  • "Permafrost"? Unless you are above a certain latitude, like in Central Alaska, we don't have permafrost. Arden Hills? Roseville? No. Lovely video. I always enjoy your stuff.

  • @kc7fys Did I say PermaFrost? I think I said "Pimp my Crust"....

  • What clothing do you wear in your sleeping bag in cold weather? Do you wear just a base layer or full clothing? What is a good cold weather sleeping bag? I live in KY and the temp varies. Also how do you have breakfast from the hammock? Do you already have it laid out so you dont have to get out of your bag? Thanks. Love all the videos

  • @ctoole007 I wear a base layer and a couple thin fleece shirts. Add clothes during the night if needed. Hard to say on bags...so many. Depends on temps, fill, price you want to pay.

I get up and get my breakfast from my bear bag.

  • Shug, would fishing rod sleeves work as snake skins, or are they to small? BTW I love your videos, and can't wait until I get my hammock. (I ordered it yesterday!)

  • @majouner I woukd think to small...but I have none so just best to give it a try and see. You can buy some at outdoortrailgeardotcom.

  • From a total noobie, I think you for the great entertanment and information you have provided in this series

  • @tdg0101 I am bowing deeply here....hope it helped and inspired.

  • jubilation and degradation.. wow what a words...

  • @vaidotas86 I was inspired.

  • I thankee feller. All I can say is just get one...or make one. Get started and carry forth...

  • Thanks Shug. Enjoyed watching this series. New to hammocks, but have loved the idea of it for quite some time. Can't wait to get out there and spend some time amongst the trees.

  • @rlmarin1968 Whooooo Buddy! Carry on to comfort.

  • Shug, just found your homepage and learned that you are an entertainer. No wonder you are so funny. I love your vids. But do you have any that actually show you makeing some of your stuff?

  • @zekehooper Thanks....I just don't make those kinda videos. I just like to show stuff after.

  • lol Shug. I can only imagine what you were like at 10 years old...

  • @tysy73 My Mom beat me with a rubber spatula. a lot.

  • You're one crazy dude, but I loved your 10 part hammock series, learned loads and am now inspired to get out there and H A M M O C K.... Thanks again !

  • @JesterBushcraft Crazy is as crazy does and what-not. Thanks feller.

  • Well the weights vary...trip dependent. But lately my 3 season is hammock, whoopies, tree straps, black bishop bag, nacrobiners.....15 oz

    Cuben Tarp.....8 ounces.

    Top Quilt....17 ounces.

    1/2 Underquilt.....14 ounces.

Thermarest sit pad for feet... 3 ounces.

  • i noticed you didnt really talk about the weight of any of your setups. I am curious to know what the weight of your three season setup is and what items are included

  • Great videos the antics were a bit much but the info was top notch. What were those things that you were wearing in place of gloves, did you make them?

  • @finieclimber Haaaaaaa...That is just me being me. Tried to do it all serious and business-like but that did not work out to well.

The wrist warmers I have had forever. Can't find that style anymore but check wristiedotcom for something similar.

  • What material is the tarp made of?

  • @ChefBoyJL It is silnylon.....silicone impregnated nylon.

  • Believe you me, I wanna go out there and just do it.. unfortunately 97 degree NC summer days aren't very outdoor friendly. Can't wait for fall, winter, & spring. Went to the gorge about 2 weeks ago for a short hike & overnighter. Was pretty hot, but wasn't bad after a long cool dip in the Linville river. Thx for the vids, keep up the good information.

  • @srvblues00 Yeah.....hot as Hades down there now. I miss winter myself..... say hey to the Gorge for me.

  • Any reason one couldn't just use a standard tarp from a hardware store to start? I was thinking 8' wide x 11' long. This would provide nice side-side coverage, as well as long enough to extend past the cinch buckles.

  • @FAQUAD2010 For sure....many do. A bit bulky and heavy for a backpack trip IMO but doable.

  • great videos for the newbie hammocker!! spent a couple nights in a friends hammock and can't wait to get my own, i like to hike with my dogs and i was wondering what size trap would be good for keeping 2 dogs fairly dry (if you can really do that ;) ha) in a rainstorm out in NE TN (think lots of rain and wind). i think my question was answered a couple comments ago (the one about having room to move around in) but don't know if you know any hammockers with dogs who might say something else

  • @TheWillemk Big dogs....larger tarp. Wee dogs go smaller Make the dogs carry the tarp....haaa.

  • Shug, I'm still pissed off about Tupac but thanks a giggity-jillion for this series. It kept me up most of the night watching. Cheers!

  • @mostcanwait Happy to keep you up late....hope you saw the sun rise.

  • What kind of "gloves" are you using. Looks like those would be a good balance between dexterity and warmth, well not so much warmth. Sort of 60 40 or maybe 90 10.

  • @dibdevlon wrist warmers

  • Hey shug, just wanted to say that watching your videos have got me well into the idea of hammocks and tarps and am seriously considering getting myself a dd setup. I really like the idea of it all being a bit rougher than using a tent, as I find a tent can take away the being close to nature side of things. Only downfall is, here in the uk all we get is cloud and rain, no snow lol. Keep up the good work an can't wait to see what comes next.

  • @stuartmassey1 Nothing like waking up comfortable and viewing the piney woods. Then a cuppa whilst in the ol' hammock.

    Excellent.

  • Shug your videos were very entertainting and informative. I just got a Hammock couple days ago and just came back from my first camping trip using it and it was an awesome experience. Now that I have alot of your tips all I need is a tarp and I'll be ready for anything. Thanks Shug.

  • @Hammie0With0A0Cammy That is the kind of briefing I love to hear!!!

  • Shug, do you have advice on tarp size? I’d like something big enough that I have room for my hammock and gear and also big enough that on a rainy day I can move around under it some without feeling like I have to sit in the same spot to stay out of the rain. Also like to be able to use it for ground tarp camping as well if possible. Some folks swear by 8x10, others say 10x10 at a minimum. Don’t want it to be a huge sail in the wind, but large enough to offer good protection. Thanks!

  • @adaman04 Mine are 11X6 and 11X 10 .....one for winter and the 11X6 I use the rest of the ear.

  • Shug your videos rock man. so informative and entertaining - to say the least! I am very curious with your cook set up. Hillbilly stove eh?

  • @GDeadphans Thanks ....I call that pot a Hillbilly pot. Mini-Atomic alky stove .... BushBuddy Woodstove.... hillbilly pot.

  • Shug where do you get your silnylon material to make those items?

  • @kyletango I'll e-mail you the source

  • I have been watching your vids and you guys are having entirely too much fun.

  • @kyletango First off ..thank you for your service. I can act the eejit for the likes of you!

Hammmocks sure have. I like to fiddle around and they have rejuvenated my woods life.

Hope that you get one. Enjoy.

  • Eyup Shug got my DD Hammock great quality with snake skin to pack it into. going to remove tapes and replace with two climbing straps and a pair of caribiners supprised by the weight and strength of these things 9Kn and only 38 grammes each. I have also had a go at making a penny stove and again got another suprise they work real good. Looks like were going up to Scotland shortly for a swing.Keep up the good work, Where in the US are you?

    Regards Mick.

  • @qwertydumpling You are really and truly all geared up!

    I am in Minnesota.

  • hey bud whats happening out there in the intertainment world?? Got one question for ya how do you fix a little burn hole bout the size of a penscil erasor. Some people got a fire going when I was down to a stream and when I got back the ambers were flying right towards my hammock. luckly only 1 landed on the B.b but how can ya fix a hole or can ya???

  • @fustratedfisher Sew a patch or use Tear-aid.

  • Eyup shugy just bought a DD XL tarp unused as yet, but this got me thinkin about the gettin the DD Frontline Hammock to go with the tarp or the DD Travel Hammock / Bivi but was put off when I read about the not so breathable base in the travel model. Bearing in mind I am a total newbie to this, your undoubted experience will help me a lot. Would the Frontline hammock in your opinion be worth my while. Really fancy the Blackbird hammock but unavailable in Blighty

    Regards again Mick

  • @qwertydumpling I suppose .... I have never seen a DD. Hear good things about them though.

  • Your the man shug you really got me wantin to get out there, its a bit harder to find the right spots in Blighty but by no means impossible.

    Regards Mick

  • @qwertydumpling

I will be right over to help you hunt down some spots!!!!!!

Let me know how it goes.

  • Dr. Shug!

Question: what is the length of that toggle? Upon investigation, bought myself a slurpee straw and will commence to sawing..

  • @keinehausfrau Mine is 2" long..... saw away.

  • Toggles made and holes on the end. Your pull cord material? Like the idea of being able to clip to the hammock w/biner and pull out with gloves when needed.

  • @keinehausfrau

Any line will do .... I use Speer No-Tangle line.

  • Mannnn, the whole lot of vids were GREAT. Thanks for the info. I am a tent ground dweller, but my last hike on the 100 mile section of the A.T in Maine made me really want to convert to hammocks. keep up the great vids bud love them Shane

  • @fustratedfisher

Mucho Obligato and thanks! I am glad it may have been useful.

  • Clarke Hammocks Shugemery, good bad or ugly your thoughts on price, use, wear and tear resistance would be appreciated.

Your vids have helped a lot! But im lazy and would rather shell out for a finished artical than you know, go through the growing pains you obviously have done with developing a hamomck kit.

  • @SecretTrollAccount1

Sorry ... I don't know much about them but them that have 'em love 'em. They have lots of features.

    Thankee and carry on.......

  • Hey there, Rasmus from Denmark here!

Thank you for 10 great videos!

A bit crazy you are but your passion for hammocks is prety cool. Made my own to day and I'm going to sleep in to night. Who knows - maby the night after this one as well.

    Roger & over!

  • @rasmuskok

Glad that you got something out of them. I try to make them fun and have fun doing it.

I wish a comfy slumber in your new hammock!!!!

I hope to serve you in the future with more hammock fun and enthusiasm.

    Be well and happy,

    Shug

  • shug i am thinking off hicking wicklow way with a hammock in the summer. do you think the maccat micro is wide anof. at onley n60inches wide i would use it in winter as well but there would be no snow

  • @dbw16d

I think it is plenty wide ..... just make sure the ridgeline length is long enough for your hammock........

  • @shugemery when the micro says 60inches does that mean 30 on each side or 60 on each side thx for help

  • @dbw16d I would assume 30 on each side.....

  • bravo

  • @Cannonbo

    Thankee.... I bow here.

  • I can't believe a cable channel hasn't signed the Shug up for a contract yet. This stuff is gold. Shug, you need an agent.

  • @blindwhitey70

I fly low and way down below the radar!!!

    I thankee ... I do so.

  • Breaking the wind in the hammock...lol

  • @rmojo23

I know ..... I do it often..... gets the hammock swaying.

  • You finally got a BushBuddy Ultra, awesome! How do you like it?

  • @Habichtshorst

    I truly enjoy it!

  • Just took a sub to your channel, USNERDOC suggested a look and I like what I seen. Very good entertaining video. Thanks.

Still trying to get "The Old LAdy" to sew my hammock up for me. Anywho I'll document my first excursions with hammock hiking, it should be a good laugh. LOL

    Thanks Shug !!!!

  • Cool .... take a friend!

  • always funny 5/5

  • Thinking the time is now to spend some cash on a hammock. Thanks a lot Shug, How will I explain this expenditure to the Mrs.(she likes your vid's as well)? Any recomends on my first (think about my wallet) camping hammock set up? 160lbs/6'2"

  • There are so many ..... Can't go wrong with the BlackBird ... but tarp is extra. Hennessy comes with a tarp and is available at most good camp stores ..REI etc.

  • u did a lot more stuff than u normally do in this vid awesome

  • I did? Well... I better go have a nap in the hammock!

  • i unfortunately is a ground dweller. i dont got the funds to get hammock supplies. me just college student. i am going to do the AT tail in NC / TN this summer. that is if i can get people to join me. yeah i looked around on the net for like hours and speer is truly the cheapest place and best place to get any supplies.

  • Great work Shug, I learned a lot and I will be referencing these videos often, the real question is Speer Winter Tarp or Warbonnet Superfly?

  • Go Warbonnet ...Speer is not available for a short time.

  • I am definitely buying two of those once they're available.(the superfly that is) Thanks man, you don't know how much we all appreciate this along with all your other great vids. I bow to you sir :o)

  • Awesome series, Shug.

    I have but one questin....

your ELEVEN x SIX tarp LOL....

is it a perfect triangle? or are the sides on the 6' side cut differently?

i would love to see a print out... sketch... or even a picture of the tarp.

    thanks

    5*

  • Both sides are shaped the same ..... like most tarps.

i think there are pretty good views on the video ..... really just shaped the same as any cat cut tarp.

I do have some pix on hammockforums in my galley.

  • Thanks for the great series Shug. Sorry to see it come to an end. I think I'm going to cry now...

  • Shug - Another great video! I feel sad now that the Hammock How-To Series is over. It was a lot of fun and very informative with a good measure of humor! Many thanks! 5/5

  • I am gonna miss doing it. I re-learned and learned a lot by just filming stuff.

  • My friend, I hope you have some re-learning to do in the future! You have convinced me to make the hammock change, especially now that I know how to keep my buttocks warm ;-)

I think this will end up being a :hammock foundational series" and the go to reference for newbies like me. 5/5

  • that was a great ending to a great series mate, its a shame its at its end but your time and effort was well worth it. above all KEEP HAMMOCKING!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOO BUDDY
