  • a great man xx

  • 5.07 : "look like a 'Cretan' " Obviously anticipating his role in Guns from Navarone .... ;-) Clealry, the tension between Director and Lead Actor help made this the great film it is ....

  • william wylers anti western

  • Well, Mr Peck, that all may be true, but I believe that TBC is one of the greatest Westerns. If this quality of film can be made with a faulty script, and without a strong and brilliant overall producer, that makes your achievement even more impressive. RIP to all the exceptional people who made this film

  • atticus :)

  • @cutie3piexoxo Yes Atticus Finch - the lawyer hero in 'To kill a mocking bird'.In my opinion Greg's greatest role. Such a moving film with an excellent twist at the end. I never get tired of it.

  • @gillwilkinsongw me too!

  • @RichardElden Gregory Peck was a highly respected man, whilst you are a foul mouthed one, whose contribution to anything worthwhile,I suspect,is ZERO.

Pecks films will be watched long after you have gone. What will the World remember of you,I wonder?

    Don't answer,I already know.

  • @RichardElden I guess you didn't like it then?

No redeeming features at all? I wonder what type of film attracts you.

  • @RichardElden Your dead inside.

  • most interesting that peck and wyler knew, felt , whatever, that something was fairly wrong with script, a bad sign they had six writers that never could break the code: for me it was baker who was terrible and whiny, the fall back to the pretty canvas of the location which they relied on to take up the slack of the emptiness of the story, but it did have five or six great scenes, and should have ended with the hands just filing down from the canyon to witness the dead patriarchs

  • posted this elsewhere, kind of interesting that blanco canyon was used in Man of the West there it was called Lassoo

  • for westerns, for me, it was pretty bad: five or six nice scenes, but hardly even my top twenty. But then wyler was far from my favorite directors. The Moross score was like a suit wearing the model. Moross's for the Jayhawkers was more pounding and gripping, very much in the league of Elmer Bernsteins stuff, bang bang. Red River, my favorite, on the other hand is Tiomkin at his best, much more muted, not overpowering the film. Bickford was great as usual Ives, fine, and the restboring

  • The music score is very much influenced by Rachmaninov's second symphony and a touch of Bruckner 6 as well

  • "Willy, will you take out that scene, because I look like a..... what??" What word did Gregory mention at 5:07 ?

In spite of his malheur, I think this scene was absolutely brilliant because it showed perfectly the real persona of the character Gregory played.

Yes Jubalcalif, I agree with you: Jerome Moross music is so great, he was a musical genius. My family and I love his music so much, he wrote the Charlton Heston movie "The War Lord", absolutely great piece of music.

  • @Joylibelle "Because I look like a cretin, sitting there."

  • @mwoelfle , thanks!

  • I think the movie was brilliantly done as is. Though it may have seemed like a weak script at the time, and that the buckboard scene may have seemed to Greg to need retaking, I think it was just right. A "more brilliant producer" may have changed the whole dynamic of the movie. It demonstrated the difference in men and when a man "stands" he stands "out".

  • One of the very best films of all time

  • THANK YOU for posting this! "The Big Country" (despite its weak ending) is one of my all time fave Westerns. Gotta at least love that dynamite cast & wonderful use of the wide screen. And its got my FAVE movie score (Jerome Moross was a genius!). You've MADE my day & my weekend!

  • @JubalCalif I thought the ending was powerful--certainly not 'weak'.

  • @TheClam88

    Indeed.

  • @JubalCalif I agree with you, Jerome Moross was brilliant !!

  • my favorite western and my favorite actor

  • How cool - thanks for sharing!
