  • Patrick Byrne was trying to say the education system in America was failing minorities and with out an education you had no chance in life. But his choice of words in making the point just goes to show how even with higher education you can make a stupid statment. Patrick -I'm a old white guy with three business degrees who can't find a job but I'll bet 50cent has no GED and has a great job!

  • its the human 'species' you fucking spastic.

BTW, since when did the term mexcrement/hispanic (or whatever you are) become interchangable with white?

  • Race as referred to in my reply falls under the following definition: "A class or kind of people unified by shared interests, habits, or characteristics". So it was indeed a correct usage of the word. Species would also have functioned, but it was my intent to state that we are all of the same group in this instance.

Spastic? The only one I see having a spasm is you. My video reply was anything but spastic.

  • Part 2..."Mexcriment/hispanic" eh? The use of that term really defines the type of person you are now doesn't it. This thread was not about race or color, it was the overall need to have an education. You on the other hand will see it differently because you are just that type of person.

Oh, and before you correct someone's English, how about you open a dictionary first? By the way, I am white.

  • He did not say we "should" do anything. You need to LISTEN. He said might as well. As in: Without an education those kids' futures are in serious trouble. Does anyone listen anymore? All these NAACP nuts are too much. Patrick NEVER said "should" he was talking about what happens if you don't have an education. The people who want Patrick to apologize are the same ones who's kids NEED TO GET THE EDUCATION HE WANTS THEM TO HAVE. Five stars to you for your brave video.

  • Use critical thinking to realize that this is just such an example, figure out who stands to gain, and what motivation someone would have to pull just this part of the interview, and if this excerpt really reflects the intent of the speaker or is just a tool for someone with an agenda.

  • Here is the reason that I even felt the need to respond to the video in the first place. If you take a piece of a conversation or a book you can make an argument for or against anything depending on what you select. The same goes for the Bible, in that you can make a case for or against every one of the ten commandments.

  • So At any rate kdo11. I didn't graduate highschool, and I make more money than most of the kids that did graduate in my class. The point is the quality of education that people are recieving, not just the diploma dip ass. Do you really believe that todays highschools are really doing a good job? If so then you are truly blind to this issue. Also since you seem to have a reading problem(that is to take a look at the whole picture)take a look at my other comments, especially the one right below.

  • I'm with wikedsyd on this one. kdo11 missed the buss on the real issue with public schooling. Unfortunately that is an issue that has no easy answer. It's designed for the middle of the road student as a group and is rapidly trying to pick up the pace with kids that are not "getting" it. Those that are achievers are not really challenged and that is just as bad as leaving a slow one behind but not yet recognized nationaly.

  • An answer for that is private schooling where they are not geard for the median student, but able to catch the whole range. Having school age children (7 & 11) this is an issue close to my heart. Private school may be the course I choose for when my children hit High School for some very obvious reasons.

  • Well I went to public schools and i did not do well after my freshman year of high school i went to a private school ever since then i have done well and if anything the work is more challenging than public schools... it is the way the teachers teach they don't just hand you the work and say do it they help you ... I also am from Utah VOTE FOR 1

  • Then making for smaller classes in public schools, and more individualized attention(not to mention a higher budet per pupil). What patrick is refering to is a complete failure to recognize the education crisis that is facing our country. I mean we are like 25 out of 30 in the world, and no one seems to care.

  • I am a drop out and it's not because I was behind, it is because I was bored with "busy work" I already understood.

Meaning that the school system failed to recognize the potential in my self and any number of other kids, by symply giving the same curriculum to every child. By allowing the parents to choose the school (and thereby the curriculum that their kids will be taught) It creats an oportunity for individual attention, that most kids would not recieve in public schools.

  • you obviously didnt understand the "busy work" because understanding means nothing if you cant apply it to getting an education and raising your potential income level. dont blame your laziness and dismissal of an education on the schools, its your fault you didnt get through high school.

  • When you have something relevant to the conversation to say, then go ahead and comment. I mean, did you even bother to read my other comments, if so then you would understand where I am comming from. Lazy and dismissive indeed, the point was that the public schools failed to keep my attention, with the lack of a challenging curriculum. P.S. I know plenty people that are genuine dumb asses that graduated highschool, so don't try to pass off your judgemental bullshit with me.

  • i could care less about the other things you've said. whats bullshit is that just because you werent amused you chose not to further your education. its not the school's job to keep your attention, you're the definition of stupid by choosing not to get a real education and blaming it on them.

  • Real education,..... please, how many public school graduates really do something with them selves. Amused isn't the issue, what is the issue is that public schools are fucking broken. People don't get a quality education, thay get pushed out as fast as possible with the least amount of effort. I make the same amount of money as I would if I had graduated, so where is this elusive education that I missed out on?

  • I actually have had the oportunity to speak with patrick(I work for his company). One of the big points he is trying to make is when youdrop out not only are you losing out on the rest of your HS ed, but also it makes it obvious that the public school system has failed you up to this point already.

IE you don't just drop out if your recieving something that behooves you and keeps your attention.

  • What patrick is talking about isn't just a HS diploma, but the quality of education people recieve. Just because you are a certified teacher, that does not mean that you are more qualified than someone else with a higher degree of education. IE some one with a doctorates degree in a given subject may be denied a job, over a certified teacher with almost no practicle knowlege out side of basic classes.

  • Instead of making this film, this guy needs to get an education. Go to college, get an education and stop whining about being a disadvantaged white man for heaven's sake.

  • You know what it is.... People don't understand or fully grasp (or even at all) certain things if they don't experience or witness a whole lot. So it's all empty, useless, and super trite rhetoric anyway.

  • Not just trite rhetoric nzaphnix, an open dialog that may just promote critical thinking. Why was this excerpt the one pulled out, who stands to gain from it, and should we believe everything we see/hear? Things are not what they initially appear to be all the time, and that is why I weighed in on the subject. AA is another monkey that has been both good and bad, but not the main topic of this particular thread.

  • This dude is an idiot!

  • Your post was so incredibly articulate amelgepo, thanks for your input.

  • im on wellfare, gettin financial aid, public housing (sec 8 baby) and im BLACK hell yea and im loving it. god bless america haha

  • I'm black and this is flat out racism. He is stereotyping an entire group of people. He didn't say criminals or deadbeats he said minorities as a whole. Everyone who drops out of school isn't dumb or lazy. Many people especially Hispanics have family responsibilities and have to work full time and can't attend school. The term "Burning" is someone whom he sees as "Waste". What about a 4.0gpa student who has twins and has to drop out? Should you burn her?

  • OK, Redman9250 is black and that automatically made him the authority on racism. If I have been the victim of crime does that qualify me to be a judge? Watch the whole interview, not just the excerpt and then see if you feel the same way. "Burning" and "Throwing away" were allusions to the importance of education, not an intent to do it.

  • I agree with your bottom line...

Some of the middle is not what I've experienced..."Alot more oppty for minorities than middle class white person" couldn't agree at all on that (particularly white males).

I don't agree with the hoopla over the comment either and while he could have made his point differently, after listening, I'm hard pressed to think he really meant those words literally as being suggested.

  • Honestly, it depends on where you are at whether you will receive more opportunities being caucasion or perceived as a minority. I've lived all over the country and it swings hard in both directions. That in itself is a pretty sad statement about our country...hopefully we will learn to do better.

  • I didn't even take the job because of that lingering in my mind. It is not an issue of priviledge because of race, culture, or color. It is an issue of institutionally always starting in the hole

  • You chose not to take the job because you had a feeling. The job was not denied you because of your color, and you were offered it on your own merit which speaks reams about you on two counts. It may have been the way you dressed or even carried yourself that had an initially negative connotation, but you didn't ask, you just ASSUMED. Your just as guilty as them at that point.

  • Maybe, but I was put in position TO make that assumption. It was the words that were chosen, the time and way they were spoken, that lead me to that conclusion. Just to be contrary, if I were to see a person in a white sheet, should I assume he's a playing a ghost...kidding, but you get me point?

  • Lastly, how often are you, personally, in a situation where you are pegged before you speak, just for showing up. I experience that at least 2 or 3 times a week. I have even been told before that "when we first say you, we didn't expect you to do so well." Now that could be for a number of reasons. However, my first thought was it has to be because I am a big black man, so they expected less???

  • I'm a soldier in the US Army which means that I am part of a 1% group of Americans who choose to defend thier country. That right there makes me a minority. Depending on where I go I am also judged immediately. It is my personality and merit as an individual that removes that in a positive way when I am faced with ignorance.

  • C'mon that's totally different and you know it..but I will grant you that you are a braver soul than I. I deeply thank all military people because it is not easy....

  • Also, why would it be necessary to say that minorities without HS diplomas should be thrown away? Wouldn't that factor deal with all races and cultures.

  • Perspective. From his perspective be it right or wrong he feels that minorities have enough problems already without adding the lack of an HS diploma to the list. Heck, just try to join the Military without one...well lately that may not be such a problem... although like you he would have been better served to have included all dropouts.

  • My point was about diplomas as the end all be all. I commented somewhere else about the other options available. I'm not advocating doing nothing, just that HS diploma is not the only answer. I count the GED as differnt as well as other things. I am for education, I am for diploma, but I am also for other alternatives too

  • Or maybe he just thinks minorities are not as competent as white folks. But hey, don't look at me, I'm not clairvoyant, so I wouldn't know how Byrne "feels." Let's listen to all the people that "feel" and "believe" instead of the people that really think, and more importantly, aren't afraid to.

  • Is it a really that big of an advantage to graduate with a HS diploma. I would argue that there a number of avenues one could take that are not predicated on HS graduation. Yes, they will be harder. Yes, it is better to finish HS. But to say that ANYONE should be thrown away is short sighted and pretty f'ed up.

  • "Is it a really that big of an advantage to graduate with a HS diploma"

    The answer is yes!!!!!!!!

  • Obtaining a HS Diploma will provide opportunities that would not otherwise even be present without it. Further if they graduate they are older which means more life experience to go into the workplace that should make aquiring those interpersonal skills easier to assimilate. Yes, there are benefits.

  • My point was that he did not clarify about the diploma. GED, alternative school, and others are options that I don't know if he was alluding to..

  • Further, I was a HS drop-out. I lied about it and got jobs, but 5 yrs later I got my GED and found that I just needed US History and US Government to get a diploma so I did it. I'm happy to say that I am indeed a HS Graduate...albiet 5 years late, and used it to join the military in 91. (something I could not do without it)

  • I see you used the human race as a reason to comment. So with that logic, is it humane to through anyone away.

  • That statement was not advocating the throwing away of anyone, it symbolized the importance of education, and the consequences of not attaining one. The thing I don't advocate is the hoopla over using an excerpt from an interview and judging it based only on those sentences instead of the complete interview. It is someones personal agenda at this point.

  • This guy is the subject of a subpoena and investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission. How great can he be?! He's trying to fucking privatize education, do you get that?! Let's just give it all to the corporations, because we know how great they are!

  • There are privileges to being born Caucasian. I've worked hard to get where I am, and I did not make it this far because of the color of my skin. Affirmative Action was created to level the playing field. It wasn't meant to help a CEO meet his/her race quota. I believe there have been miss-uses of AA, but it is unfair to point the finger at minorities. Direct your reservations toward the companies who bypass "qualified" applicants to avoid scrutiny for lack of work place diversity.

  • I agree and in no way did I intend to point the finger minorities. I was pointing my finger at the miss-uses, not at AA as a whole. I however don't understand how it levels the playing feild if one person is accepted merely for the color of their skin, and not personal merit. Therefore in my opinion it is like saying "It's ok we know your inferior we'll make it better though". P.S. I don't think that any person is inferior to another.

  • Secondly I know that there are racist people out there, we should instead focus on ousting them from there positions of power. That would level the playing feild alot more evenly than, just giving things out. I know that this would be difficult, but the end result one of true equality and not one of forced diversity.

  • Lastly, these are just my OPINIONS, and not something I am trying to say is a fact. So please any body who would like to post a comment on this issue, don't post anything hateful torwards any race or opinion. Because they are just that, opinions and if you don't like them it is your right to disagree. But please don't any one turn this into a hate full issue.

  • Of course they're your opinions, who else's opinions would they be??? And #1, when it comes to AA, they don't just merely base your application off of your race, how fucking stupid would that be? They still want qualified students, but will take race into account to their advantage because it was taken into account to their disadvantage before. That's the most basic way to put it. I'm really hoping everyone learned at least some of these things in history class.

  • My advantage is that I was brought up with the understanding that I make it on my own merits, and that NOBODY owes me a damned thing. My failures are all my own, not the result of being a minority. Minorities are led to believe that they are owed something, either by the press, or by their parents, and that is not true. They need to earn their way just as I do based on self merit.

  • You do have more advantages because you're white. You don't enslave a population for over a century, deprive them of basic/equal rights for another century after you "emancipate" them, turn around and expect them to be in the same position as you.

It's like saying, hey I didn't put extra marbles in my jar, I just didn't let you have any/as many, so therefore we're equal.

  • I think what he is refering to is that Affirmitive action, will give a scholorship to a minority who has a lower grade point average simply because he is a minority. Giving people hand outs is no way so say sorry, and I would find it insulting to get some thing I didn't earn simply because I am a minority. It would make it feel fake.
