at the lowest setting all the time :)

  • not a DVI-E Cable for your monitor? just a VGA?

  • my dvi "side" of my monitor died in the heat. I'm buying a new monitor soon :) tbh though it doesn't make much difference

  • My DVI cable just fucked up due to my brother. He just plugged it wrong , and now it's only using 800x600 and i need to re-plug it after each boot.

  • wow i wish my pc was that quiet lol,

    nice little build there :)

  • nice but crappy cable management

  • yea I agree :)

The cables are a little short to do anything amazing and there really isn't many places to hide them! No one will see it anyway so I just moved them away from the cpu cooler.

  • Nice! It looks expensive
