All ancient stories are at least rooted in some bit of truth, most likely this story is 100% true, as that there is nothing implausible about it. Since kava can only be cultivated by the transfer of stock or root cuttings most likely in the turning over of soil to bury his sister a small bit of stem or root was mixed in, and thus had a chance to grow. I grow kava and drink it but have never once lost memory, it is known for relaxing the body and not the mind unlike other plants.
kava is ok but its bad for your liver, mulungu is a great replacement it feels very similar and its like $5 an oz on eBay its a good deal plus its legal everywhere
Ok this documentary about Kava focosus only in Vanuatu and it is more of a story then history. In Fiji, we have our own version of how Kava/Yaqona was introduced and the importance of it in our socities. I bet the Tongan & Samoan also have their own version of the story. This is all somewhat called folkfore of the Pacific. No real evidence to support its history.
@22871987@22871987 Thanks for your comment! What you see here is only a part of a 90 minute film. It was aired by Fiji 1 in 1998 and by German TV in 2000. It deals with kava use in Vanuatu, Fiji and Samoa and also includes the process of turning kava into a drug in Germany. A myth is never an account of history. It explains how things come into being. If you want history, read Vincent Lebots excellent book on Kava! Bula, Thorolf
@arcadiafilm I think i will stick to the story that was told to us by my Fijian teacher in High School. It explains the origin, the use, why us, who came up with it, the idea, its use and so forth. You should try and visit the Fijian Learning Centre in USP or the Ministry of Information or Achives Fiji for great documents and history of Fiji & the Pacific.
@22871987 The idea of history having to be "accurate" is relatively recent. Consider that the Samoan word for 'history' is tala—the word also means news, account, story and myth. These stories are not meant to be accurate accounts, they are mythologies that preserve history alongside with cultural values in a form that can be passed on through the generations (much like childrens' stories). And their value shouldn't be underestimated...you can tell a lot about a culture based on their stories.
Do your homework and buy from a reputable source. Preferably from Hawaii or any of the pacific islands. When a decent strain is prepared PROPERLY, the effects are wonderfully pleasant.
@siwooot A myth is never an account of true history anyway, but rats arrived in the Pacific in the course of human migration long before Europeans arrived. Check "Polynesian Rat" in Wikipedia.
The roots and the stems are used. They are dried and then pounded into a dry powdery pulp. The Powder is then mixed in water and then strained, leaving a liquid containing extracts of the powder. It's Murky in color because of he fact that the powder is brown. Kava has a very earthy smell and flavor, sightly peppery and strong (depending on the strength of the mix). It;s a mild narcotic but does not have insidious side effects. It is relaxing will lead to grogyness if consumed in large amounts.
The lateral roots contain the most kavalactones. The crown roots (large chunk) contain less but still contain some kavalactones. Kava powder that only contains lateral roots is called "Waka" grade & is the best of the best. Stay away from any part of the plant that is above ground, b/c it causes liver damage. To grind the rotts you can use a blender or food processor. I use a magic bullet...
@roodeeet wow, so you think marijuana users are "retards"? and you listen to the likes of slayer? why don't you take your unbelievably uneducated and bruised brain and do some research on Dr. Emoto. You, who are listening to metal and shit like that are truly (it's proven, look it up) retarded and completely fucked up. just like every single person who listens to that pile of faggot shit.
@roodeeet Marijuana is a beautiful thing that relaxes and doesnt negatively effect your brain unless you were already a fuck up in the first place a person is who they are. things just enhance who we truly are, and i'm guessing you tried weed and discovered you were completely useless and now you try to avoid that truth with "death metal shit''. drop the shit and become an actual intellectual human being. right now you're mind is as fucked up as hitler's.
@WhoaKaela Cannabis does not kill brain cells it only temporarily slows down blood flow to the brain, Alcohol on the otherhand as well as tobacco Kill brain cells
@roodeeet don't believe me? once again do some travelling open a couple of books and tabs in your firefox and start becoming who we all are truly supposed to be. let me guess, you're from the north?

Does anyone know if you use all the roots, or just the larger tubers/ how do you grind them?

All parts of the roots, tuber and rhizomes, are used!

I acquired 2 pounds of Vanuatu lateral root kava kava recently. I must say I enjoy it. It certainly is a plant of peace. ;-))

Well, I downloaded via a torrent, the first and second album by sacred spirit, unfortunately the track in the documentary is not represented.
So if anyone knows the name of the "artist - song" played at the intro, please do let me know as I think its lovely.
;-)

i don't know about the original but this exact version is used on the beginning of Pat Metheny's 'Secret Story' album.
I remember this from a few years ago & am pretty sure the details of this tune are on the sleeve notes.
kazuko32 2 years ago
yes, 'above the treetops' on secret story by Pat Metheny.
