I imagine much more refined versions of these rays, penguins, & other similar Festo products are already in use in military and security operations. You could insert a depth charge or bomb in one of these things and program it to "swim" next to a ship or submarine and explode. Or insert miniature cameras and use for underwater spying. If this sort of "demo" technology is on YouTube for the public to see you can be sure the real technology is 10-20 years ahead of this and already in use...

the great thing is that if you combine this with the new foto-voltaic skin (not exactly sure on the name) some other people are working on you can really get some great results...
the reason it's not moving as smoothly/fast as a real ray might be because the "wings" can't undulate. they move as one piece. I think the next step will be to put multiple skeletal beams in the wings to undulate the wing instead of just flap it. Still impressive though.
I just had the best idea EVER for how to use this thing.
What if you set up sender and reciever systems from these Aqua_rays and some water-proof earpieces and headed undersea tours and used these gives to get constant, low impact information about all sorts of environment.
Talking of Cyberdine there was actually an amputee on the news a few days ago with an arm that looked similar to the terminators. It was scary to think as a child of the 80's would see such a thing in real life.
If you could design a power-generating system for it that was self-sufficient in some sense, say, solar, you could make something that could, say, map the oceans, track species of fish, all as the least obtrusive object in the environment as possible. Heck, someone swimming wouldn't be able to tell at a distance between these bionic robots and the real thing. You would think the environmentalist crowd would be all over this technology.
They've used puppet animals in the presence of other animals before, and some can, some can't tell the difference. When they raise certain species of birds in captivity, for instance, they feed them with glove-puppets that look like a grown up bird, so they don't get confused as to what they are and who their mother is.
this is amaizing... imagine if you colud combine this with a minisub... i mean make-it powerfull enough to carry 2 men and oxigen... sci-fi would come to life...

this model doesn't seem to be able to control its direction. Needs more degrees of articulation in the wings.

looks like a good way to smuggle drugs. tell it where you want it to go, then toss it in the water. it needs some solar power though.
overtoke 2 years ago 2
And drug cartels have the money to develop it as well.

possible negative side effect: shark on drugs..not sure if i want to see that.still a good idea though

It could have generators that are powered by the ocean's current. Solar panels may not work very well when you're a few feet under water.

I wonder what would happen if you mixed one of these in with a school of rays and tried to see if a person could tell the difference....

or even better, if the other rays could :P

@KoyotoShadow Once you remove the Festo logo, of course.
layn333productions 11 months ago
@layn333productions True. Though they had a story today of a lady sunbathing on a boat when a 300 lb ray leaped out of the water and on top of her.
KoyotoShadow 11 months ago
@KoyotoShadow wonder if the rays would notice? This is some amazing tech!
TheCitizenx74 11 months ago
@TheCitizenx74 I kind of doubt they'd be able to notice either. They'd probably just think it another unusual ray that's with them.

@KoyotoShadow Yep the one labeled festo is not real
