When frasier opens "his" poster at about 7:30, I couldn't help but notice, hey, there's nothing on it! Im surprised they didn't re-film that shot, and have him not open it!
There is a double meaning to Frasier's opening speech. When this episode first aired at the beginning of the 98-99 tv season, "Frasier" was taking over the coveted Thursday 9 pm time slot from "Seinfeld," which had aired its last episode the previous May. Hence Frasier's comment about having big shoes to fill and his predecessor being much beloved.
Haha, I just love the comments on Frasier pages where people actually think it's real, and it's on many pages. Such as the top comment here. This is TV Land, it's not real. How fun would that suggestion actually be against the SITUATIONAL COMEDY (sit-com) the writers have created for his imaginary ego. Some folk here definitely need a visit to him!!
that's probably enough now? this is sickening? why tell him to express his feelings if a room full of (yes, white) people can't handle it when he does? hypocricy anyone?
@g9yx1s Later he uses his own home as an office, and I know he's using Daphne's room but he could still have made it work and that rids him of the cost of rental and utilities and as far as advertising is concerned, I'm certain he could still have afforded some, as well as the fact that Seattle's beloved Frasier Crane wouldn't have a terribly difficult time building up a patient list, he does have some level of notoriety.
Aw, Frasier's poor, mortified expressions and mannerisms are so real, once he starts watching the baby cam tape. The way he gets embarrassed to be holding the food and seems really awkward - I can imagine how humiliated someone would feel in that situation! :S
@15hcw01 he looked SOO familiar that I had to look him up on the cast list when I first watched this. When I realized who it was, I watched that scene over and over again...his hair!!!
I agree completely that it's for humour, and love this episode, but it's not so much this episode as every subsequent episode where he does not even seem to consider going into private practice...Then again, expecting logic from a sit-com isn't the most constructive thing one can do, especially, as noted by dtometallica, when it's Frasier being too stubborn and somewhat insane for his own good! ^^
Frasier broke a cardinal rule of job hunting; he was too arrogant. He acted as if he all ready had the job. That alone could have destroyed any chance of getting that job.
Am I the only one that's confused as to why, whilst he's out of a job, Frasier doesn't just go back into private practice the way he does later in the series? That would be a supplemental income and, well, it might not be show business, but he /is/ a doctor.
@SeeInBlackAndWhite could be money. when he does go back into it he's still doing the radio show so it's not his only source of income. He'd have to have a good few regular patients to earn a good living,
@SeeInBlackAndWhite I agree completely, but Frasier was wrapped up in his celebrity. He wasn't just mourning the loss of his job, but the loss of his fame as well, so going back into private practice just wasn't what he wanted. And, this being Frasier, he went for what he wanted instead of what's smart. He's either too smart for his own good or too selfish for his own good most of the time.
@SeeInBlackAndWhite I'd like to think the episode was about Frasier not being able to move on with his life. Yes, he could have got his supplementary income in practice, but Frasier did not comes to terms with the fact, as Niles puts it, that he's "not famous anymore", and kept holding on to getting a celebrity job.
@SeeInBlackAndWhite If you watch the episode, the cause of his depression was merely the fact that he wasn't famous anymore. Money wasn't his problem, nor doubts of his abilities as a professional - the loss of his celebrity status was key here. Which is why he breaks into tears when Niles pushes him down that emotional abyss: "Frasier... you're not famous anymore...!"
@SeeInBlackAndWhite Exactly! I loved this series when it originally aired, but the more I see reruns and rewatch old episodes, the more I'm annoyed by illogical plotlines (like a limping 60+ year old ex-cop suddenly dating a bunch of younger women etc..etc..), and the fact that a couple of psychologists (and a radio host) act like French aristocrates. I know it's comedy, but come on.. The first couple of seasons were the best ones, before everybody started to act "happy"..
@SeeInBlackAndWhite: It costs money to set up a practice: office rental , utilities, advertising. You are losing money until you build up your patient list
@SeeInBlackAndWhite I thought the same - up until Niles pushed him over the edge with the fame thing! I think that was the bigger issue for Frasier, satisfying his ego. Besides, it doesn't appear that his wallet was hurt too badly. Three caterers? Come on!
0:17 is reference to Frasier returning to Thursday at 9pm ET in 1998 after Seinfeld ended its run. (interestingly enough the same time slot for Cheers in the 80s and 90s)
