Wow, that is so amazing and thrilling and scary!!! I love this to bits keep more of this coming, was that really all shot in Australia (tornadeos), it seems so unreal to be true... some wild rides u guys have been on, your got guts to do what u do, from photographer Robyn lee gippsland
Wizzard400 , oh yeah it all happens in melbourne and no where else. you're not fooling me . Melbourne is one of the LAST places I would move to, to see storms. The event you got 2 weeks ago,was a 1 in 50year event atleast. Great video by the way, I never get sick of watching it!!!!!!
and there will be great conflagrations, and the water shall turn to wormwood and the good earth to hellish insubstanstiality, and there will be plagues of locusts and a havoc upon the earth and all this man shall deserve for these are the latter days
I had interest in weather for 19 years and been in hailstorms for 19 years and I had never seen hail larger than baseballs to almost the size of potatoes. The largest hailstone I had seen was the size of pennies in January of 2009. hailstone size can tell you how powerful the storm is since hail are frozen raindrops being blown inside a storm by updrafts collecting and freezing water in layers. The bigger the hailstone the powerful the updrafts were and the more powerful the storm is.
Tornados are uncommon in Australia but they do occur every now and then, most of the tornados that have been recorded in Australia have happened in south east Queensland and north east New South Wales.
But they can happen pretty much anywhere in Australia, all the states and territories (except for Tasmania and ACT) have recorded Tornados.
I can't wait for summer! (which would be winter in Austrailia, lol!). We don't get big tornadoes on the East Coast of Canada, but we do get water spouts over the ocean. I love thunderstorms...but I have never seen hail that big!!!
Thanks for that - I was likely too much in shock to scream and yell. Nevertheless, I don't normally do that as it wrecks audio! At least this time I remained calm! Not sure about the cloud top heights.
Very nice! You managed to get it inside and out. Those were some spectacular supercells. Do you know what the cloudtop heights were on those? And the best part? You didnt spend the whole time screaming and yellin like a famous chaser here in the US that shall remain nameless. I turn the volume down on his. Excellent job!
Yes quite spectacular and lucky as well! I do most of my storm chasing in New South Wales and perhaps southern Queensland sometimes. This was one out of the blue!
Wow, I did not know we had tornados in Australia either but heard just now on the news that there was one today in South Australia. This now adds to the list of record temperatures this summer, devastating bushfires some of which are still burning an earthquake in the south of the country. The sth and east of Australia has been in drought for the last ten years. The north is currently has floods and they just had a cyclone. The global weather is becoming more intense.
hail and Tornados hit lismore and surrounding areas in 2007. i can tell you both storms were truely something amazing also look up the hailstorm that hit brisbane on 16/11/2008 now that was a truely australian storm!
You witnessed the tornado? Can you show me the video please? That is the other tornado video I have in the collection which since you have commented on!
The hail in the video here does vary - some are giants!
no i didn't see the tornado but a few of my friends did. i was there for the storms though. all of them the hail one which ripped apart lismore and surrounding areas. i was in goonellabah at the time of the tornado one so i didn't see it but a few people i know live right where it hit and they saw it. but i don't think anyone got footage sry. and i was in chermside(sry spelling) in brisbane when that huge storm hit up there on the 16th nov 2008. one guy died near where i was.
and we stoped people from leaving. we wouldn't let them go out. mind you noone dared! and the hail was tiny (like 1-2cm) where we were but still hail is hail. and hail can kill.
You may have got hail comparable to some fo the videos - not all I can assure you! The hail approached 10cm in 3 of the storms! Major damage occurred on my vehicle!
he was taking pictures of the storm water in the drains with his mate and both of them were washed away by it. the other guy survived. that storm was big, all of them were. i have video of the storm with huge hail from a few days ago (30/12/08) which i'm trying to edit then i'll upload it & some pics of the aftermath my neighbour and i took. luckly nothing i or my family owns was damaged (all safely undercover) well except the roofs - a little dinted. but my neighbour needs new skylights etc.
i'm not really surprised that those guys were washed away i was on a rooftop shealterd by a doorway that lead into the shopping centre below and the wind was comming from behind i could look out and all you could see was a wall of water! we helped 4 families into vechles trying to stop then getting too wet but it was useless after standing in the water for 1second you were drenched. my sis and i loaded groceries etc while parents loaded themselves and the kids. then the hail came.
as to hail size i'll show you the photos when their uploaded but i measured some of it just now (it in the freezer) and most of the smaller bits are 3-4cm but the larger bits are 6cm-7cm and up to 8cm
Starting things off with a bang, aren't you? WOW that was a close CG! The hail, the tornadoes...and the crackin' good lightning starting at 4:13 had me jumping! (Wouldn't be standing near powerlines, though. Enough electricity in the skies to fry ya!) Fantastic captures, adding to "StormChase" playlist, thank you, Jimmy!
Cheers for the link, Jimmy. Are there any Aussie tornadoes on here? :D Amazing footage guys! So nice to hear the accent, too. Those hailstones were massive :O

Where do you do most of your chasing? I am really interested in people who storm chase outside of the US.
