I'm glad to learn, as a Japanese jazz fan, this video captures audience outside Japan, even though some of the comments critisize her performance. IMO, technique is of secondary to the musical mind, while I highly evaluate her skills as well though.
forgive me but violin is incongruous in the jazz idiom, in spie of her technical proficiency and allure; Jean=Luc Ponty is boring and outside of the intro this piece is rather pedestrian. Violin didn't work for John Handy and it doesn't work here.
you wouldnt know what would work in this context....forgive me, but jazz musicians are inferior in every way to classical musicians....no organization, no technique, no formal training......
@Browniesisgood what part of it? It doesn't really sound all that Bach-y to me if you know what I mean. do you know of any other performers playing this? (beside Ben Chan)
At least the start is from Bachs' Partita No. 2 for Violin in D minor, BWV 1004: V. Chaconne. Do not know the rest, since I haven't been bothered to watch the whole thing. But its definitely Chaconne at the start. And yes, I know what you mean, she is taking a new twist to it, which is why it doesn't sound like Bach :) Hillary Hahn plays Chaconne beautifully, look it up :)
@Browniesisgood Umm... yeah, no. This is definitely nothing like the Chaconne. Stylistically it's similar, but it's in C minor, not D minor. Also, aside from the brief bariolage section she does (which Bach certainly doesn't have a patent on), I hear no quoting of the Chaconne or any other Bach piece for that matter. The intro is a unique composition and isn't "from" anything.
Qualifications: I'm a violin performance major and have played the Chaconne.
@Browniesisgood There's only one Chaconne in D minor from Bach's 2nd Partita, BWV 1004. What I meant when I said C minor is that this piece is in C minor, Chaconne is in D minor.
@Aerich711 Don't bother with him. He made a mistake and was unwilling to admit it, even after outstanding evidence against his unwarranted claim was presented (by you). You pinned him down, and he refused to accept that.

all that beauty, the fruit of such hard work -- truly an unfathomable accomplishment, for all but 365,000 views... what is wrong with this human race?
I've been listening to Jean Luc Ponty for 40 years so I can appreciate good jazz string playing !! She is fantastic ! Incredible feeling and expression ......soul deluxe .
@hieronomy I agree, Jean Luc Ponty is great jazzy violin music. Best I've heard, but his songs tend to go to some type of experimental jazz, this song stays more on the normal jazz you would hear. Its got that nice rhythm or I should say, "taste" of jazz. Ponty's song have that as well, but as I said, he plays more of an experimental jazz, he tends to play around with notes making epic sounds, but I must say, this is a really jazzy string song! Would love to hear a CD of music like this...
@davidstighansen: Um, I'm not sure why you said Narcissist! at me.I'm hoping you were joking...excuse me if I don't get the pun.I commented that this young lady may be a violinist-but it appears she is playing a viola.I played violin many years growing up,so I can give myself credit for at least knowing the difference between these two beautiful instruments. This is a great piece by a fabulous musician and group-if having appreciation for that makes me a "Narcissist",then more power to me.
she's really good! the performance gives a bright, warm morning effect. it makes me smile. it looks as though they really are having a great fun just playing.
all these people commenting about her looks must be a bunch of old farts...she's an aging, mildly pretty female....nothing special. maybe that's not something you normally see in the classical world? o.O i don't get it.
@fujikokun She has class and she is asian. Of course she's not in her twenties, but her talent also adds to her charm. And honestly I don't know how aging she is but with make up she looks perfect to me, sorry I'm biased towards asiatic females.
what a beautiful wiolinist. This group is amazing and I can't watch without smiling and wishing I was up there with them all replacing that bassist (because that's what I play). I would definitely wish it. A beautiful violin solo too.
Watching this video makes me automatically smile. They're having so much fun! I love it when the violinist starts to dance around during the piano solo.. :D
Stephane Grappelli would have loved this, and would have enjoyed playing it himself. If you haven't yet heard his recordings, you must. Unfortunately Stephane is deceased. sanjosemike
my favorite song from the heavens y can only dream to play this song or feel as confident as her just dancing to her own music. they say that she makes it look easy bun in actuality it's really difficult song , but you must give credit to the other musicians besides them doing a beautiful job they really set the mood for the song.
@bambee The violin doesn't sound wierd. The sound she's making comes from how she's using her bow, and the fiber type used in her bow strings... Any violin could have many different sounds based on playing style and bowstring consistency
Playing instruments is really hard , but I love how she has fun with it. She doesn't even show that she's nervous. @123vidaljc, I don't understand why you would say that about someone so talented. I want to see if you have balls to get up there to play like that. Oh wait, too bad you can't play. Looking at something looks easy, but once you actually try, you would take back all the things you say. Everything is hard... It looks so easy for others is because they practice for hours and hours.
@legman36 - haha that's too bad, I think it's her face that's her most gorgeous feature, not that I disagree with you on her legs! I am rather biased towards Japanese girls though ;)

Due to the violin's excellent range, there is no need for another instrument to play higher than it.
Add in artificial harmonics, and you can extend it way passed the flute.
