How could a women in her late 40's in the 1880's get paid for such things. They had to be in horrible shape.

Indeed, they where. Some were even missing teeth. However, some like Marry Kelly (who was 25) looked ok *if they didn't drink a lot*
They mostly got their money from people within that area, or drunk dudes who wanted sex. THAT'S how they got paid.

Yeah, they were passersby. A couple of rude butthead boys who thought they were funny. They were old enough to behave better, but rather chose to behave like teenagers.
Embarrassingly (and unfortunately predictably), I think they were Americans.
