We don't have wild deer in Australia so I thought this was amazing. When you live in the suburbs any wildlife seems special. We had a kangaroo pass by our lounge room window. I couldn't believe my eyes. The drought brought them down from the hills looking for water.

That's fantastic! First time I saw a deer up close was a few years ago. It was 3am on a cool summer's morning and I was just leaving my work; there in the big empty parking lot were about four deer standing there on a little grassy island, a few hundred feet from the woods, staring at me. It was amazing. I stood there for 10 minutes watching them. It was a special moment.

Oh, they're cute alright, but for God's sake keep your distance! A herd of 5 or 6 whitetail deer can strip a man's carcass to the bone in under 30 seconds... and given half a chance they'll be more than happy to demonstrate, I guarantee. (Call me a fuddyduddy, but I still think it was irresponsible for the government to introduce piranha DNA into the wild deer population for no good reason, at huge cost to the taxpayer and without any analysis of the potential consequences.)
