@pattasy This seems like a simple enough method to making a turtle dock. I'm just wondering if a larger turtle would possibly scratch small pieces of it off with their claws. My RES is 26 now so she's a pretty big girl. I've gone through several of the ZOO MED docks now. The large ones aren't really that large to begin with. But over time she'll claw away at them getting up on them and then the little pieces clog up my filter. You'd think I'd be done with issues like this by now but nope.

@imortalgothic It sounds like your turtle is cold. Make sure you have a heater in the water keeping it at 76-80 degrees farenheit and have a basking dock with a proper basking lamp (not just a UV bulb, one that produces heat) centered over the basking area. Once baby turtles are warm enough they're pretty active and eat a lot.

This didnt work for me....my cork bark was fitting perfecting, i jammed in it and it was perfect. Within 4 days it shrunk..i now have a useless peice of bark that turns my water orange and makes everything slimy. And i soaked the bark, baked it, everything possible. (i bought from the same store Tilly Stuff)

@pattasy I did try a carbon filter. And i had it in the tank 2 weeks before i got the turtles to try and drain all the color out. I dont understand what happened but it was grose. My whole tank was thick and slimy and the water VERY orange. Id clean the filters DAILY and it didnt help (i did have carbon pads in the filter). I must of just got a bad peice of bark. I would still reccomend people try it, it would have been wonderful looking it if would have worked for me, i was just unfortunate.

@pattasy I made a turtle dock for my 2 red ear sliders. I had the dock angled like your turtle dock you made in the video. Same height and everything. One day my 2 turtles stood on the rear legs and climbed out. Luckily, I found them hiding and they were saved. So I bought a tank lid with lights so they cant climb out again. I suggest you should move the dock a bit lower so your turtles dont climb out or get something to cover up the top. Well, I just wanna share the idea. Thanks for the video.

I watched this video and decided to try it as a cheap alternative to buying a dock for my turtles to sit and bask on.

DONT DO IT!!! even after rinsing to make sure that theres no bits, and that all the colouration has washed off, the bark itself turns the water a nasty orange colour, which blatantly isnt healthy for your turtles. Bear in mind also, that wood rots in water a lot quicker than normal, plus mine tried to eat bits of it, which isnt good either.

Spend some cash, get the real thing.

yes, its called tanins. i mentioned it in the sidebar. Make sure you have a activated carbon filter and keep up with weekly partial water changes and it will filter out. Small amounts of tanin are not harmful. Bark, leaves and any natural woods will turn water a yellow-ish color, but it will eventually be clear again with the filtration. sorry it didn't work for you, mine held together just fine.

Hey, did you buy the curl or the slab (flat) bark? The curl seems so curved and the slab seems too flat. In your video you said it has a natural curve so does that mean you bought the slab and it was curved enough to have its own ramp? The "curl"version seems too curved? I have a very large slider and she is too big for any store bought basking docks. Your idea seems the best.

yes, i bought a large slab. the wide ones have a natural curve in them. If its not enough curve, you can wedge a second one below the waterline at an angle to make more of a ramp.

i'd put a canister filter on each side and mabe a powerhead in there somewhere to move the water around. Fluval makes good canisters. not sure about the dock, though, i like using corkbark.

it'll soften a bit in water, my turtle is huge and it holds her just fine. it'll snap if you yank it out by the middle, but it's actually quite durable for a dock.
