Note that the speed of your kids is irrelevant to focusing on them. The question is, when you realize something is happening that you want to shoot, how fast will it acquire focus? I'd say around 1/3 of a second, depending on where it was last focused.

Do you know if the other Sigma 24-70mm with HSM is much faster focusing? I mean is it worth spending the extra on, because it seems stupid to me to have two different models of the same lens, maybe if one model had OS but not for HSM motors. Thanks.
I am looking at some fast aperture zoom lenses and can't justify the price of the 24-70L by Canon nor the other Sigma (HSM) one; I was very concerned about autofocus as I do many shots that require fast AF. It seems my concerns are gone; while it's a tad noisy in this, it won't be an issue at all for me.
nice video. too noisy AF for me though, like the HSM better. and switching from AF to manual is kind of a hassle. sharp photos though, were these straight from the cam?
you really should turn off your camera before switching lenses, my personal opinion.
@roberthemsley2 Possibly! But I was comparing a couple lens, the ones with "macro" tend to have a higher F No. But maybe also minimum focusing distance. (:
Without an image stabilizer , is it easy to get used to , to take sharp pictures at reasonably low shutter speeds ? Also , is it heavy , or just moderate ? Thanks . Great review btw
@Crussy777 I don't take images at too low shutter speed even with IS, as I usually photograph moving subjects (people/animals). Keep your ISO so you can keep the shutter speed up. You can try it with your current lens, turn of the IS and see how you get on ;)
Remember that motion blur can't be fixed in post production, a bit of noise can be fixed easily.
@karlosdajackal awesome. thanks a bunch mate. i'm more into taking pictures of people, and i'm using the canon eos 550d with the standard kit lens. i'm thinking about getting sigma lenses. something cheap and good. should i get the 70-300mm lens?
hey I have a question...why does it extends if you zoom to 24mm and instands if you zoom to 70mm?? I can't understand it. between 24-70mm it looks a little bit "crapy"
@Asassine0 Thats just how its designed to work, the canon 24-70L is the same. I guess its the best way to get the optical quality at this focal length range.
@dragonknightsages yes, slightly different optical elements smaller, and much, much more expensive. Sigma are keeping this lens also as a cheap option
@karlosdajackal Hey thx. Hmm do they still sell the non-HSM ones? How much cheaper isit? You can tell me the price difference in your country then maybe i can convert it myself? appreciate it. thx!
@dragonknightsages I think if your on a 1.6x sensor like a 40/50d or a 7d, then its not worth it, if you are on a 5d mark 2, or 1d mark 4 then i would go for the HSM version.
@jd18100 I've used neither, but I know people are using it successfully on both, you can probably seem sample shots on the flickr group for this lens.
thanks for this useful review.. as far as you only review on the autofocus, maybe you can share about the image quality (IQ) of this lens at 70 mm and f/2.8? because i have read so many reviews that stated the weakness of this lens at that position. It mentioned that at 70 mm and f/2.8, the IQ is so soft and make you think that it is missfocus... thanks before..
Does not have weather sealing like the canon, but if you don't shoot in the rain with a 1d body that should not be too much of an issue. Filter thread is 82mm so a filter (if you use one) will cost a little more, however...
1/3 the price, about 90-95% of the optical performance, only really weaker on CA at some settings. Focus speed and accuracy is pretty good as you see in the video. If I was buying a 24-70 again today, I take the Sigma HSM first, then this, then the Canon L.
thanks bro... i am torn between this and the canon L equivalent, and the major disappointment for me in the canon is the ultra-high price... i am on a tight budget.. i am a bit concerned about the optical performance of this lens, but coming from an actual sigma user like you, i am convinced.. thanks..
Have a look on flickr, there is a group for this lens, and for the canon 24-70L Search for both. Both lenses get used by photographers all over the world of all skill levels.
Same as any other lens, use the correct shutter speed to cancel out camera shake and you get sharp images. So when shooting static objects at 24mm use a shutter of at least 1/40, when shooting static objects at 70mm use a shutter of at least 1/100.
For moving subjects you will want faster shutter speeds anyway. I would not shoot people with a shutter less than 1/40. If it was that dark, I'd got to 1/250 and use the flash.
Note that the speed of your kids is irrelevant to focusing on them. The question is, when you realize something is happening that you want to shoot, how fast will it acquire focus? I'd say around 1/3 of a second, depending on where it was last focused.

Faster than my Sigma 105mm EX DG Macro I use on my Canon 600D, but I use manual focus 90% of the time since its quite quick so don't really mind.

i used to own the same lens for my D7000. very sharp but has big time back focusing issue. even AF fine tuning doesn't help. :(

So the macro version autofocus works with non-autofocus built-in dslrs like d3100?
tcuk 9 months ago
i just purchased this lens its on its way, but i never knew the zoom would be in reverse which is a big issue if the camera is on a glidecam
does it extend that much on 24mm?
jrm769 9 months ago
I just purchased one and love it. I couldn't see the reason for spending the extra money for the HSM version. For Nikon.
