  • Hi Larry, I am wanting to change out the pickups in my Ibanez SZ320 to Dimarzio pups but I don't know what would sound the best for what I do. I play a lot of shred and neoclassical style music but also a fair amount of other styles... blues, classic rock, slide, etc. What would be a good pickup combination for this guitar ? I was thinking about going with a Dsonic and Air Norton Combo but I tend to play very fast a lot of the time and need something with good note separation and good gain.

  • do the signature pickups referred to in this video available in green?

  • @andfro192856

    Yes.

  • Hi Mr Dimarzio, I just received an Air Norton F spaced pickup as a gift (can't return it to the shop). However, my guitar does not have floating trem (it's a peavey wolfgang stoptail). I know the right pickup is the Standard/regular spaced pickup. I read that the strings won't line up perfectly with the poles if I install f-spaced to a non-trem guitar. Is this going to affect the tone produced by the pickup? or is this merely a cosmetic issue? Thank you in advance!

  • @thingstolisten

It isn't a cosmetic issue. A Wolfgang will work best with an F-spaced bridge pickup and a standard-spaced neck pickup. The E strings may align inside the E polepieces if you install this pickup in the neck position, and it is possible they will lose some output and tone as a result.

  • Mr. Dimarzio, I would just like to say thanks. I recently got the super distortion and the air norton for my PRS SE singlecut to replace the crappy pickups that were in it. My sound has improved SO much, they even handle low tunings well. So thanks a bunch for making awesome pickups!

    David

  • @moos3m4st3r96 HI, Thanks for your kind words and support.

    All the best,

    Larry DiMarzio

  • Hello Mr. Larry, I have question, I recently bought both Liquifire and Crunch Lab pickups and I have Ibanez RG350m but I am confused between installing the crunch lab with the bar facing the bridge or the neck. Which way do you recommend me to install the Crunch lab??

    Kind Regards,

    Abdulla

  • @HnterR

The standard direction is with the bar towards the neck.

  • Hi dear Larry. I noticed some tome difference between Tone Zone for 6 string and Tone Zone for 7 string.. is there any tone difference between crunch lab and liquifire for 6 and 7 string? Tnx.

  • @MorlowKing

There is very little difference between the 6 and 7-string versions of any of our models. However, there may be large differences between the acoustic perfomance of different guitars, and that is what you may have heard when comparing the TZ 6 and 7 models.

  • Hi Mr Larry,I have a 1997 Ibanez RG1202 basswood body with an Air Norton(neck) and Steve's Special(bridge) that has been used for 14 years when i bought it. I have played it for about 1 and 1/2 years and I recently realized that my tone for both pickups is thin and sharp, even with a significant amount of bass on my settings. Is this problem related to the pickups' aging or the guitar's electronics aging? If new pickups are required, would a LiquiFire(neck) and Super 3(bridge) be a good idea?

  • @d04bl3

It isn't possible to know if there's a problem with the pickups or the wiring without seeing the guitar, but pickups don't get brighter with age unless they're damaged. I can't say if a LiquiFire/Super 3 set is a good idea without knowing what you have in mind, but the Super 3 is a lot darker-sounding than the SS.

  • @LarryDiMarzio Thank you. I play some blues and lots of heavy rock and metal. I would love riffs going chugga chugga and solos sounding thick with a lot of sustain without sounding sterile or muddy. I also like clear sounding chords even with a lot of gain. My tone would be anything ranging from Metallica,Marty Friedman,Paul Gilbert,Slash,Synyster Gates. Would love to know your recommendations and whether they have to be f-spaced or not.

  • @d04bl3

Both pickups should be F-spaced. The set you are interested in might be a good choice, although it is always impossible to be 100% certain in advance.

  • hi Mr Larry, i as wondering, can you suggest a neck pick up to mount on my music man silhouette special that can quite get the tone of Petrucci, considering that the silhouette has a single coil slot at the neck, thanks

  • @VittorioSergi

An Air Norton S might get pretty close, if you have an amp that can also get this type of sound. A BC-1 might also be a good choice.

  • Hi Larry. I have a fender blacktop stratocaster alder body, maple fetboadrd/fingerboard i'm looking for pickups that i can play cleans, latin music but still play heavy metal and smooth solos. Would a D activator X and a liquifire be a good idea? Also shoud they be F-spaced or not? (sorry for my english im not very good)

  • @Guitar777Boy

This pickup combination should be OK if you have an amp with both good clean and overdrive channels. The LiquiFire should be standard-spaced, and the D-Ac X only comes in F-spacing.

  • @LarryDiMarzio Thank you.

  • hey larry, i was wondering if your in the process of making chris broderick his own signature series pickups? because i heard in an interview he was considering on getting in the process of it soon. dimarzio's are the best, no wonder chuck schuldiner from Death used em.

  • @xxsladedethxx

We did make pickups for Chris. Although we don't currently have plans to offer them for sale individually, they are in his signature Jackson guitar.

  • @LarryDiMarzio oh i see, larry have you ever talked personally with chuck schuldiner before he passed away? because he's mainly played a dimarzio x2n in his b.c rich stealth for the majority of death, i dont even think he used anything else, did he ever sign an endorsement with you?, if you have a story about chuck it would be cool if you can share it. im currently using an x2n, and its the heaviest darkest beefiest best sounding pickup ive ever used.

  • @xxsladedethxx

I didn't know Chuck personally. He never signed an endorsement with us, but he was a great player we all respected.

  • Larry I'm planning on installing an Evo 2 and a Liquifire in my Les Paul and I was think about using 1 megohm pots for the volume and 500k taps for the tone. Good idea? Bad idea? Thoughts? Also any ideas about what caps to use?

  • @theultimaterockr

1 meg is a little louder and brighter than 500K. Whether or not this is a good idea depends on your personal taste and the basic performance of your guitar. I've always like .022mFd caps, but this is also a matter of taste alone.

  • Wow, you actually get a response from Larry DiMarzio if you comment here!!! This is quite extraordinary to say the least.

  • hello sir Larry,

i've jeff loomis's signature schecter which have an ash body and maple neck..

i wonder how its sound, i'm gonna put crunch lab and liquifire. Is it pretty decent/good/great with the combination between pickups and ash body ?

    any better suggestions? thanks!!

  • @naochiMalmsteen

Pickup choices are always a matter of personal taste, regardless of the type of wood. These pickups can perform well with your guitar, but it is impossible to be certain in advance that they will do exactly what you want.

  • @LarryDiMarzio

Hi Larry. I'm using a jackson dinky. Alder body, rose fingerboard etc... I'm thinking to change my pickups. I'm gonna put cruchlab and liquifire. is this a great idea ? what do you think ?

  • @hekofali

They should work well in your guitar, but whether or not they are the best choices depends on the sound you are looking for.

  • Hi Larry,

    This is regarding f-spaced/standard spacing.

I have a Ibanez RG1570 and I intend to replace the two humbuckers. Do I need a f-spaced pickup in the neck as well as the bridge? or just a standard spaced humbucker in the neck and a f-spaced in the bridge?

    Thanks in advance.

  • @camnz123

You will get the best results with F-spaced pickups in both positions.

  • i swear petrucci looks so much better with short hair

  • I want a pair of dimarzio evolution pickups and a single coil evolution for my ibanez rg350 with an edge 3 tremolo but i looked online and I found there was f spaced evolution pickups that go with guitars that have tremolo and regular evolution pickups, and now I dont know what to getget

  • @41x3r Hi, F spaced humbuckers will line up better with your bridge.

    All the best,

    Larry DiMarzio

  • ok i am customizing a guitar im putting a dimarzio evolution in the bridge and i need something 4 the neck and these are the options i can choose from are

    liquidfire

    air nortion

    the breed

    any suggestions

  • @forevermetal34

It isn't possible to choose one without knowing what type of sound you are looking for. Please email us at tech@dimarzio.com with the description of the sound you have in mind.

  • Hey guys I really need help. I have Mexican Fender Stratocaster which i absolutely love. I play anything from animals as leaders to Metallica, to Avenged Sevenfold to blues etc on it. I Mainly play metal like Metallica, pantera and led zep etc bands. I went to guitar shops and i haven't yet played a guitar which for me matches my fender. I started looking into pickups for my fender. It has a humpbucker in the bridge position. Which pickups would u guys recommend me? Should I put 2 humpbuckers?

  • @IIBlackoftheNightII

We need more information in order to offer useful recommendations. Please email tech@dimarzio.com with a description of how you want the sound to be different from the sound of the original pickups.

  • @IIBlackoftheNightII Try the Jackson RR3, its about $800, but mine can play the most beautiful cleans, amazing blues, and heavy metal. The best way to say it is I can play the acoustic part, and guitar solo to Stariway to Heaven, then follow with Enter Sandman, which I do, then to Crazy Train, then Pride and Joy. WARNING: it has a floyd rose, it is amazing, no complaints, but it is not a good guitar for multiple tunings.

  • So I just read today that JP recorded Images and Words with a ToneZone in the bridge position as opposed to the Steve Special that he started using for the live tour in support of that album. Is this true? It makes a lot of sense actually.

Did he use the Speve's Special for recording Scenes from a Memory? Images, Scenes, and Turn are my favorite tones from him, and the Crunch Lab seems to work well for replicating all of them pretty well.

  • I HAVE A QUESTION... WHAT PICKUPS DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR AN IBANEZ S SERIES AND WHY???

  • @JeffLoomis2244

It's impossible to recommend specific pickups based solely on the guitar. We can recommend pickups if you email us at tech@dimarzio.com with a description of the sound you are looking for.

  • 3:49 God Mode, 3:52 sup bro, 3:59 Ayyyy (in italian voice), 4:05 Killzone mode: ACTIVATE,

  • The biggest difference is in the amp pick up's and speakers used.very minimal difference has to do with the guitar it self.

  • @jayou812a

Different guitars can produce very different results. It isn't just a matter of tone - some guitars sustain better than others, and some are louder acoustically than others. These things can be important to the total sound.

  • @LarryDiMarzio I'm sure that may be true to a certain extent.I have a fender squier bought it new for 200.00 (made in indonesia)

not the best wood products went into the guitar.I placed one DiMarzio dp 155 and with my amp and speaker combination can get sustain, feedback on demand. Also because I matched the speaker magnets with the magnet in the pick up I get amazing tone, raw power.I have expensive guitars and did it for experimental purposes found minimal difference.

  • yeah, I just installed the Crunch Lab (B) + Tone Zone S (N) and I really liked the sound.

  • @LarryDiMarzio Could it be safe to say, then, that the D-Sonic has a slightly more "individualized" tone, based on the player? I know several who have played the CL and have come remarkably close to the Petrucci bridge pickup tone; the D-Sonic, on the other hand, seemed to show more of each unique player's tone.

  • @dabenson8r

I don't think so. They're different pickups, and neither has more personality than the other.

  • Hello Larry, Im looking for a new neck and bridge pickup for my alder bodied jackson. for the bridge pickup i want something hot and very crunchy for rhythm like the crunch lab, but at the same time have the midrange and bite and scream the evos have for solos. d sonic w/bar towards the bridge maybe? for the neck i want a humbucker that will get me close to the bubbly sound of yngwie malmsteen. i play standard tuned melodic death metal through a peavey valveking with a ts9 tubescreamer.

  • @LarryDiMarzio Since the D-Sonic and the Crunch Lab are very similar in ways, is there an instance where the D-Sonic may still be a better choice than the Crunch Lab, or is the Crunch Lab even more applicable in every situation?

  • @dabenson8r

The CL isn't necessarily better than the DS for all players and all guitars. The D-Sonic isn't obsolete, and a lot of players still like it today. I can't say which situations it might be better in, because player tastes don't follow a set formula.

  • hey larry i have a question for you...i really want these pickups ..i want to buy them for my fender contemporary strat 1985 ...the guitar has two humbuckers in it right now do you think i can just swap them out easy with these?

  • @illchild316

Yes, but it will probably be best to have it done professionally if you have no previous installation and wiring experience.

  • hey Larry, i'm thinking of putting crunch lab and liquifier in my schecter. only problem is that it has a tune 0 matic bridge and all i see on musicians friends is f spaced pickups. are there regular spaced sets?

  • @xlambxofxruinx

You should get the best results in your guitar with an F-spaced bridge pickup and a standard-spaced neck pickup. Musician's Friend can order it in either spacing.

  • Hey Larry or anyone who knows: need a new bridgepupmy LP STD 04.

I now have the Norton/LiquiFire combo. I love both the pickups, especially the neckpup, but feel that i need something hotter for the bridge . So im looking at the crunch lab but wonder how it'd hold up in a heavy mahogany/maple gtr like the LP? Any experience with that? These are the ones i focused on:

    Tonezone: to bassy for LP?

    D Activator/activator X? to much EMG?

    Crunch Lab?

  • @plcolsson

A D Activator bridge model should be good. The tone is something like an EMG, but the feel & response is much different.

  • @LarryDiMarzio Hey Larry, I'm planning on buying an Ibanez RG7321 and I'm wondering... should I replace the stock pickups with a D Sonic in the bridge? or a Crunch lab? Or maybe something else entirely? I play mostly metal with sounds akin to Nevermore, Dream Theater, and All That Remains, by the way.

  • @Bludhoundz8

A Crunch Lab might be best.

  • @LarryDiMarzio Hey Larry, I am planning to buy an Ibanez RG321MH. On the neck is going to be the Air Norton. I havent quite decided what I want on the bridge. The style of music that I play is progressive metal/rock and heavy metal. Stuff like Dream Theater, Rush, and a little of Avenged Sevenfold. I really want a really tight sound with some good crunch but not that much distortion. I play in all sorts of tunings like drop tunings and very low tunings. What pickup(s) would be a good choice?

  • @xXxglassgowdreamxXx

An F-spaced Evolution neck model might be good. It isn't as loud as the bridge model, so the sound will not be as distorted.

  • @LarryDiMarzio Does the Evolution neck have a good rythm sound, kinda like a John Petrucci sound?

  • @xXxglassgowdreamxXx

It fits the description of what you are looking for. I don't think that's exactly like John's sound, but you do not have the same guitar.

  • Is that guitar small, or is John a pretty big guy?

  • @SuperGuitarMark John is a really big guy.

He's been gymming for years, and years now. idk how long, but he's been doing it because he feels that it liberates his technical ability.

  • @SuperGuitarMark John is like 5'9-10" but he's a big boy haha!

  • I bought my first Dimarzio pickup yesterday, it was the DP182 "Fast Track 2" which I installed on my MIM stratocaster and I love it to death. Killer sound AND no hum. Only downside was the price as here in the Philippines, we have to pay for shipment and tax on top of the original market price. At least it was worth it.

Hail to the king of pickups!

  • Larry, I am building my own custom super strat with a HSH set up. The body is 3 piece swamp ash, maple neck that is scalloped with medium jumbo nickel frets. What PUPS would you recommend for the bridge and neck? I am looking for humbuckers with great harmonics and note articulation that can wail. Your input would help tremendously.

  • @duck2587

A little more info is needed. Please email us at tech@dimarzio.com and let us know whether you want high or medium-output pickups & what type of amp you play.

  • I have to agree with some post below me larry! we mean it thank you for everything you guys have done over the years! im in the process of switching out this crappy stock neck pickup in my esp 7 string for a liquifire 7 and it already has a d-sonic which I am in love with!! soon enough I'll most likely be using your pickups almost exclusively with the exception of a couple guitars that have EMG 81s in em

  • Larry if you're reading this. I would like to thank you for every thing you do. I have so much respect for people like you and Paul Reed smith, who are so dedicated to what they do. I saved up for a PRS and I was actually skeptical about swapping the pickups out for a JP Set. But I eventually ordered them, since I live in Pakistan it was tough to find a luthier who could replace the pickups. But it eventually worked out. And the guitar sounds amazing. Thankyou! Keep doing what you guys do best.

  • @ntbillie

Thank you. Your comments are greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Larry, My guitar is a HSS set up, and I was going to install the Crunch Lab in the bridge, as for the single coils I'm looking for something nice and thick sounding but still clear. I was thinking about putting in the Injectors, but I want to know what your opinion would be. Your the man! - Steven

  • @KMD861

Depending on the specific guitar, you might check out a Chopper in the neck and middle. They have a little more power than the Injector and might balance better with the CL.

  • @LarryDiMarzio Thanks for responding! I will check it out for sure :)

  • I have the Petrucci DiMarzio Crunch Labs in 3 of my favorite guitars and the two guitars with humbucker sized pickups have Dimarzio Liquifires. The third has the Billy Corgan BC-1 Dimarzio single coil sized humbucker. I started with one Crunch Lab pickup and it sounded so good that I ended up with all DiMarzios in 3 guitars. The biggest surprise for me was how much the harmonics jump out and sing with the Liquifires. I didn't know it was possible to get that out of a neck pickup. Thank you!!!

  • @kidsTeachGuitar2kids Hi, Thanks for your kind comments.

    All the best,

    Larry DiMarzio

  • Larry, I'm looking for a really mellow, dark sounding pickup to go into my neck position. I have a 2009 Ibanez RG3570Z. The body is made of basswood, and currently it's got the Air Norton in the neck, and the Tone Zone in the bridge. What do you suggest?

  • does f spaced refer to floyd AND hardtail/fender style bridges? im building a guitar with a hardtail style bridge and i decided i want the crunchlab liquifire set for it, but i cant decide which spacing to choose for it ahaha

  • @larrydimarzio ..hi i recently installed a crunch lab in the bridge in my ibanez ...however the sound is sooooo muddy!! any ideas what might be wrong

  • @AnDr3vV7

Every combination of guitar, pickup and amplifier has its own specific sound. I have no way of knowing if anything is wrong without hearing your setup, but you might try reducing the gain and bass response on your amp as a starting point. You might also email us at tech@dimarzio.com with the specific Ibanez model you have, so we can send the correct diagram to make sure the pickup is wired correctly..

  • Larry...I have a D Sonic in my Washburn MG30 (my #1 guitar). I LOVE it!!! I am wondering what you did different with the Crunch Lab as is compared to the original D Sonic in their technical aspects?

  • @ducky811

Sorry, but this comes under the heading of "secret sauce". The technical differences will have to remain confidential.

  • @LarryDiMarzio I totally understand. Just thought I would inquire. Thanks anyway for responding Larry.

  • Larry what would be a warmer sounding neck pickup or a 24 fret maple/rosewood neck. a "breed" or "air norton"? thanks!

  • @Shoji86

The Air Norton has more bass and is a little warmer overall.

  • Hi guys. I was wondering if its possible to install the F-Spaced D Activator set in my PRS SE Paul Allender. It doesn't have floating bridge, Thanks a lot!!

  • @ChaOverture

Yes. It shouldn't be a problem. However, I think you will get best results with a standard-spaced neck pickup and F-spaced bridge pickup.

  • @LarryDiMarzio Thanks a lot for the hint. I play lead guitar in a thrash metal band (inspired by Destruction, Testament, Lamb Of God, etc). Do you recommend these D Activators or do we have a better set for it?

  • @ChaOverture

Pickup choice is completely personal, but the D Activators are a very good first choice.

  • whats teh intro song called?

  • Hi Larry, i've been doing a ton of research on pickups for my new guitar, and was really interested in the FRED DP153 for the neck on a solid Mahogany body/neck with Rosewood fretboard. I can't find many vids on the FRED for the neck, was wondering your input on it. If it helps, the guitar is an Ibanez SZ520QM.

  • @FKNhostile187

I haven't seen any good vids with a Fred in the neck, but it's a good neck pickup if you want something that's a little hotter and has more mids than a typical vintage humbucker.

  • hi Lary im planning to but pickups for my les paul 1960 vos im looking for a versatile pickups (bridge and neck) good for jazz metal and fusion

  • larry, I like to play fast melodic shredding but at the same time modern hardcore metal riffs. i want something with very tight lows, but have the high strings still be warm, clean and not too harsh. what pickups would you reccomend?

  • larry, i'm debating over if i should get the d activators, evolution pickups, or the crunchlab and liquifire. I like to play fast melodic shredding but at the same time modern hardcore metal riffs. i want something with very tight lows, but have the high strings still be warm, clean and not too harsh. what pickups would you reccomend? also if the d activators are the right choice, what would a good neck pickup be besides the d activator neck? thanks

  • @MikeBassil

A D Activator bridge pickup could be the right choice. The neck pickup could be a LiquiFire, Evolution neck model or Breed neck model.

  • hey larry i have a pair of ealry 80s super distortion pups- I am trying to figure out how much they are worth; can you help me out?

  • @jacktheguitarman

Sorry, but this is not something I can state authoritatively. You might be able to get a good idea of current prices by seeing what similar pickups are going for on ebay.

  • @jacktheguitarman Hi, I'm sorry but I don't know anything about the vintage prices for DiMarzio Super Distortions. Try checking ebay.

    All the best,

    Larry DiMarzio

  • Hello mr Larry! i have just ordered the DP158-159 and the ICV2 evolution pickups based on some reviews on the youtube. i have an ibanez 370dx and i want to play with high gain and stuff like Steve Vai, Satriani, Petrucci e.t.c. Have i done the right thing ordering these pickups or no??? Thank you!

  • @ShootingStarsBand

Pickup choices are always personal, so I cannot promise these are the best choices. They were designed for high-gain and many players are happy with them for this type of music, so there is a good chance you will like them as well.

  • HI Larry, i have a Ibanez RG with Emg's in it. However iam thinking of switching the Pickups with some Dimarzio Pickups. I play progressive death metal and the part where the Emg's suck is the clean parts.

So would you recommend me the Crunch lab/ Liquifire Pickup combination?

    Or a different one?

    Thanks a lot

  • I didn't know what video would be most appropriate so I just picked this...

What advice would you give to someone like me who has a lot of interest and passion for pickups and tone in general but doesn't know where to start in making a career or even a hobby out of pickup?

Is there a place to apply for any internship or part time job at DiMarzio?

  • Hello Larry, i have a ibanez rg guitar with a tone zone in the bridge and a paf pro in the neck, i was looking to replace the paf pro with a strat type pickup, that i could play my fast shreding stuff with clarity, with that rob marcello type tone, but also that i could play slow blues and low gain stuff, a little bit like andy timmons tone, which pickup would you recommend?

    Thanks a lot.

  • @Carlosgtrsnk

A Chopper should be a good choice.

  • Mr. DiMarzio, is there anything like a PAF Pro for a 7 string guitar? I love the sound of the PAF Pro, but I would really like to know if there is such a pickup for a 7 string like that you offer!

  • @Shredalist

We aren't currently offering a 7-string version of the PAF Pro. The closest-sounding model is the PAF 7.

  • @LarryDiMarzio Ok, thank you for the advice!

  • He Speaks Like Jesus Christ, it echoes! LOL

  • hello mr.dimarzio i have an epiphone les paul running throught a vox vt30 and im deciding which pickup im getting for the neck pickup.ive narrowed down to breed neck and liquifire.which do you think will be better for my guitar?

  • @ironzoeg123

I think a LiquiFire would be better.

  • is that guitar just small or is he huge?

  • @healthlevelseven I was thinking the same thing :)

  • Hi Mr.DiMarzio! I have a alder strat and I'm going to change pickups. In the brigde I would like a pickup that sounds tight, has a pretty high output and is not to bright and not to muddy. In the neck, a nice warm, loud pickup would be nice. I have looked at Evolutions and they seem like the right choice, what do you think Mr.Dimarzio?

  • Mr. Dimarzio! I have a les paul... and I want to put the dimarzio X2N in the Bridge position... what is the best combination in the neck position?

  • @mingoos4294

Please email tech@dimarzio.com with a description of the sound you wnat to achieve in the neck position. There is no single best combination that suits all players.

  • @LarryDiMarzio Larry, theres a lot of hot debate going on about steve vais pickups in the green meanie on the movie crossroads. We know he swapped to PAF Pros at some point, but the movie was made/developed before a public release of your pickups. Was steve vai involved with making that pickup? And what was the exact model he used for the movies tone?

Thank you very much for any assistance you can provide us! :p

  • @JgHaverty

He wasn't involved in the development of the PAF Pro, but it was in several of his guitars before the first JEM was released. Sorry, but I'm not certain which pickups were used on the Crossroads soundtrack.

  • @LarryDiMarzio thank you so much for your time! :)

  • @LarryDiMarzio Mr. Dimarzio, I have two questions I hope you could help me with. First off, I'm planning on putting a Crunch Lab/LiquiFire combination in my Ibanez RG1570 Prestige guitar with an Edge Pro tremolo. Do I need the F spacing or the regular model? Second, what single coil do you think would best compliment these two pickups? (As in the 2 and 4 pickup switches.)

  • @cdgriffin88

    1) Both pickups should be F-spaced. 2) A True Velvet middle pickup (DP175S).

  • @LarryDiMarzio Mr. DiMarzio!

    hello! :D

  • Thank you guys I received the diagram , I look forward to received the pickups !! you did a good job think you again

  • @BlackjackLead

Assumptions about the sound of a guitar that hasn't been built yet don't always prove correct, but John's current bridge pickup (the Crunch Lab) might do pretty well.

  • Hi !

Plz i have a question i want to buy this pickups i have a "ibanez Rg" can they worck good with this pickup or not ? and what about instaation ?

  • @ahchouch

They should work well in an Ibanez. Email us at tech@dimarzio.com with your exact RG model and we will send you the correct wiring diagram.

  • @ahchouch

They work very well in an Ibanez RG. If you need a wiring diagram, email tech@dimarzio.com with the exact RG model you have.

  • Crunch Lab and Liquifire are very interesting pickups. I installed them in my RG Prestige and they are just awesome. CL is high output, but somehow very hi-fi-ish, not too bright to make it harsh, never too muddy and slightly scooped mids to prevent it from sounding "boxy". Liquifire is best for singing leads, but does clean up nicely. It's great that it's not too powerful - just enough to match CL, but low enough to make it touch sensitive. Congrats for making these great pickups!

  • Larry man, I need some help!

What would be your best single-single coil pickups for the most less HUM and the biggest/fattest joe bonamassa-ish blues tone?:)

I would love to hear from you!

  • @Stratozenfan

It depends on the guitar. If it's a stock Strat, you should check out a Tone Zone S or a BC-2.

  • @Stratozenfan gilberts new dimarzio injectors

  • thumbs up if petrucci looks like jesus in the second last photo!

  • Very cool clip!!

Thanks Larry, for posting this, it is very much appreciated!

  • if it had a 25 1/2 scale length i would already own the jpx

  • Larry i have the first peavey EVH wolfgang model and i'm thinking of putting petruccis custom pick-ups in it. Do you think that would be a good idea?

  • @Eddielovemuse90

The Liquifire shouldn't create difficulties, but there might be a small problem with the Crunch Lab, because it is taller than the original pickup, and it will probably be necessary to rout the pickup cavity a little deeper to install it.

We can send you a diagram showing the height difference if you email the request to tech@dimarzio.com

  • @LarryDiMarzio

Larry I have a Breed bridge pickup on my ibanez rg 1550 prestige. Problem is, too much gain! Hows Petruccis pickups compared to breed "Gain-ness" wise? and do you it would be a good fit for an Ibanez (F spaced). Thanks Larry!

  • @blekidud

You should be able to reduce the gain by adjusting the pickup further from the strings. The Crunch Lab is louder than the Breed, so it's probably not a good choice. You would probabl do bette with an F-spaced AT-1 or a Mo' Joe.

  • Hey Larry, I am putting some dimarzio's in my Ibanez Prestige RG1420 and I have decided that I am going to put the Steve's Special in the Bridge but I am stuck between the Air Norton and the Humbucker From Hell in the neck...I have an Air Norton in another guitar and it is a great pickup but I have heard that the Humbucker from Hell is a lot smoother and that it gets great clean tones. Which one would you reccomend?

  • @apophis135

The HFH is a lot brighter than the Air Norton, and not at all as smooth. It's really good for clean sounds, but probably not as useful for solos.

  • Mr. DiMarzio, I was wondering if these pickups would make an average 400 dollar guitar (ltd viper 50) sound a lot better, or if it would not really be worth putting in, and i should just get a new guitar?

  • im choosing between an evolution vs a crunch lab on the bridge on my les paul, can anybody give some advice? thnks

  • @kalimoncho51 Crunch Lab is more of a metal rythm pickup. I have never played a guitar with an evolution but from my knowledge they have less output and are more of lead pickups. I think this is accurate but I'm not 100% sure so don't trust me:)

  • Mr DiMarzio please help me... I'm getting my guitar to my luthier tomorrow to have new pickups built in. I definately want to go for DiMarzios, but I'd like to hear your opinion. Which passive pickup do you recommend for an LTD EC-100 (into the bridge position, basswood body, maple top, fixed bridge instrument)? I'm searching for a good, heavy yet articulate sound for riffing. As of now, I think of the Breed. What's your opinion please?

  • Larry, I'm ready to get some dimarzios in my 2008 Gibson LP studio. As far as spacing goes, what would your recommend. F-spaced for both or just the bridge?

  • @BOOLsheet

Just the bridge. The neck pickup should be standard spacing.

  • Hi Mr. DiMarzio, I was wondering what pick ups that JP used last 2005 at The Score Live Concert on "Raise The Knife" and "The Spirit Carries on". Thanks!

  • @bEnNiSe

Sorry, but I don't know. This is a question that John or his guitar tech might have the answer to.

  • lol, the master has spoken...i am buying these pickups!

  • OMFG new solo album... this has made my day

  • Hi, I have a question about modding an Ibanez RG1570. I love it, it is fast and comfortable. Now, being a fan of Petricci's sound I am interested in his pickups. Is it possible to put these two humbuckers and get rid of my single coil at the center and maybe put something to cover the hole? I rarely use it, it sounds good for clean sounds but it makes a lot of noise. Also, it has a 5 way switch, would it be possible to turn it into a 3 way? Thanks.

  • @Aristowi

Yes to both questions. Both pickups should be F-spaced (DP227F and DP228F). You can remove the middle pickup and turn the stock 5-way into a 3-way, if you're OK with positions 2, 3 and 4 all doing the same thing. You could also install a 3-way switch. Email us at tech@dimarzio.com if you need assistance with either wiring diagram.

  • @LarryDiMarzio Thanks for taking the time and answer our questions. I already downloaded the diagrams from your website, but I will certainly send you an email in case I need help in the future.

  • @LarryDiMarzio Hi Mr. DiMarzio, I was wondering what pick ups that JP used last 2005 at The Score Live Concert on "Raise The Knife" and "The Spirit Carries on". Thanks!

  • Ive been a long time user of emg 81/85 pups. And for certain applications still use them. However,i have to say that i am presently using the CL/LF combo in my main axe and i adore them. There very "alive" feeling with a nice vocal quality.Super smooth with lots of gain.I plan on changing MOST of my guitars to these pups. There just perfect!!!

  • @CHAMP28K

Glad to hear you like them, but I should point out that these models (like many of our pickups) will respond differently in different guitars, so I wouldn't expect you to get identical results from all of your instruments.

  • @LarryDiMarzio hey i have started building guitars (for myself) i play mostly fusion, funk, and progressive rock. i have heard from others that many dimarzios are sensitive to wood choice. but i want to hear from you if these pick ups would probably sound good in a guitar thats pretty much a PRS Hollowbody II. If not which ones would you suggest? if so what kind of tone? i am generally looking for a timbre similar to Petruccis, i do kno amp choice and play style make a large difference. Thanx!

  • @mdvo5

There's no reason they shouldn't sound good in this guitar, although it is impossible to know in advance how any pickup will perform in a custom-made instrument.

  • "Dream Theater will be in the studio in January, of 2011, to begin work on our next album, so I'm really excited about that."

I wish that excitement could be shared with Mike Portnoy as well :'(

Nonetheless, I'm excited for Dream Theater's 11th album either way. Rock on, DT!
