They both aren't incredibly fast, but they can control the DB's with their quick and perfected route running. I do believe Rice had better hands, and was a better receiver overall. Niner FB every Sunday. I saw JR give some of the best down field blocks any WR ever made. I bet if asked / polled RB's that played with JR will say he was also the one of the best blocking WR of all time. It was the Bill Walsh system. Run every route like the balls coming to you, and block your ass off on every running play. Started seeing it with Freddie Solomon Dwight clark then John Taylor and JR . Knocking DB's around on running plays. DB's were not used to that on an every down basis. 9ers

If jerry rice was 5'1" 100lbs and ran a 6sec forty he would have made it in the NFL? Size and speed definitely DO matter, look at Randy Moss. Fitzgerald has the all the skill, toughness and work ethic that Rice did PLUS he's bigger and faster. He dominated in an era when corners were able to harass receivers past 5 yards. There is a 5 year wait period after a guy retires to induct them into the HOF. They should just waive that rule for certain players. Rice was so damn good he should been inducted into the HOF while still playing. At some point its obvious that a person is a HOFer so once you reach that point then the question is, is this person 1st ballot. Once you know the person is 1st ballot then just induct even if they still active. Rice shoulda went in the day he turned in the retirement papers.

there r lots of people that did stuff better than rice but nobody ran routes or worked harder or had better hands. at the same time in his career rice had 79 td to fitz 54td. rice 7866 yds to fitz 6680. rice had 2 rings fitz has 0. shoot moss is better than fitz. even t.o when he's on a decent team is better than fitz. u can be the best athlete in the world but if u don't perform on the field than it doesnt matter. rice performed and won championships cause of it. fitz has nothing. jackass

@TheGrahams That has nothing to do with it. Jerry Rice is just the best receiver ever. You can tell that just by watching him, or by looking at his stats for that matter. Dont et me wrong Larry Fitzgerald is a pimp, hes a great receiver, but not as good as Rice, but you never know, lets see how he does later in his career.

If jerry rice was 5'1" 100lbs and ran a 6sec forty he would have made it in the NFL? Size and speed definitely DO matter, look at Randy Moss. Fitzgerald has the all the skill, toughness and work ethic that Rice did PLUS he's bigger and faster. It just took him a couple years to get his #'s because he was on a HORRIBLE team until Warner came along. Rice was drafted by the superbowl champion 49ers and the Vikes were a playoff team before Moss got drafted by them.

relative to the fact that Larry Fitzgerald ran a 4.5sec 40 time, opposed to Jerry Rice's 4.6sec 40 time. Not significantly better. Hence straight line speed isn't as much a factor as game speed. Which both have. 40 times can be misleading.

4.6 his sophomore year in college, reportedly 4,71 when he went fo the draft. Yes, 40 times don't really matter all that much when it comes down to it, unless you catch the ball behind the coverage and are trying to run away ;-)

The 40-time is the most overrated aspect of the combine. Look at how far Marques Colston fell, because he was deemed "slow". The shuttle drill interests me more, as I can judge how quickly someone can change direction. Players like Desean Jackson and Percy Harvin would blow through both drills with ease.

I'm in the middle of reading jerry's autobiography, and it's really good, you guys need to read it. made him my hero.
But jerry rice ran a 4.6 40, and that's slow for a reciever, but he had football speed which is totally different. the speed you have to cut and make the plays. he wasn't lieing when he said he worked the hardest either. He we never a showboat, he only did one endzone dance in his career. and didn't like it. And worked hours after practice perfecting routes

You are seriously calling him overrated because of one play? The guy is overall a very smart player...didn't have great speed or strength, but amazing route running and awareness. He dominated in an era when corners were able to harass receivers past 5 yards. If you don't think that matters, see the NFC Championship of the Eagles vs Panthers...those Eagles receivers couldn't do squat against the Panther corners. Oh and Rice has the stats to back his game up.

There is a 5 year wait period after a guy retires to induct them into the HOF. They should just waive that rule for certain players. Rice was so damn good he should been inducted into the HOF while still playing. At some point its obvious that a person is a HOFer so once you reach that point then the question is, is this person 1st ballot. Once you know the person is 1st ballot then just induct even if they still active. Rice shoulda went in the day he turned in the retirement papers.
