Try a flight simulator, I hate to say it but you are part of the problem, not the solution. Jesus did you even buy a trainer plane first? Why are you flying so far away, you have to circle the plane back before it out of sight. Why did you try to fly again the next day when you clearly arent competent as a pilot yet
@kenbouy : OMG, I remember when he flew this jet.... LOL... So Long ago! And look at him now, Flying Giant Scale Turbine Jets! Thanks for the viewing and comment!
@JetFlyyer : No, the one he is flying in this video was Version 1. For some reason they angled the wings down. 6months later they corrected it. So all these sold now, the wings are correct. Thanks for viewing and for the question.
my F-4E by exceed RC also had poor flight characteristics and it crashed on maiden and 2nd try. I have decided not to waste any more cash buying from BH or NP...
ohh you are really bold to put this video on Youtube. This plane is fast and worth buying another one. 2 more suggestion 1) is putting some silver or white balloon party strings tape on the exshauts ends. It help to see from far away. 2) Is the more spectators you have, the more likely you will crash. That just how it is.. lol lol. but for now FLY, CRASH, BUILD, FLY AGAIN. That's we all really learn.
@CrazyEnergy2 : Thanks for watching and commenting. I'd pass along your suggestions but this video is over a year old and Tinkerman now has his own channel and flys much larger, faster, and cooler jets than this small f4. Check out his channel at TinkerManRC
Man.I feel the pain. I have the blue angel version F4E. It had the same characteristics. These jets have bad elevator throws. I Crashed exactly like you. buy another kit. No one could ever match your hand launch lol.. Amazing save though. I agree, you need more sim. practice. I adjust my elevator, It's better than anybodies I bet, so write back and I'll send you a video of what I did. Mine has crazy elevator throw now. 60 deg. in both up & down throws. not that 15 deg. bull-Sh that comes stock.
You might want to look at those linkages to the elevator. A vid by nightflyer showed that the elevator when it is being pushed by the servo can bend the wire on a high torque movement. The servo might have moved but the deflection of the rod or linkage just buckled under the strain and caused you to not turn correctly. You might want to look into that, so you can actually fly the plane. It dones't really seem like you know how to fly all that well, so I would suggest a sim or more time on it
You crashed the second time because you pulled up elevator while having a lot of bank on, your wings were not level so by pulling up elevator you just made the turn tighter. When a plane is turning it will loose altitude, and the tighter the turn the more the plane will descend. To avoid crashing you should have rolled the wings level and then pulled up elevator. But we are always learning . Good Luck next time.
nope, the elevator setup from the factory totally sucks. I had something worse happen. I bought one, got it the day b4 xmas.
First flight...alen scew comes loose on nose gear and 3/4 throttle into a curb....broken wing and damages nosecone.
Ok. filed in a grove in the nosegear for the screw to catch and walla..
next "flight" IT gets up nicely and everythings cool. I did one full throttle pass and then climb into third turn and the elevator comes loose and toast...sucks! bad linkage.
dude.. get another one.. but also get a flight simulator.. you don't know how much to give it on the controls.. lol.. god.. i'm still laughing.. don't feel bad.. i did the exact same thing with my first jet.. lol.. it just reminds me of when i crashed mine 2 seconds after i got it.. i was nervous just like you.. but the thing is.. you gotta be patient and fly the simulator.. and do give it full throttle,, and get use to the controls before you fly again..
Mate same thing happened to me this weekend, i crashed it because i was too touchy on the controls. It happens to the best of us mate, so keep flying!
Also, if you are very nervous like you stated, your fingers will be very jumpy at the controls. Lastly, you probably did not have good elevator control before you crashed because you were at wide open throttle. The faster any plane moves, the slower you should be at the controls. Thats why the radios now have the "expo" function, to soften up the sticks around the center. Maybe you did not setup enough expo or you had too much. hope this helps you for future flights.
I watched the video carefully and this is what I have to point out.. First, I have one of these and they fly perfectly if you build it according to the manual so CG is not a problem. I have a CG balancer and the CG was good on this plane. What I saw in this video is the way you hold the radio transmitter is very very bad. You need to use your thumb and pointing (index) finger to hold and move around the controls. This way you have authoritative control of your plane.
I flew mine today. First time sense I got it about 2 months ago. lol It was such a rush, I was shaking the hole time, I can't believe it flys so fast. I almost lost it at first! I decided not to put my other battery in and call it good for the first flight lol!
One problem with most budget EDFs is they don't have rudder . Beside from few models ( EF2000, F-117 and Rafale ). Therefore it makes it hard in turns For next flight buy either of those 3 or any other model that comes with rudder.
I have no problem turning my non-rudder EDFs. Bank and Pull elevator. Not rocket science. Also, given that there are like 4 different manufacturers making models of those planes, not sure how your advice is helpful. You fail at giving advice, but succeed at being an idiot know-it-all.
i know exactly how that all feels. im trying to make the jump to edf's after "normal trainer type " planes. it aint easy at all. what i found tho is a healft dual rate set up so that once its up you can kill off a lot of the twitchy controls also slow it down. on my second flight i had been told all this and had the dual rates set. once it was up... pancaked and forgot it all. flew it at full rip and it kept getting further and further away till i lost orientation and smashed it. again.
He actually had dual rate and expo set up on this plane. Being his first EDF jet, it was simply too small and he tried to fly it like his bigger planes. It's simply a matter of get used to the fast small EDF and learning to bring throttle way back and keep it in close. He's getting there! In the meantime, I keep the camera rolling for any exciting crashes! Gotta have a 2009 Crash Video and I need content! LOL.
This plane is really for experienced EDF pilots. Its small, light and QUICK. Plus this plane has Very small elevators and movements. It was just a bad choice in First EDF plane choice for Tinkerman. I've seen this plane fly from other experienced EDF Pilots and they flew it nice but also said it required experience! Thanks!
Think I had the same F4. Found it a little underpowered, and even on the CG a little tail heavy, see that in the hand launch too. Too bad, nice looking model. 4cell one avilable, might be better flying. Keep it up though, EDFs are harder to fly than most planes, but make it worth it when they fly well
Exactly. We've actually tried to convince him to go a little bigger EDF. These small EDF's are so small that they are hard to see and they are very twitchy on the controls, even with Dual Rates and Expo. He's actually got this one to fly pretty well on his last flight but got carried away and let it go FAR out like his bigger planes and simply lost sight of what it was doing. Crash. Gut it. New Plane.
Sorry about your F35. I love mine! Just repaired elevator hinge for this weekend!
Its not really matter of the size of airplane. it is matter of the diameter of the wing. Try EF2000 or Rafale for next time. They perform great for beginners to EDF.
Everytime i go and fly the Cub and the old Aerobird I get butterflys in my stomach and start complaining about the wind being too much and those things, Good luck on the third attempt.
Hey Tinkerman, dont feel bad. Those little jets can be a handful. I cant wait to see your third try. Im sure you'll get it! I like the beginning of the video with your comment about being nervous nervous nervous. I totally get the diamond factor! I have it too everytime I fly, when I get a chance! Keep the faith fly brother! By the way, How long did it take to repair the plane? It looks like it is almost brand new! Awesome.
I know. Tim was bummed big time after the 1st crash. Then after we glued it back together and it looked half decent, he was ready for another go. We thought he had it. I havent flown this plane, but it looks like the elevator doesnt have enough throw to whip the plane into a tight side turn, so when he angled sideways and pulled elevator, instead of whipping around like hes used to, it gently pulled around and without correction, it just plowed the ground. Third attempt this next weekend.

Not this F-4. It's very quick and twitchy. It takes experience flying fast EDF jets to keep this off the ground.
A good First EDF is the Nitroplanes F-22 70mm EDF jet. The one with the Flag on it. Man it floats. Very Stable.

A heads up to Tim before his next attempt. When you throw an EDF - throw it HARD! You need to get it on step right away.
Never yank and bank an EDF - they lose too much air speed and can tip stall on you. Nice sweeping turns is what you want. :-)
Good luck. I glued my HC F-35 back together 5 times and finally gave up last weekend after pancaking it on launch once again....
