Rena's VA does try too hard to sound younger, but when the "acting" piece of "voice-acting" comes into play, she does an acceptable job. And Rika I honestly had no problems with. She sounded cute, but unlike in the Japanese, sounded closer to her age. Most of the side-characters were fine, imo. Irie could have been better.

@XfishX Really? Megan Hollingshead's performances as Shion and Mion are, in my opinion, two of the best parts of the dub. They match up pretty well to what I imagine their voices to be, anyway. And Takano? Well, she was voiced by Karen Strassman. You can NEVER go wrong with Karen Strassman. I did like Ooishi too though- he sounded like an old beat cop with a smoking problem, which is exactly who he is. The rest were just... meh. Satoko was the only voice that I was like OMG KILL IT WITH FIRE.

You always prefer the dub you watched FIRST. I watched the Japanese dub first and I hate the english dub. Watched naruto with english dub, hated Japanese version, etc.
No disrespect to the english voice actors and actresses, but the english presentation of Higurashi really does pale in comparison to the original japanese version. This is most likely why Higurashi Kai (which is one of the best animes I have watched) has never been dubbed.
I hated the dub so much, I actually almost gave up on this anime entirely just cause the dub was so horrendous. Then I decided to watch the sub. THANK GOD I did that, now Higurashi is one of my fav animes.
You know what I just thought? None of us know when the original VA in the sub version is good or not. Sometimes it can be obvious but no one I know of is fluent enough in Japanese to tell. It would take a long time to get those nuances down let alone to be able to accurately compare the two.
I hate Keichi's, Satoko's, Rika's, and Takano's voices so badly. Rena and Shion/Mion were fine but Satoko and Rika sound like they're in their 20s. Keichi's doesn't fit well at all and Takano doesn't sound crazy! Oh.. and no USODA! D.<

FUNimation's dubs are usually pretty good-at least the ones I've seen-but this one is..painful. I've tried so many times to tolerate it but I just..can't. It hurts :C
i have to say that i prefer sub over dub and think it's a lot better. it might be because i usually watch a lot of sub animes which is why i'm not use to their english voices. I have to admit they chose some good voices for some of the characters for the higurashi dub

for everyone saying "OMFG THIS DUB SUX", most of these clips are from the preview for the dub (which at the time was unfinished), an example is rika's death when mion (shion) is laughing, this was scene was changed later to sound more like her japanese counterpart. (You can watch rika's death in eng dub to hear the difference if you don't believe me -.- )
keiichi pisses me off in english, cuz in japanese, when he kills people and makes that roaring growl thing, its fucking great dude. and rena sounds like a tranny trying wayyy to hard to sound like bubbles from the powerpuff girls in english.
The heck's wrong with this dub? I don't see any problem, the acting is natural and the voices fit the characters (except Rika's). If you expect the english dub to sound just like the japanese, you have issues, because English/American/Australian/whatever people never sound the same as japanese, not the voices nor the accent. Or do you talk english with japanese accent...? And as for the nippa thing they're discussing below, it's translated as beam, so taking it out made actually no sense ._.

I have to admit, I never liked it when they express to much creativity, like changing what rika said, specially when they cut out the nippa, and I think they could have picked some different voice actors, you know for the ones that didn't seem to match the character by look and sound, not jap to eng, but I can't complain, and chances are if you watched the dubb without seeing the subbed first, you wouldn't be that bothered by it.

@einootspork Why must it sound stupid? the whole point of nippa in the first place was to make rika more cute, and seem more innocent than she is. Heck they could have made her say the same thing and replace nippa with hee hee or something and not lost all of the affect that nippa had. In all honesty though, they could have just kept nippa and it really would not have sounded "really really stupid" anyways. Don't you know kids tend to be a little stupid anyways? Adults are too in all honesty.
Keiichi's VA in English was quite good, Mion's too, but why in hell Rena's voice is like that, so awful. In Japanese her voice is perfect, so cute but when she's angry she sounds realistic and in English it sucked and badly. Same with Rikas voice in English, TERRIBLE. I'm not so sure with Satoko, it's ok but not best.
i agree, it's not best to compare the 1st episode as the starting point can be a little bit bumpy. Personally the middle would of been the best to compare :P
I watched the first season of Higurashi in dubbed and it's not too bad unlike the other anime like Naruto for example. Now I watch Higurashi in subbed and it's better than dubbed.

XD And I love Shion's crazy laugh in the Japanese dub, but I love it in the English, too. xD Probably because she's voiced by Nurse Joy from Pokemon, so it makes me think of her torturing the injured Pokemon or something. xD
I think the only reason people are disagreeing on the dub is because they are used to the Japanese sub more. I can understand that but I like the dub because the voices are good and better then other anime dubs PLUS I don't have to strain my eyes looking at the subtitles...
Well the english dub could've been better but If you actually know Japanese they're pretty mcuh sayign the same thing. My only gripe is only the Japanese versions can capture the cuteness of Hanyuu and Rika, and only Japanese has the awesome maniacal laughter. The only reason I listened to the enlish version was so I could take a break on translations. But sense I understand both it makes no difference to me. I do love Japanese Shion laugh though. That part of the series I only watch in Japanese
I think the English is .. ehh. It sounds bad to me because I always watch subbed anime. but if I watched dub it's be .. okay. It's just the sub seems to have more emotion behind the voice, that's the main thing really.
I watched the dub first. People say that they hate the dub. But hey, Shion's English dub is better than the Japanese dub to me. Also the other voices arent that bad. Mion's voice seems to fit her well. The downsides are Rika's voice, her "Nipah~!" and Rena's voice. Also the laughs. I don't really like the English dubbed laughs. Overall, not everything about the English dub is terrible :)
Only Rika's English voice really sucks. Mion and Rena's voice are actually better than the original Japanese version. People who think the Japanese sounds more natural just watch so much damn anime that they have no idea what a real person speaking real Japanese sounds like.
The only complaint I have is with Rika's English voice. The voice does not work on such a cute character. Even though it was voiced by a girl, it sounded more like a young man.

Jeez you people make the dub sound like it's tossed out trash that was burned and chopped up into little tiny pieces. I mean, I couldn't even see season 1 without a dub, and sure I missed USODA! but still it wasn't that bad. Besides people always make fun of the things they say in japanese. The original voice actors suck in the beginning, too. They just need to have time to adapt. Like after a little while in the first season of Higurashi, the English voices sounded great to me.

The Dub is good. It's not the best but it still is good compared to other anime dubs.
One thing I don't like is that Rika's english voice sounds a bit off...Of course it is difficult to pull of the perfect voice for a little girl who has two different voices at once.
Just sounds like bad casting to me. The voice actors just don't seem to be the right for the parts or not in the frame of mind. Or just trying too hard.

hmm... my thoughts.... well i am currently watching the dub but i watched some japanese clips first. so, i do agree that the laughs are better in japanese. plus, the japanese doesnt sound overacted. personally overall i think both are fine but japanese is a little more appealing.
English one definitely has better voice acting for screaming and laughing. As for just talking, I don't see anything wrong with either, except It doesn

I think "Come to Daddy, beef patty!" was a lot more clever and funnier than "Time to eat a hamburger!" Can you imagine how horrible it'd be if they were just talking the Japanese lines out?

for everyone saying "OMFG THIS DUB SUX", most of these clips are from the preview for the dub (which at the time was unfinished), an example is rika's death when mion (shion) is laughing, this was scene was changed later to sound more like her japanese counterpart. (You can watch rika's death in eng dub to hear the difference if you don't believe me -.- )

Even though most parts of the dub were really bad, a few insane parts were pretty nice. Plus, Mion's voice was actually done pretty well.
If it makes anyone feel any better, I think Funimation is in the process of redubbing it.

The heck's wrong with this dub? I don't see any problem, the acting is natural and the voices fit the characters (except Rika's). If you expect the english dub to sound just like the japanese, you have issues, because English/American/Australian/whatever people never sound the same as japanese, not the voices nor the accent. Or do you talk english with japanese accent...? And as for the nippa thing they're discussing below, it's translated as beam, so taking it out made actually no sense ._.

The first clip did sound the same as the original, but it was literally just grunting and smacking sound effects. Whenever Rika opens her mouth to speak in the English dub, I wince because the voice is so horrible. And the writing? Well let me just say this: "come to daddy, beef patty!!"

I have to admit, I never liked it when they express to much creativity, like changing what rika said, specially when they cut out the nippa, and I think they could have picked some different voice actors, you know for the ones that didn't seem to match the character by look and sound, not jap to eng, but I can't complain, and chances are if you watched the dubb without seeing the subbed first, you wouldn't be that bothered by it.

@einootspork Why must it sound stupid? the whole point of nippa in the first place was to make rika more cute, and seem more innocent than she is. Heck they could have made her say the same thing and replace nippa with hee hee or something and not lost all of the affect that nippa had. In all honesty though, they could have just kept nippa and it really would not have sounded "really really stupid" anyways. Don't you know kids tend to be a little stupid anyways? Adults are too in all honesty.

Keiichi's VA in English was quite good, Mion's too, but why in hell Rena's voice is like that, so awful. In Japanese her voice is perfect, so cute but when she's angry she sounds realistic and in English it sucked and badly. Same with Rikas voice in English, TERRIBLE. I'm not so sure with Satoko, it's ok but not best.

normal naruto is dubbed pretty well, just the first few episodes are really bad... naruto shippuden on the other hand is dubbed really well!

I watched the first season of Higurashi in dubbed and it's not too bad unlike the other anime like Naruto for example. Now I watch Higurashi in subbed and it's better than dubbed.

I think the only reason people are disagreeing on the dub is because they are used to the Japanese sub more. I can understand that but I like the dub because the voices are good and better then other anime dubs PLUS I don't have to strain my eyes looking at the subtitles...

Well the english dub could've been better but If you actually know Japanese they're pretty mcuh sayign the same thing. My only gripe is only the Japanese versions can capture the cuteness of Hanyuu and Rika, and only Japanese has the awesome maniacal laughter. The only reason I listened to the enlish version was so I could take a break on translations. But sense I understand both it makes no difference to me. I do love Japanese Shion laugh though. That part of the series I only watch in Japanese

I think the English is .. ehh. It sounds bad to me because I always watch subbed anime. but if I watched dub it's be .. okay. It's just the sub seems to have more emotion behind the voice, that's the main thing really.

I watched the dub first. People say that they hate the dub. But hey, Shion's English dub is better than the Japanese dub to me. Also the other voices arent that bad. Mion's voice seems to fit her well. The downsides are Rika's voice, her "Nipah~!" and Rena's voice. Also the laughs. I don't really like the English dubbed laughs. Overall, not everything about the English dub is terrible :)

Only Rika's English voice really sucks. Mion and Rena's voice are actually better than the original Japanese version. People who think the Japanese sounds more natural just watch so much damn anime that they have no idea what a real person speaking real Japanese sounds like.

Jeez you people make the dub sound like it's tossed out trash that was burned and chopped up into little tiny pieces. I mean, I couldn't even see season 1 without a dub, and sure I missed USODA! but still it wasn't that bad. Besides people always make fun of the things they say in japanese. "Ooh that person said llama but they really said I really really hate you!"

@chipmunksfanman No. I don't really see the difference other than the fact that one's in English and one's in Japanese. I mean, yeah, in the very beginning the dubs are bad, but I think that's because the voice actors need to get used to their character.
The original voice actors suck in the beginning, too. They just need to have time to adapt. Like after a little while in the first season of Higurashi, the English voices sounded great to me.

The Dub is good. It's not the best but it still is good compared to other anime dubs.
One thing I don't like is that Rika's english voice sounds a bit off...Of course it is difficult to pull of the perfect voice for a little girl who has two different voices at once.

hmm... my thoughts.... well i am currently watching the dub but i watched some japanese clips first. so, i do agree that the laughs are better in japanese. plus, the japanese doesnt sound overacted. personally overall i think both are fine but japanese is a little more appealing.
