  • i suffer from this too... its 4 AM now

    its ruining my life

  • I feel everything you are saying!!!!

  • I sleep late, but wake up ealry..hm I might Have it Idk.. But had dated someone with sleeping issues. Always help her out as staying up with her untile she went to bed.

  • I was diagnosed with this. It's so hard. I do not have any energy until at least 1pm. Do you think sleeping with the shades open will help our bodies recognize the daylight in the morning? Does melatonin work to "fix" us? :\

  • @hollybee43 I dont think it will i shut down in the day time. and it be bright as heck outside!

  • I haven't been diagnosed with this by a doctor or anything, but it's clear as the sky I have it. Sleeping at night is ridiculously hard, while sleeping in the day is literally effortless. And it's always been like this since I can remember. Funny thing, I still work a day-job. And even if I manage to move my schedule to sleep at night, you are STILL tired during the day, and full of energy at night. It's nuts. But there will be a way to make use of this I'm sure. Life is full of opportunity!

  • I'm doing laundry and dishes at night. I can't get myself to do anything during the day. like it takes all day to wake up and I'm really awake after 10 in the evening. I usually sleep from 3 or 4 at night till 1 or 2 in the afternoon.

  • Hey divinity. I didn't hear you mention anything about light therapy. I'm seriously thinking about ordering something called the Philips GoLite Blu Therapy Light. I've done a lot of research on this, and this thing seems like the only thing that may work. Lots of great reviews from DSPS sufferers on amazon. It's funny, in a lot of these DSPS videos here on YouTube I don't see anyone mentioning this device. It very well may be the cure. Although not for all. And that's the risk in buying it.

  • Your case sounds much more extreme than mine, but still, during our sleep we're both missing the mainstream world of business and commerce each day, so in a sense we're both suffering the same disability..I feel for you.

  • I have it. I thought it was laziness for about 15 years, but I never feel sleepy before 12AM, no matter how early I've gotten up. I could get 4 hours of sleep and wake up at 7AM, but I'll still be wide awake at 12AM and lucky if I get to sleep at 1AM. That's considered an early bedtime for me..and 3AM comes more naturally. Rising at noon is my natural cycle, and getting up at 7 to arrive somewhere at 8 is unimaginable in my eyes. That's like playing a piano concerto..

  • You've described my life almost exactly. It sucks doesn't it?

  • You've described my life almost exactly. It sucks doesn't it?

  • I've read in studies that part of the "problem" with people with DSPS is that we *aren't* sensitive to sunlight the way day people are, so it has no effect on our circadian rhythms. We are just hardwired to be awake at night.

Could you go out and socialize in the afternoon and evening before going to work so you're not so isolated? That's what I do. It works pretty well, since everyone is usually at work during the hours I sleep anyways. :)

  • I can relate to you perfectly. I can't get truly tired until at least 7 or 8 in the morning, sometimes even later. I have a hard time waking up before 5 PM and sometimes I'll even sleep in past sundown because I try to knock myself out with sleeping pills or Nyquil or whatever and wind up sleeping 10+ hours. Or I'll just say up all night and all day and mess myself up even further. I wish I could stop but it's so hard not to live like this. I'm 20 y/o and never had a job for this reason. :(

  • one more thing, does your dog have dsps too or are you waking him up?! meean! haha. jk. and dont worry, all you have to do is find a partner with dsps haha! no?!

  • This is a very good video considering your knowledge is abit underdeveloped, but no one can blame you, since you are sleep deprived n all!

  • Heh, I just can't stay away from this video - Overall, despite other people's occasional unpleasantness about the situation, being a night person is the one thing in my life that keeps me going. For the most part, everything else is either boring (washing clothes, grocery shopping etc.) or just a quick fix to pass the time (music, tv, reading etc.). It's definitely the one thing I'm stubbornly passionate about. As Iggy Pop once said , "I'm as stubborn as a mule and nobody breaks my rules".

  • I've had this problem since I was a baby. I got help with it up until I get into grade 5, then it all came back. My mom thought I was faking it and just wanted to stay home from school. It was difficult not having my mom believe there was something wrong with me, and when she finally took me to the doctor, he refused to give me a sleep aid or anything and all he told me was to go to bed early. It's not that easy when you're totally restless.

  • just wanted to properly say thanks for this video - it helps give me resolve when people are screaming at me to "just grow up" and be a day person.

  • I m a night person. To me life is a battle then I meet a successful businessman and guess what, he is a night person too. He gave me such courage. At first I stop starting to get up in the morning. If any one including my parents says any thing about my sleep I stand strong n tell them “IT’S MY TIME TO SLEEP, NO MATTER WHAT DO NOT WAKE ME UP IN DAY TIME.” This worked like magic. Then come friends n relatives. If they say any thing I simply woke them 3 in the morning to help me shop online. ahaha

  • I had no idea there was a name for this. I've had this since at least middle school. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I'll make a video with my experiences later.

  • Great video...I've also never been able to sleep at night....

  • Hey nice to see there are others Im yet to be diagnosed but I know I have it. Im in Western Australia Im not sure what the time is on ur end but Im here also till 3am.....every nite......doin stuff

  • I know your battle... it's hard.

  • Thanks for the video its nice to hear other peoples experiences with DSPS, i myself am a 2 year sufferer so not quite the veteran that you are but im still only 18 and from what ive read it can stop after adolescence but it can seem like its never going to stop sometimes!

Now i would join your whole DSPS fellowship idea but that might be hard for me being on the other side of the pond here in England! But anyway thanks again for the vid and keep up the good work! :)

  • It's 6:06am right now.. And I definitely have DSPS...

However, I'm not sure if I want to be normal..

Because I quite like the night... Hahaha(:

  • I finally chose to make a video about D.S.P.S. It will be uploaded in a few hours, and I'll be going to bed at about 9 AM. You video brought a lump in my throat. Thanks for sharing this, you really did a great job.

  • I'm with ya! Its 3:30am right now, and because of final exams, I am attempting to stay up for 24 hours in order to reset my sleep pattern to one more conducive for school. But I know once exams are over I'll go right back to my pattern of sleep at 5 am, wake at 3pm.

  • i love being a night person lol

  • Thank-you for sharing this. I didn't know there was a name for it. Just knowing it is a real condition and that I'm not alone with it is a huge step forward.

  • I only just discovered this today. About an hour ago to be specific I just always thought I was weird lol. People would ask me why I couldn't just sleep and I never knew what to tell them I jst couldn't. It's true what you say that the slightest slip can fuck up your body clock which is really annoying especially since it's so hard to get back on track. It's weird that now I know what I have it doesn't seem that bad.

  • I actually like it. I don't feel alone. It's the only "me time"I have. But yeah,it is a struggle.

  • i have had DSPS off and on for about 6 years now

  • The way I look at it, so-called DSPS is pretty much the same as homosexuality or left-handedness. Society no longer labels homosexuality as a disorder and no longer tries to "fix" homosexuals, and yet it still tries to "fix" nocturnals.

In addition to being nocturnal, I am also left-handed! Crazy huh? And yet when people see me writing with my left-hand, they seem to accept it as a natural variation. No one has ever suggested I should "seek treatment" for my left-handedness.

  • Why do you describe DSPS as a "battle"?

I've been nocturnal for years and it's never been a battle. Sure it was a problem at school, but as soon as school finished I got a night job and the battle was over.

I guess it's a battle against society, since society seems to think we're crazy and/or up to no good. I do find it frustrating when I tell people I sleep during the day, and they ask why. I always turn it around on them and ask them why they sleep at night.

  • @Arwald686 exactly. In a small town like I live in their are a lot of things you can't do at night. Plus, people tend to have wierd ideas about night people. It's also hard to date since most people don't want to adapt to being with a night person...some even get jealous and suspicious and wonder if you are up all night because you're cheating.

  • @Divinity33372 I did have a similar problem with my last girlfriend. I'd get home from work, have dinner, go to call her, and be just in time to listen to her fall asleep on the phone. As romantic as it may have been to listen to her sleep, after a while it was frustrating. I felt like she was basically telling me I was boring, and from my point of view all she did was sleep. But then from her point of view that was probably all I ever did. Surely there is a proper nocturnal networking forum?

  • @Divinity33372 We need to start a nocturnal dating site!!! :D

  • @Arwald686 Not everyone can get a job at night especially not a professional job. You were just lucky. For everyone else, it is indeed a battle.

  • @Arwald686 people judge me all the time for sleeping all morning. like you're less of a person when you don't wake up at 7 in the morning....

  • P.s. when you talked about how people say why can't you just goto sleep at a decent hour. hehe So true. I just can't. Some people just don't understand.

  • @wioombeen The notion that there is a "decent hour" is part of the problem! Decent by whose standards?

  • I've recently learned about Delayed sleep phase syndrome. All the signs and symptoms seem to describe me 100%. I will often sleep at 7am-noon and sleep all day. I have such a hard time getting to sleep. Once i am asleep I will sleep very well. hehe sound familiar?

  • It's the same exact thing for me. I'm 19 years old and it's been going on since I was about 8 I think. My high school years were terrible because of it, only getting 6 hours of sleep at most on weekdays, and the only reason I got that much sleep was because I would do sports and other things that literally exhausted me to the point where I had to sleep. Now I can't even hold a job because of it. Hopefully I can do something about it, or at least work with it somehow......

  • Thanks for making this! I suffer from the same thing, and it makes things so, so hard, especially since I have to get up early to be going to university. It's like no matter how late I've stayed up and had to wake up at, the next night I still won't sleep until 3/4am. It sucks. Had you tryed melatonin? Apparently it can be useful in trying to reset your body-clock. I've not had a chance to try it, it's not for sale in the UK, but I can import it, not sure if it's worth it though.

  • I hear ya on that. I also get depresed and on the days when I have to get up earley I get migrains from not sleeping enough. normal life is unknown to me at this point. I also have insonima so I don't fall asleep easy. I was on a everyother night sleep pattern for a long time, now I am back on a 4-12. not much better but you know how that is. I think we all need to move to Vegas! lol

  • i'm always around. feel free to msg.

  • Yup... I am for sure... go to sleep about 4am - wake up around noon..now that I am on my own schedule.

  • Welcome to the club. Enjoy your complementary basket of isolation and misunderstanding, I certainly do.

  • Hey Divinity, welcome to the vampire family...LOL. Just kidding. I luvvv the night, always have. It's the only time of the day when it gets nice and quiet. It's sort of a meditative time for me, and then at 2 or 3 in the afternoon when I get up, I go for a nice walk, get my sunshine. Getting up at eight or so in the morning actually burns my skin...hee hee! Good Video!

  • btw, feel free to message me at night if you need someone to talk to...I'm frequently up until 2, 3, or 4 am

  • @NoobZandwich Thanks buddy. Just knowing you're there makes a difference.

  • I remember when you posted on my video about it a few months ago...now I'm posting on yours! My temporary solution - next semester all of my classes are in the afternoon.

  • Totally understand I can be up to 3 days no sleep I have been in all types of treatments nothing works and with 5 kids im in a constant bad mood .. I have always hoped for that miracle that will cure me.. And you tell me it doesnt go away very hard to accept living like this the rest of my life. Ay bendito..

  • I'm a night owl too. I don't like the daytime actually. I love the night. It was so hard to have to get up for school. My mum would rip up those shades and say 'time for school' and I'd be like 'aaaaagggh! shut those damn shades mum!' See, it's 1:30 and I'm up!

  • I know that feeling. Never heard of it, but I'm always pushing into the night unless I make an effort. Drives me nuts. I like the day. But I like the night, too. Constant battle between societal norms of work schedules and visual capabilities, and progressively being driven to stay up at night. I'll reclaim the day because norms force me to. Otherwise I don't get so tired till the sun starts to rise again. DSPS, eh?

  • I have always been nocturnal.

Have to force myself to maintain a diurnal schedule.

Love to be awake with just me and the marsupials. Night is beautiful and mysterious.

  • Thanks for making yourselves know. It makes me feel less isolated.

  • @Divinity33372 I LOVED the hissing! LMIAO! teeheehee!

  • @TheDominatrix1969 yea, did I scare you?

  • @Divinity33372 Si! You really scared me. *meeeow* The street sweeper just went by. Oh well. I'm still up!

  • ...I'm a night-owl, too! Always have been. I didn't know it's a condition??? wtf...

I do try to keep a "better" schedule. But...there's no point. I always end up back here.

  • I also suspect that we night owls are what much of the vampire lore in history was about. We nightly weirdos and such...

  • Me too. It's 10:45 in the am, I've been up all night. I've known about the DSPS for a while, and I've got a touch of the ADD too, it's a nightmare. I was thinking last night about the anti-sex worker folks, and they say "women need opportunity, jobs, training, etc" and I thought, the problem is that the world is not set up for me - I can't go to a doctor's appointment at 2 am, I can't go to a 9-6 job at 1 in the pm (and even that's a bit early), Etc.

But yep, I'm out here every night too.
