Porque los Espanoles son racistas...Espana es un pais muy pequeno pero grande en constructores de guitarras....no hay nada mas romantico que la guitarra clasica y la musica Latino Americana...
some student of mine once asked why there was only vals 3. & no.4 ....well i told them that the 1st and 2nd valts were lost... my 1st student laughed and said "he couldnt keep track off all the sh*t he wrote down??? WAT A FAG" and my second student started to cry. she says "if the third and forth were this good then i only wish to see the missing pages of the first 2 songs" well we can only imagine
Anyone who criticises Williams and labels him as a "robotic" player should watch this. Such expressive, yet controlled phrases. Personally, I prefer it when I plays closer to the metronome (especially for his baroque performances) but for south american playing this is perfect!
on the other hand perhaps segovia didn' have the musical personality required to make barrios's music shine. perhaps he ws only suitable for adapting existing musics.
FIRSTLY, "SUNMONSTER" thanks for putting up this clip. I was introduced to the music of Barrios, not - by a South American guitarist - but JW. Williams is very astute at reading 'classical guitar zeitgeists' (!) - and always picks the most tuneful composers & and compositions. He was/is on a 'winner' - with the music of Barrios, who is incredibly hard to play. Definitely not for beginners! -
Segovia did like Barrios's music it was strange for him, because Agustin was playing on with steel strings at the time and they didn't want to class him as a classical guitar player.
LOL his expression in 3:59 was quite hilarious. he was like suprised from all the emotional intensity he had from the piece and finally realized in the end that "oh shoot, it's over already?" haha. as always, very very inspiring music. great job JW
I've heard that Segovia once cancelled his concert when he heard that Barrios were about to play the same evening, in same town. Maybe Segovia were a little "afraid" of Barrios extraordinary technic :P
I so agree. I always saw John as brilliant technically, but lacking Julian Bream's interpretive brilliance, and then he pulls this out of the hat! He does everything right, playing the introduction as a Chopin waltz, but giving it a marching band feel which works. The solemn part sounds solemn, unlike most interpretations. He plays the cadenza slowly gradually building up speed to a blistering pace, whereas most, again, play it at a uniform speed.
IDK, it looks like when he went down for the transition it was intentional that it didnt last as long as the first, as his right hand didnt look irratated. I could be wrong.
Yeah I agree, Williams is very robotic compared to say Julian Bream. But I still think he played this piece very well, giving it a wide range of character.

@Muso8787 couldn't have put it better. John Williams plays this with such ease that he's enjoying himself.

Its strange that Segovia didn't like Barrios' music. We are lucky that Williams has made it more widely known out of Central America.
