Jan Ackerman was hailed in the 70's as one of the top rock guitarists - on this performance it is easy to see why. The complexity of this medley with the high vocal range, breakneck speed, swirling rhythms and sheer excitement make this a must for all favourite lists. The courageous Dutch - rock on.
Saw them at the old 'Village Bowl' in Bournemouth arond 1973...fantastic..!! Now that was a great venue......I also remember The Sensational Alex Harvey Band there, and Chuck Berry, Blondie, The Stylistics....happy days !
First saw Focus at Kingston Polytechnic. Sat on the floor 10 feet away. Had never even heard of them before 1973 I think. Came away gobsmacked. This brings back some memories. Music lives on. It's the only good thing about still being alive.
Excellent .. the very best live performance from a really talented group .. much better than the recorded version ... great drummer great guitarist ...
That festive interlude was even more bizarre than the time I saw Finntroll stop a gig to make the audience join in with them singing happy birthday to their guitarist...
@chriswoodize "that finger nail is really creepy." Yes it is but it serves a purpose and he grew it that way for a reason. That finger nail is used as a natural pick when he plays the acoustic guitar. Many guitar players take great care and preparation growing and caring for finger nails like that.
Watching this video made me very happy - it's completely ACE. Can't help but agree with the comment below about Thijs van Leer's vocals being absolutely astonishing. What a classic tune.

Yan Ackerman, one of the greatest guitarists and still touring. I love this performance as does my 10 year old son, If you can play the chord sequence clearly, you are there.
Focus were nasty guys. They did bits of rock (very good rock, as it happens) just to fool people into buying their albums which were JAZZ - eeek! Jeez, the money I wasted on that band! I'm sorry they couldn't make a living out of jazz, (obviously their first love), but they had no right to trick people like that! Shame on you, Focus! I know where I'd stick that flute!
I would of always said that they were Jazz Fusion anyway like Coulossem. I know the 70's was a diffrant time but surley thay had listening posts back then.
@MrAttPatt you sure it was to trick people? And not a case of....their experiments becoming more popular than their "main" stuff? Wouldn't make them the only ones. I devastated a family member by showing her that that majority of Christ De Burgh's work is NOTHING like Lady in Red. And we all know, the majority of Green Day's stuff is nothing like Good Riddance, or Wake Me Up When September Ends (for which I am thankful!) Then again some bands changed...Yardbirds were originally Blues!
Focus played every style from jazz fusion to classical/mediaeval inspired progressive rock. Experimentation and humour are inherent in everything they do - and I love them.
Excellent guitar by Jan Akkerman..... Thijs van Leer must have been a bit pissed to lose his flute, but someone would have to have lost the plot to agree to let him have a mic!!!
I feel like shit right now, but this still gets me moshing...I can't help it. Focus kick ass. great version of Sylvia and brilliant version of Hocus Pocus
Absolutely fantastic - took me 10 years to find a biker/hippy who knew the song I was humming badly was the song my now 54 year old (10 yrs older) brother used to play every night
