  • Grant Fuhr aka Coco. All the oilers called Fuhr coco as that was his nickname back in them days.

  • His save against the Islanders at the 2:47 mark was SICK!!! Knocked out of the crease, and he still made a diving stop.

  • lol, 2:50

  • Grant Fuhr: Canadian Hero!

  • 2:46 holy crap what a save!

  • Comment removed

  • Grant Fuhr on Edmonton...226-117-54 for a 60% winning percentage.

Grant Fuhr on the Leafs, LA, Buffalo, St Louis, and Calgary...187-192-60 for a 42%

How much did Fuhr rely on the talented Edmonton players in front of him?

  • @TheGoalieGuru Come on dude, normally you at least have thought out all the angles (see what i did there?) dont most goalies see a drop in their stats when they get older? he was about 28 i think when he left the evil empire. I feel that the other important point of his game was that he never wilt under pressure, that dude always seemed to make the big save late in the game.

  • @TheGoalieGuru you seem to be of two minds on stats, you explained that a goalies stats were indicitive primarily of the defensive scheme and talent ahead of them, so you bust on thomas because even though his % this year is for lack of better term F'n stupid, the bruins clean up in front of the net like nobody else, same with all Marty's shut outs and wins with the devils, but you bust on grants stats when he was backstopping a VERY aggressive 1 way team, and IMO honestly kinda got screwed up

  • @TheGoalieGuru by being born in the last old generation of goalies, no butterfly training even thought about

  • where did you find the footage from the Alumni game? I've searching all over the internet and never finding any alumni game at all. Great video by the way!

  • @1984Punx i have it on dvd... check hmv for it.... its got both games from that day

  • His stats were very average! Good thing his team scored a ton!

  • @TheGoalieGuru He didn't start playing till he got 5 or 6 goals scored on him, by then the Oilers already had 6 or 7.

  • @tjackson76 I have heard that excuse a million times. It's become a great myth!

He never won anything without some guys named Gretzky, Messier, Coffey, etc, etc, etc. in front of him. During his days that he won Cups his partner Andy Moog had the EXACT SAME STATS as he did. So i guess he didn't start playing until 5 or 6 and should be in the Hall too!

  • @TheGoalieGuru i wasn't making an excuse, i was making a joke....

  • @tjackson76 Sorry!

  • @tjackson76 thegoalieguru is an idiot.

  • @TheGoalieGuru nope. andy moog did not have the same stats. check the playoffs. fuhrs gaa dropped like a stone, if fuhr had played like he could, ie how he did when stuff was actually on the line, then the oilers would be blowing teams out by 4 not 2. this would have grown plenty of hate, then every team in the damn league is gunning for em even harder.

  • @GoJetsGo90 A) Hate to tell ya, there is FAR LESS scoring in playoff hockey. ALL goalies GAA's drop at playoff time. FAIL!

    B) Yes, athletes don't try sometimes. Sometimes he would even let goals in. Come on dude, do you hear yourself?

  • @TheGoalieGuru still the way she goes man, if your up by 3 with 3 minutes left you are not going to be the same animal you are when your tied or fighting to backstop your team to a win

  • @GoJetsGo90 which he never was really

  • @GoJetsGo90 So every close game the Oilers won was because of Fuhr and Moog who has a better career save percentage and better career goals against average couldn't have done that.

    Wow!

  • @TheGoalieGuru i have to post less, i feel like im spamming, no, Moog had stats, he did not get picked for canada cups, he did not get called the greatest netminder of all time by his team mates including Gretzky, having said that, what i imagine you may be fishing for, i never was even born when he was in his prime so for me this is all conjecture hear say, and the 2 and bits and pieces of games i have seen of 80s oilers, in a jets house the word oiler can get you grounded longer than an F bomb

  • @GoJetsGo90 Moog never got the full appreciation that Fuhr did. Moog was terrific and one of the best in the league but there is no doubt that Fuhr was a level above him.

  • @TheGoalieGuru his gaa was under 3 in the playoffs throughout his career what the hell are u talking about. Look at this stats int he playoffs most of the games in the finals were not even that high scoring. Yeah the regular season was but when it came playoff time alot of games were tight.

Grant Fuhr played in the most wide open era in nhl history on the most wide open team in nhl history. Hell roys gaa in his rookie year was 3.65 and his was on the canadiens.

  • @raj2007ca Why did Fuhr suck when he left Edmonton?

  • @TheGoalieGuru he helped oilers win 4 cups in 5 years. 2 canada cups in 1984 and 1987 and 6 time all star. He was awesome on the leafs for a year and potvin came in and they traded fuhr for andreychuk. He didnt play his best hockey with buffalo but still helped the sabres past the first round of the playoffs in 10 years. I thought he played pretty well on st. louis i dont think he suked at all he was one of the elite goalies in the league for a few years with the blues.

  • @raj2007ca Elite goalie on St Louis?

In 1995/96 he was 21st in save percentage, 18th in goals against average.

In 1996/97 he was 32nd in save percentage and 21st in goals against average.

In 1997/98 Fuhr was 44th in save percentage and 27th in GAA

In 1998/99 he was 50th in save percentage and 20th in GAA

    Elite? No!

  • @TheGoalieGuru lol cuz he did the butterfly in one clip all of a sudden hes a butterfly goalie so u dont buy that myth. Look at how he played in edmonton to his style in st louis u dont think there was a change at all lol. He had to adapt to the modern nhl or he wouldnt be able to play as a starting goalie.

If fuhr came up in the montreal leagues like roy and broduer and had the same training they did with his reflexes and athelticism he would of been the greatest goaltender ever

  • @TheGoalieGuru About his post season success after his days wih edmonton. Um every team he lost to in post season after edmonton all went on too win the stanly cup. He lost to montreal when he was on buffalo and on st louis he lost to detroit twice and once to the dallas starts and all those teams went on to wn the stanly cup that same year. Thats not too shabby at all.

His best chance was in 96 when he was stoning the leafs and he was kyproesized

  • @raj2007ca Not Shabby, just average! Not a star. His backup who filled in against the Leafs when he was Kyproesized, Casey, did just as well and had similar stats that Fuhr had in 97/98.

More proof he was average and no better than his backups!!!

    Give up yet?

  • @TheGoalieGuru lol ur comparing jon casys stats with grant fuhrs a year later lol. You have no idea what your talking about. If fuhr played against detroit that year in 96 instead of casey hands down the blues win that series and maybe he leads them to the stanley cup. Mike keenan said it himself jon casy is no grant fuhr if we had grant in net we would of won, the same as wayne gretzky.

  • @raj2007ca How many stanley cups did wayne gretzky win when he left edmonton. Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm 0 if u say fuhr never won anything when he left edmonton well neither did some other guys either including wayne gretzky so whats your argument now

  • I guess grant fuhr back stopping edmonton to 4 stanley cups he was a 6 time all star and represented canada in 2 canada cups as well both championships i guess the nhl were all fooled because grant fuhr was overrated and thats why he was always picked over everyone else. Yeah the other gm`s and players and coaches at that time were all fooled becuase he was so overrated

  • @raj2007ca Oh I 'm not comparing him. IT'S NOT ME! The stats are comparing them! The stats prove it!!! It's not an opinion. The stats are real.

  • @TheGoalieGuru Also remember fuhr was a goalie who relied on his reflexes and athelticism. When the game was changiing with the likes of the new goaltending system and the butterfly it was a hard transition for him because he was never taught that like the goalies who were coming up back then. Roy started the transition then everyone else. Fuhr came into the league in 81 so he had a harder time adapting to the new style of play thats why he came back strong with the blues cuz he was adapting

  • @raj2007ca Reflexes and athleticism? If you make a statement like that you must have proof. There is no proof that Fuhr was more athletic and had better reflex than other NHL goalies.

I think you are being fooled by his FAKE glove saves that he exaggerated by throwing his glove into the air and falling on his butt!

Go ahead. Try and prove to me he was faster and was a better athlete.

How do you explain your theory about the "new system" when Moog who had better stats, was OLDER than Fuhr!

  • @raj2007ca Also (please see my other comment about your reflex comment) what do you think of the BUTTERFLY SAVE that Fuhr makes at the 0:54 mark of the video above!

Your theory is now out the window!

    No offence.

  • @TheGoalieGuru his defense was below avg as well. About ur comments on andy moog yeah they had similar stats because the team tightened up when moog was in net then fuhr. When fuhr was in net the oilers played tougher teams as well. I grew up watching the oilers in the 80`s ask any oilers fan and they will tell u the same thing. Fuhr was the guy in the playoffs because he was better.

Only thing moog ever did was spilt duties in the reg season with fuhr and cost fuhr some records

  • @raj2007ca His defense was below average? Right there tells me you have no idea! Andy Moog was 23 and 9 in the playoffs as an Oiler. Moog has a better career winning percentage than Fuhr!

I love the "team tightened up" crap. Why did the Oilers score the same amount of goals with Moog in net? If they were playing more defensive why the same goals for? Tougher teams? So Fuhr always beat the weaker teams? Moog played half the games. How many tough teams do you think there was?

    I'm an Oiler fan!

  • @TheGoalieGuru

Well, true but the other five guys on his side were always down in the other team's end. He stonewalled so many breakaways it was amazing.

Oilers were always looking for spectacular breakouts. Messier dropped so many bombs in his own end it wasn't funny.

It's really amusing to hear people downplay his abilities now. At the time (Oiler's glory days), there was universal acknowledgement of how good he was. Big thing was, he was there when they needed him.

  • @sampammer You have proof of all these breakaways? I don't remember that at all. Messier dropped more bombs than weaker players on weaker teams?

It's really amazing to hear people talk about all these myths of breakaways now. I love how people make the excuse when I tell them that Moog had as good as stats as Fuhr but the somehow Moog didn't make the "big save" like Fuhr did.

Where are these stats and videos of these so called "big saves"?

  • @TheGoalieGuru er. . . . I sat in the stands and watched. I'm not a stats guy and I won't try to argue that. Don't have access to the numbers and they don't mean much by themselves anyways.

BTW: I did not say Moog never made big saves. Moog was great, no question, but Fuhr was the obvious choice to keep. Guess you had to be there.

Back around 1980, Mess was a big source of fan frustration. He was terrible in the Oiler zone. Good thing Sather didn't listen to the nay sayers.

  • @sampammer So do you think that the Oilers were just lucky enough to have two of the better goalies in the league?

Do you think the odds are better that the Oilers team made them look good or did Moog and Fuhr make the Oilers look good? Oh, then there is Ranford. Was he also a great goalie?

Please keep in mind after Edmonton in the 80's, these three goalies won nothing and had very AVERAGE careers at their PRIME AGES.

    Peace!

  • @TheGoalieGuru For the time they with the Oil, Fuhr and Moog were certainly top 10 goalies and probably top 5 in the NHL. You can argue numbers all you want but fact was that these guys fit very well in the Oiler team puzzle. Ranford was excellent at the right time.

You know hockey is a team game and you take almost any player from those teams and they don't succeed the same way elsewhere.

You see that today when UFAs go to greener pastures and look positively ordinary.

  • @sampammer Example: In 1983-84 when they first won the Cup Moog was 20th in goals against average and tied for 15th in save percentage, and Fuhr was 23rd in goals against average and 13th in save percentage.

Explain to me what "fit" means. Neither one would have fit on the last place team? Or the last place goalies wouldn't have fit with Gretzky and company?

Fun debate by the way, Thanks!

  • His timeline kind of parallels my minor hockey timeline in net. I was in Peewee (12-13 yrs) when he won the Cup in '88, so that was the first time I really saw him, and he was the coolest goalie I'd ever seen at the time cuz his style was so unique. By the time I was 16-17 and starting to get out of hockey,he was my idol. Greatest glove hand of all-time.

  • Grant started with no.1 because Eddie Mio was their goalie and was wearing it. When Mio retired, he made the switch.

  • Textbook glove save! Sweeping motion follows the puck!

  • Ha ha, yeah, it did. Some kid in school told me he switched numbers and I didn't believe him. When I actually saw him wearing 31, I was all :O

  • Greatest Glove Hand in the West!

  • I'd buy that for a 8-ball!

  • When did he go from number 1 to 31?

  • @texds Partway through his rookie season in Edmonton ('81-'82 season). Will never forget because I bought myself a #1 Fuhr jersey, just before he switched over to #31.

I was 12 years old and it was over 3 month's allowance that I saved.

  • @gablackburn That must of sucked lol

  • Does anyone know when Fuhr stopped wearing the old-style fibreglass mask?

  • @tjackson76 Will do man. I'll check that out.

  • Classic Leafs save @ 2:36.

  • This guy was amazing. Even when he let one in, he was still spectacular.

  • THANK YOU for posting this vid for Fuhr...not enough exposure like many of the goalies who played for Edmonton during the Cup years...Moog like Fuhr was also a great starting goaltender on other teams...it was kinda of surreal when Fuhr and Moog played against each other in the 88 finals

  • One of the greatest gloves in nhl history

  • lets see billy won 4 cups in a row. grant only won 3 moog and ranford won other 2. smit won connsmythe by totally shutting down your team 6 goals in 4 games. won 82 vezina, 1983 jennings 1978 all star game mvp. did grant win 19 straight playoof series? uh no that would be smitty the greatest clutch goalie of all time. and smitty wasnt a coke head either.lol OWNED

  • @skyroe2 don't forget, he was also the first goalie to be credited with scoring a goal.

  • @tjbillyjoebob oh yeah. and was first goalie to wear colored equipment. come to think of it fuhr totally ripped off smiths color scheme

  • @skyroe2 grant fuhr won 5 cups he was the starter for 4 and billy ranford won the cup in 1990 when fuhr was injured for the playoffs, get it right man.

Fuhr 5 cups starter for 4 and 2 canada cups an all star mvp. Hands down fuhr over smith any day of the week

  • @raj2007ca you dont know anything do you?lol get your facts straight fuhr got hurt in game 2 of 84 final. andy moog won the last 3 games. `OWNED

  • @skyroe2 Fuhr was a far better goalie than Billy Smith.

  • @skyroe2 lol so moog won the cup in 84 when fuhr played majority of the playoff games and won majority of the playoff games lol yeah um ok

  • @skyroe2 lol so moog won the cup in 84 when fuhr played majority of the playoff games and won majority of the playoff games lol yeah um ok um how many canada cups did billy smith win oh yeah right he wasnt even selected

  • @raj2007ca canada cups? who gives a shit about canada cups.? lol and those selections back then were so biased towards the oilers. and smith was at tail end of his carear back then. the only thing grant fuhr was better at then billy smith was snorting lines of coke. now read this and go back to jerking off to pictures of fuhr in old oiler year books. OWNED AGAIN!!!!

  • @raj2007ca here your next message UM UM UM UM UM. whats with all the UMS? is that what you say with a cock in your mouth.? OWNED

  • he was good. but not as good as billy smith

  • @skyroe2 lol he was better then billy smith out side the islanders what did smith ever do. Fuhr also won 2 canada cups to what is equivalent to the olympics now and he had some success outside the oilers such as the blues. Theres no comparison whatsoever fuhr all the way hands down

  • * Great video showing of the GREATEST guardian of net in history of sport. I appreciate this compilation, brings back memories to my days of growing up as a kid with hockey all around me. This guy made watching hockey fun. tended net like he was on fire. You never knew what to x-pect, he just reacted. . .got him in trouble sometimes but got him 5 cups as well. Thank you for the trip in retro-spect i wish there were more vids like this.

  • Outstanding video. Grant is my personal favourite goalie of all-time.

  • The greatest goalie to have ever graced the ice, a legend, and the fastest glove hand in the world.

  • He was very entertaining. None of this boring,cookie-cutter butterfly everytime crap. He made goaltending an art.

  • About time there is a Fuhrsy tribute video. Right on man. Nice vid. Solid quality. Not sure about the music but hey.......whatever. Nice job

  • O my O My!! Wow what memories! Wonderful tribute to the greatest goalie to ever play hockey. Unfortunately times have changed but I had to write something here as I am one that believes Fuhr was the best. thank you for keeping me in retro-spect if only for 3 1/2 minutes.

  • keep the goalie videos coming!

  • awesome video!

  • Awesome video, good job.

I think it's funny to see how much NHL goaltending has developed. From the days where goalies would use their glove and the half-butterfly almost all the time, to today where the butterfly and standup is the most popular. What will NHL be like in 25 years? ;-)

  • Awesome!
