@Scottvfx Well, honestly, a lot of people say "a dollar store" and they just as easily mean "Family Dollar" or "Dollar General" stores, at least in my part of the country, & these stores, while selling lower priced items than places like Walmart, are not necessarily dollar-only items. And, not to put too fine a point on it, but a lot of "dollar" stores these days also sell lots of "special" items that run less than or more than a dollar...
As to the video, the DM kit is quite snazzy. very good
@mariojev the red box is all you *must* have, all this stuff is extra. you prolly want to get the rules compendium and heroes of the fallen lands next, so you can have more play options. ^_^
Hi! :) Thanks for the video, pretty useful for a bunch of ideas. :)
Just a thing: I got the starter set to get some tokens and they're great (I don't like to spend money on minis)...You have some "strange" tokens as the big one (the "MONSTER" one) and a bunch of different heroes...
What starter set did you get? I've the blue one (game starter) and the newest, the Red one and didn't find all of the tokens you show...:)
Oh...and thanks for the suggestion on FlipMats: they're great. ;)
Wow... thats a lot of uneccesary crap to play a roleplaying game (no offense). I have dice, a homemade tactical map & a pad of paper (some pencils and markers for the tactical map) & that seems to suffice. Everything else there seems to me, just to be a dsitraction to playing the actual game. It must be a 4E thing.
@ZhaneTheGreat Dude, i've never seen so much random crap used for a game... any game, outside 4E. But recently i've seen a handful of videos on youtube about DMing 4E & every DM carries an entire bag of random DM tool crap. I can only assume then that it's a 4E thing.
@matthewlane No, it's not a 4E thing. It's a "Let's organize" thing. My 3.5 DM uses almost as much stuff as this, minus only the bottle caps and poker chips. The only reason all these videos are featuring 4E DMs is because it's the newest version of D&D... duh. If 4E didn't exist, these guys would be using the exact same stuff for their 3.5 games.
And btw, it can't possibly be crap. If they're using it, it's obviously useful. So go take your generic ways and derogatory comments elsewhere.
@ZhaneTheGreat it is crap though dude... As in its literally in some cases rubbish, hence crap. Also i don't think they would be using the same stuff for 3.5, or any other game for the fact. It seems to me, that its a new thing that was introduced with the 4E paradigm. Previous to this most games were run with a DM screen, a tactical map/markers (sometimes), some dice, a pad of paper & a pencil. Its only now that 4E is out you see DM's walking around with the contents of a recycling bin.
@matthewlane No it is not. They wouldn't have it if they didn't use it, it was pointless, or was counterproductive. Just because you don't see the gaming merit behind some of these things doesn't mean it's a waste of space.
And by the way, I will restate that my DM uses almost as much stuff as this. It's all useful and speeds things along. And we play 3.5. I've never even cracked open a 4E book.
Get real, man. This amount of gear comes from a DM's desire to organize the way he runs HIS game.
Most tabletop RPGs (4E included) could be played with paper, pencil, a grid, and some markers.
Those same RPGs have other features that could be better visualized or communicated to players with various tools. The easiest example is initiative, and there are tons of creative ways to display that.
As far as your 4E bashing, get over it, man. Change is the ONLY constant.
@blueshoals i wasn't bashing 4E, i was presenting an observation that with the 4E paradigm came an increase in misc. "DM tools." Since 4E, other games are doing the same thing. Comparisions to previous editions were made by others & not by me.
I play all sorts of RPG's from WOD through to Eclipse Phase: 4E DnD is the first one where i have seen the apparent need for some many DM crutches. Seems to me that DM went from dungeon master to dungeon moderator, mastery having gone out the window.
By the way, just a tip: I dont know if you have a Cheesex vinal mat for tabletop games but if you do, the best type of marker to use is the expo dry erase, it dries perfectly and doesnt smudge and any type of eraser takes it off instantly without marking.
You helped me SOOOO much in the pace of my game being a new DM. Your system is simple and cheap ....being that was such a quick help . The gamers loved YOUR system. You are the man!!!! Am looking to more videos!!!!!!
Great tips for any DM, especially a DM who is headed to a different host's house for the session. When I head out to someone's place for D&D, I try very hard pack as light and efficiently as possible.
Great tips! Now I'm off to get pipe cleaners, bottle rings, and cheap poker chips. I look forward to hearing more about how format and print the hang tags. I also like to include a small retractable badge holder to use a line-of-sight measure. I started doing that back in my competitive DDM days, and it quickly answers player questions on whether or not the archer can see them. I'm now subscribed to this channel and am looking forward to the next installment.
Thank you from Germany I did a lot of this stuff already but the markers for ongoing DMG (example) are really handy!

@RoguelikeBoy Sweet Jesus more DM's should use the Hang-tag idea. Makes the game a lot simpler to follow when you can see an initiative order.

@matthewlane 4e edition doesn't tell you to use a bunch of extra stuff, it's just this man's personal preference.

Those initiative cards, and status markers are quite simply a brilliant idea! Very simple scheme, and it just uses paper.
I hope you continue this series, I'm planning my first game as DM, and these tips are much appreciated.
