Pete came onstage in a coffin in this rare 1 time reunion gig ... it was Benefit to help Gabriel out because Gabriels world music n dance festival flopped ..Gabriel said he had threats against his life over the inability to pay the shows expenses , Genesis came in to help out Pete ,even though he wasnt in Genesis anymore Phil, Tony n the guys werent going to let their good friend Pete, go under because Gabriels show went under financially
I would give ANYTHING to have these guys stop being dicks, and get together one more time, for the fans (like me and my 67 y.o. mom) who has loved them from the very beginning, dont they owe that to them? I love pete anyway, but this attitude about this is pissing me off, he even didnt come to the hall of fame thing, I think thats really shitty, and I have loved pete since I was 2!
@onemarilynfan U have peter to thank for that. He's the only one that doesn't have the stones to give their old set a whirl. He's too caught up making substandard new music for his next disappointing album. What he did with Genesis was new and unlike anything else ever, why can't he realize that and respect what the fans want? What about us? I'm 17, I never got to see them live. Put on a show for us you stuck up prick!
@Shaggyshadric Are you a creator yourself? Creators want to go on creating, even if it is "substandard", not recreating, even "masterpieces". When these bands rejoin, they dopit for the money, or brief moments of fun, and go on with their own lives, however fucked up these may be.
@Shaggyshadric I would love to see a Genesis reunion as much as the next person. however we are really faced with 2 issues now. 1. Phil's hearing is shot 2. Pete can't sing like that anymore
So what you would get is a weaker version of what you remember. Is that what we really want?
@cranie4 thing is, I don't remember. Loads of us don't remember. I'm 18, I never had the chance to see them live. I wish I did, I really wish I could've gone, even on a bad night and hear them mess everything up. Good or bad performance doesn't matter to me. It's the fact that they are the real deal, that the music is theirs, that you can go and share something with the artists that mean so much to you. The Musical Box is fine and all, but they aren't Genesis.
@Shaggyshadric I'm 43 and don't remember the Gabriel Era. Genesis for me started with ABACAB, THEN I slowly worked my way backwards. I agree that Musical Box, Regenesis, etc are all fine reproductions but NOT the real thing and never will be.
Watch the original videos like BATACLAN to see them at their best and if you can get a copy listen to "Six of the Best" to hear the 1980's practice session and concert for WOMAD.(There's torrents up of it).
@cranie4 Man, you're crazy. I'm 51 and knew Genesis from 1973. Gabriel was Genesis soul. It sorta killed them when he left. Phil Collins was brave enough to take back the light and move on but their later compositions were so much more commercial it hasn't got anything to do with Genesis. Phil and friends have a talent of their own, but the real Genesis was with Peter Gabriel and you can still hear accents of it in his later songs.
So, please, don't say things like that. That's painful to read.
@cantabile03 Man you totally misunderstood my bad sentence structure ;) I SHOULD have said "My first exposure to Genesis was ABACAB and then I worked my way backwards"
I was in NO way stating anything prior to 75 was a lesser band. Pete pushed them to musical peak with Lamb. As you can hear with TOTT, the band relaxed a bit without his challenging them to do MORE. The jump in musical complexity from SEBTP to Lamb is staggering...almost like Tail should have been in between them.
@cranie4 I always thought Peter has sounded almost exactly the same from Genesis' first album all the way to the latest album of covers he's done. But even if he couldn't do it exactly the same as he used to that's, ok, he's 60 now, we all understand....we all just want a damn Genesis reunion!!!!!!
Finally they're inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame. FUSE Channel on March 15th 2010 LIVE from the Waldorf Astoria in NYC- DON'T MISS IT -- GENESIS LIVES FOREVER !!
I was there!!! As I remember, we went down the night before and slept in one of the catering tents. I'd gone without a coat (I was young!) but sadly I don't remember much about the actual concert, except that Peter Gabriel wore a flower outfit.
The best concert I have ever been too. Yes it was wet, but from the moment they came on stage the rain disappeared. Gabriel was superb. I wish I could get a copy of the video. I am a huge Queen fan & they were playing within a few weeks I think of this. Even though Freddie is no more I still wouldn't pass up this concert. Sorry Freddie!
You can find a Torrent of the gig on The Pirate Bay website, in fact there's two: The pictures from the programme are included. I got soaked through and almost cried when Hacket was introduced at the end, seven of the best. They didn't keep him poff the stage he just hadn't been at the rehersals at Hammersith Odeon so they didn't pressure him. I guess he didn't want to push himself forward until the end. I listened to it recently and just remember being thrilled throughout the whole performance.
Yes, a cold rainy day. We came from France and were there since dawn. What a wonderful day. One of my two most moving experience of all my life. With the crowd singing every line and yelling "yeah" when Peter sang "it's been a long long time" . From the beginning of Back in N-Y city to the end of Supper's ready, i was in a state of schock, shivering with tears running down my cheeks. I got the double cd but played it only twice. Can't give back the wonderful memory of this unique moment.
I have double CD of the show, not sure if this new version is different (mine was from the crowd) it was a great day, even though it pissed with rain all day
This is from the rehearsals for the show from the boards. I guess the only way you'd probably get a soundboard recording of the actual concert is when they release the soundboard recordings that they have at the Farm. And yes, they have the reunion concert as part of that too.
Oh god I would kill for being able to have actually SEEN this! Unfortunately I was -5 then. There must be video footage somewhere. They only keep it hidden. Why?! *cries*
pleaseeeeeeee i am begging you to give us just one link, many many people would like to have these rehearsels, please send the link!! p.ease then all will love you!!! thank you
YEP, it was an unbelievable show. I remember it well, but have not seen or heard anything from this one-off show since. The show's start was stunning - pall bearers brought Gabriel onto the stage in a white coffin, stood it upright and he popped out!!! It was wild. And yes, when Hackett came on near the end the place simply erupted!! The noise was deafening. And quite right too!! He should never have left. He could outplay Daryl with his little finger.
Apples to Oranges. Daryl's guitar style comes from a jazz foundation, while Hackett 's guitar style comes from classical guitar. They're both great players! I do prefer Hackett's Firth of Fifth solo though to the way Daryl plays it...Hackett owns that solo. Daryl's solo was great when he played it during their 2007 reunion tour, but if would of realized that with that particular solo for that particular song, less chops and scales actually has more of an impact.
Are you right pal.......Daryl is a great gifted one, from the jazz world (ponty, etc etc) but Hackett is the man....as you said, Hackett owns that solo...Daryl is a sesionist and it is ok!!!...but Hackett is the composer.....No chops, no licks, no outside scales, over jazzy progressions...but a lot of heart!!!!!
This was quite possibly the greatest concert experience I have ever had - the atmosphere was absolutely ELECTRIC - but when Hackett came on for the encores, the crowd went ECSTATIC!!!!! I was aware a bootleg audio recording of the concert was available in the mid 80s but haven't heard of anything recently - rumour has it Pete has the official video that was never relaeased somewhere at home.......
I still have a ticket from that, The program title was 'six of the best' it was a benefit concert to clear the debts of the first w.o.m.a.d festival held by Peter Gabriel, rumoured to be £1,000000. The special guests were Talk Talk and John Martyn, Steve Hackett only came on near to the end of the show having stood in the wings for most of the concert.
What was the real story with Steve? He was in South America and rushed to England and they tried to keep him off the stage? It seems like he was always treated very shabbily by the others. Steve is an amazing guitarist.
Wow! That's amazing. This should be the rarest of the rare footage of the one-off Genesis reunion (with Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett) in 1982! It sounds amazing. Have you really got the video as well?
i cant seem to download stuff from that website, i just get a zip folder with pictures and some text relating to the album in, where can ig et the sctual MP3's, i have tried unzipping these files but still nothing..i am at a loss as there is so much good matirial on there, many thanks.
I'm speechless. Such historical document finally found!. I really hope more tapes like this will see the light somewhen soon. At this point I'm pretty sure the gig was professionally recorded, at least the audio. It sounds great and gives me goose-bumps.
Genesis with Peter Gabriel is by far the best and most exciting incarnation of the band. An almost religious sensorial experience. The music, the live act, lyrics, theatrics, stories, costumes, concepts, etc. Those were the times.

People often comment on how Genesis changed, but just look at the huge numbers of people that this has allowed in to their realm.
Yes, Land of Confusion is a million miles away from Visions of Angels, but it's still a song you wouldn't hear any other band doing.
It's Genesis music, pure and simple.
Love to fans of all eras, but I just wanted to make that point.

Me too! I remember it vaguely, I think Gabriel asked the audience to remind him of the lyrics of an old Genesis song at one point, and they obliged.

I don't remember the songs they played either, but this is The Knife, of course, from Trespass.
