Public health care exists and works very well in other developed nations. This is yet another area where, compared to it's allies, America looks downright backward. I don't see how you flakes can finding an endless supply of funds for your war chests, yet the notion of making sure no one dies for being poor in America sounds outrageous. The fact the matter is, "socialized medicine" is less expensive than a private health care industry, where the sick are considered an opportunity for profit.

Our city has only one dentist that accepts medicaid. Why do think no one else will take these patients? Expensive bureaucratic red tape and low gov'ment payments! btw Making a profit in US in not a sin.

ME: I think you mean "Hypocratic." Private insurers already determine which services will and will not be covered. The difference is, a public system has the interests of the public in mind, while the current system favors greed at the expense of public health.

ME: You write as if such contracts would have unilaterally determined terms (namely, from your examples, the doctors.) Contracts are NEGOTIATED. Further, since physicians are paid by billing the government for services rendered, you won't have doctors being interested in turning away patients.

Why don't you ask the Canadians, who come here for their health care, if they are satisfied with nationalized health care? Nationalized health care is expensive in other countries and the patients have to submit to rationing at their gov'ment's discretion. If I need a procedure or surgery, I don't want Uncle Sam telling me no. I want the freedom to choose my own health care, my own doctors and it's not any of the gov'ments business.

The "Cato Institute" is a libertarian activist/think-tank organization. That obviously doesn't of itself disqualify them from having a valid argument. However, it DOES raise my suspicions, when I see such ideologues reporting something so obviously false and removed from reality as this assessment of socialized medicine. At the heart of their conviction, ultimately, is the misguided belief that unregulated markets would "solve everything."

I have said before that I do not like the current insurance monster and wish it would go away, however I don't think gov'ment and special interests should take its place. If insurance companies went back to covering only emergency and critical care and hospitalization and people paid for their own well-care and routine visits, the cost of health care would dramatically decrease because of competitiveness. I am dreaming of course. It'll never happen. So I believe McCain has the best idea.

I just re-read what I wrote, and was unhappy with my being dismissive. That was me being crabby. My apologies. As for all of these Canadians you speak of, who? I am a Canadian (married to an American), with family both through marriage and by blood living on both sides of the border. I know what happens to the uninsured in America, and even the problems the insured working class run into. The Canadian health care system saved my life (cancer.) The "freedom" stuff is just rhetoric.

KosmicCitizen - UR-4given. This election has made me extra crabby myself. My family is uninsured. Drs are very willing to work with me to provide the best health care and reduce costs. I price shop for good deals and have found they are more than willing to be competitive. Under McCain's plan, which I believe is still in the development phase, I will be able to choose a health package that fits my family's needs better than the plan Obama has put forth. The cost for that freedom is worth it.

I know folks on Welfare and I know folks who most would consider rich. I will not address some of your points here in this public forum because they are my friends. Loving and caring for others is my Christian duty, not my patriotic duty. As for Wall-street, I don't believe taxpayers should be forced to bail them out. We're talking about future generations having to bear the brunt of that fiasco brought on by the Clinton administration against all common sensibilities.
