The police really seem to give me and my friends a go when we are questioned about something. They innapropriatly swear and innapropriatly threaten us and we don't even threaten or swear at them. If anyone is here is the bad group of people its the police.
I'm 14, to be honest from what I seen of the News statements I though most of them were true except the one about knife crime. I live in the Scottish Borders
I completely agree i live in a village and whenever i smile or say good morning to someone walking by they will frown at me and start to speed up with walking not all teenagers are bad and i know that a minority of teenagers to drugs and carry knives but i want to smile at someone walking by and they will just simply smile back i mean shop keepers will shout at me and my friends for walking in a shop what is the world coming to? thank you for standing up for us :)
I lived in America for a year and when I came back here it was the beggining of the 'hoodie hunt' in the press. Because I had relaxed dress sense like my American friends I was looked at like a piece of dirt by people in the street. Security guards would eye me up and I became afraid to go to the shops. Im 26 now but I am still very insecure because of the experience. Iv never been in a gang but I feel sympathy with those young people who feel so rejected and unwanted that they turn to crime.
Really powerful and thought provoking video. It makes a refreshing change to see a positive portrayal of young adults, rather than the endless stream of blame and condemnation from the mainstream media. Continue the brave and worthwhile efforts in the work you do.
i didnt think i was so bothered by this but when i saw those quotes i was so angry. what i hate about schools is that we had a perfect form but at the end of the first year we had a 'bad' kid moved into our form and the majority of the teachers attention went to him, he would walk in late miss would say sit down your late, someone else would walk in and they would get a right shouting. Things like this made people want to be bad. the attention shouldnt be on the bad it should be on the good
Agreed. As a teenager, there is nothing more upsetting than seeing people who are terrified of my friends and I, simply because of the bad press we get.
If I wasn't already working towards 4 a-levels, offering free IT consultancy and support to local charities, running websites for 3 youth groups and living 20 miles from the nearest major river or coastal area I would love to join the RNLI. It is something I've always wanted to do.
Young people do get a bad deal when it comes to the media and people should be more understanding that most youths are not bad people.
However understanding comes both ways. It is simply fact that large groups of teens hanging around the town center or a street in hoodies is intimidating and worrying for some, especially the older generation.
The drink isse is the biggest problem. If we talked binge drinking there would be far less violence and concern about anti social behaviour.
"It is simply fact that large groups of teens hanging around the town center or a street in hoodies is intimidating and worrying for some, especially the older generation."
well the should stop being so fucking ignorant. humans are social creatures, its natural for us to be in groups, just because people are in groups doesnt mean there going to attack people, wether the group is made up of 15-25 year olds, or 45-55 year olds or 75-85 year olds
They are not being ignorant, it is also human nature to be afraid and large groups of young people can appear tthreatening even when its innocent.
It is not those peoples fault they feel that way, its the fault of the government for not coming down hard on the minority of young people who do cause trouble.
Well large groups of any age groups will concern some at certain times, but there are more examples of young groups attacking people than a large group of 60 year olds.
You people are amazing i have tonnes of respect for you,
I am 14 and okay, not all teenagers save lives, BUT not all teenagers take lives either, we dont steal things or shout abuse at adults, that is the minority and i hate the fact that we all get put down just because some idiots are trying to get a "rep".
And yes i wear a hoody because i am cold, you dont need to cross the street or run away.
im 19 i wear hoodies i like to go out for a drink and have a good time but i never get into trouble and im sure there are many thousands out there my age and younger who do the same. i am also an RNLI lifeboat crewmember and i love it. tbh im not extremely bothered if we do get bad press reports and it is bad to see but i know that i do a good thing and i know its a minority who are in the wrong. i do very much appreciate what the RNLI are doing here.
I wear a hooded top and i am 13 people should really take a look at the good side as well as the bad. But you see 5 teenage rapings in the past year and countless adult raping same with murders. people should cut us slack. knife crime: yes it is a problem but its not as bad as the child abuse adults make!
Take louise fox she was abused through out her life!
that comment tries to take that away from us. Most teenagers do drink, there's nothing immoral about drinking if it doesn't lead to crime (which it doesn't for the most of us). And the drugs thing is silly, that's an ongoing ethical debate, don't stamp us all with the same PC brush. The world needs people who don't swallow what's expected of them and that's always been our forte.
Teenagers to get a bad stick. Knife crime IS higher amongst teens, violence IS higher amongst teens. this doesn't mean all or even most teens should be shunned, but it means that they will because the human mind categorizes things and rarely sees true complexity. It helps us work in the world but it also backfires, like this. I didn't really like the alcohol and drugs comment. "See? It's a fallacy that most teenagers drink and do drugs." Our one good stereotype is that we think for ourselves.
@kellogscornsnake No, just personal experience, I've seen a lot more of that kind of thing with my own eyes from teens than adults, but I guess you just have my word and you've no reason to take it. No, correlation doesn't mean dausation, but people will think so because that's the way the human mind works, it categorizes things. That's why we, just like black Americans a hundred years ago were singled out, why gays were hated, people are naturally dumb and the mind takes the easy way out.
Fair enough i give these guys credit for thinking that it isnt fair to be stereotyped because some knife wielding thug suddenly becomes the symbol of all other teenagers.
Thing is though were fighting a hopeless battle. Sure knife crime is absolutely unappropriate. No one wants to revolt against the select bunch of want-to-be thugs so to speak, its all down to a matter of trust, which is mythical in this age.
Although I've never personally had the finger pointed at me as a possible trouble causer because of my age, I can really appreciate this video, very good work, I only hope the message gets out.
All I hear on the news is "Hoodies", "Stabbings", "Gangs". Making it seem like that's all that goes on out there, while plenty of teens are out there doing amazing things.
Do people not understand that newspaper print "bad" press on teenagers because it makes "good" news/television.
This sounds crazy I know, but think if you were reading a book on a teenager. You would want action/suspence/emotion. This is what the press do to, so even though this is a good video I can't see why its needed. Think common sense.
I'm glad someone is speaking out about this. I dont see how it can possibly be classed as fair when people who have no where to go to hang out with friends that is specifically designed for their age get knocked down for being seen in public having fun. I know people who have been told to leave town centres for something as simple as picking a friend up to give them a hug. Thanks for this video guys. And I just want to say I respect you for your voluteer work aswell.
but its human instinct 2 stereotype others.. i dnt get 2 jus kno a certain person 2 judge him/her, i jus judge de way he/she looks, de way they talk, de way they present themselves ect.
its a bad thing i kno, but its de truth dat every1 stereotype others dan themselves.
other dan dat i agree wiv u de whole way! de media is soo wrong bout teens.. they exaggerated it too much!! 5 stars vid!! =]
I love this video. The news focuses too much on the negative and it's difficult enough as it is growing up anyway, there are some horrible things out there but it doesn't represent every teenager and young adult on the planet. I think everyone should see this, great video! xxx
I so agree with you, I am a teenager and I go to College, got 2 Qualifications already looking at a third at college let alone my GCSE's, Hoping to be a successful business man when I am older, so true of how the media portray us, It's so unfair. No wonder we don't enthuse on political, economic or social debates because we are constantly let down. cheers for this it the first major voice for supporting youth.
I am also a UKIP/Con teen so this is an act which I support because it is freedom.
this is totally inept; these teenagers do not represent the ENTIRE youth "culture", the fact about us is contradictory to "UUUEHH, NOT ALL PEOPLE WHO WEAR HOODIES ARE BAD PEOPLE", in places such as London, teenagers are just under-achievers and influenced by "ghetto" and this is the majority; these idiots need to realise that the "hoody" isn't what is the stereotype, it's the posture and facial expressions of people is what we use to percieve anyone, the simple thing is
This is great :) ... But yes people do carry knifes.. And i feel pressured sometimes and feel like i need to have a knife because others do, im not a thug :) i love my family and friends and i wanna make something of my life :) Im 16 so yer.
and we really do get alot of bad stuff from the media lol
The young people that I meet are just fab. They care for families and friends and are hardworking and want to succeed to become valuable members of society. Please don't judge a book by its cover.
This is a great video, thanks for doing it and good luck!
Too true. I often get looks from people. I used to wear a hoodie when I was younger(With Nirvana, Blink 182 etc...) but it's the fact I had a hoodie. EVen now at age 18 I've been looked at by a old person who thinks I'm gonna rob them or something.
Perception of young people is always an issue. Written around 2500 years ago:
"Children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. They are tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room, contradict their parents, chatter before company, cross their legs, & tyrannize their teachers." Remember perception of others, and I'll continue to change that of my peers.
u still dont understand anything? its so clear now. and people still wondering why why why this why that... apparently only a very very few people see what goes on in peoples mind. very few.
Young people are the future, and without them, the human race has no real function. There are those whose lives depend on selling newspapers, and one should ask... Who are these journalists who keep demonizing young people, the same "journalists" also delight in attacking immigrants, the unemployed, anyone except their own. In short, the owners, editors and journalists of our press all belittle the minorities of this nation... time to stop buying their wares! Boycott ALL newspapers.
I don't understand why they associate hoodies with bad teens. First, hoodies are really comfortable and warm. Second, lots of organizations hand out hoodies with their logo on it: FFA, Sport Teams, Clubs, Youth Groups, Stores, etc... Third, all age groups wear hoodies.
Why bash on teens? All age groups are guilty of crimes, and of great deeds.
Hi people, few words to say that this idea is awesome.
Im 19 and a volunteer member of Porthdinllaen lifeboat station(thats in North Wales) Iv been a member for 3 years now, I started at 16 and did the Duke of Edinbrough award with the crew. Im the baby of the crew. Everything the press has to say about youths are always negative, they dont see the good side to us youths.
Hey guys, just a quick hello to say i think this is a really good idea and that ive got every confidence it will succeed.
Im 18 and a volunteer RNLI crew member at Filey (Yorkshire). And in a couple of hourse Ill be going on excercise, On the crew with me are 3 other 18 year olds affectionatly called the "creche" by the older hands. You are right, the bad press we get is something undeserved.
Hopefully Ill get something posted up here soon from the whole group of us.
Well the media exists to sell itself, there's no money in us being good, honest responsible people. The general public apparently don't find that interesting enough. It's censorship, telling the people what they want to hear.
The corporate machine won't stop harrassing and criminalising us all but we have a voice, let us use it.
You know I don't know if you, in England say like that, but here in Ukraine we say "I have no words" and that means that that this is awesome. So I have no words. This video is very good job that you've done. This is a very good lesson for many people. Thank you very much.
I love this. We're all just getting so much Bad Press at the moment, and we don't deserve it. It's fantastic that a group of people are making that leap, and giving us better press and a better life.
We are going to prove that we can make a difference and that we are a generation worth thinking about. We're the ones who are going to have to solve the problems coming into play right now, so the least we deserve is a bit of respect.
I'm not in the minority depicted in the press. Not many are.
This made my day. Honestly, I see it all too much. We, as teenagers, are persecuted and discriminated against. If we were black, or brown, or yellow, there would be an outcry. National legislature would be passed over this! Instead...nothing. Silence. It's about time someone led a charge. Don't make any mistake about it, teenagers as a whole are pretty much who the media make them out to be. But not all of then. Which is why this is so important. Don't be forgotten, don't fade away. Good luck.
Could not agree with you more! A friend of mine was walking home from the cinema with some mates, laughing, when a guy goes up to them and sayid, 'Let's see you get an educatiopn lads!'.
Contrary to popular oppinion, they did not stab him or eat him, and where all genuinely shocked and upset by the experience (ironicaly, one of them ended up with 7 A*s, so THERE!).
P.S Is that a HP Lovecraft reference in your name?

Take Care Guys.

Until then, Peace Out!

Well the media exists to sell itself, there's no money in us being good, honest responsible people. The general public apparently don't find that interesting enough. It's censorship, telling the people what they want to hear.
The corporate machine won't stop harrassing and criminalising us all but we have a voice, let us use it.
Good work!

People often judge based on the most outlandish features...age over intellect, color over personality...It's not fair, and it hurts people.
And yes, Father Dagon. Big Lovecraft fan. Nice catch ^_^
