They are great players! I do agree with another post that Robben gets overlooked, because it's hard to handle his vocals sometimes. He is an awesome guitarist, they both are!
I usually ignore titles like these but I'm glad I clicked on this one! Anyone who does not enjoy this clearly has never played guitar. Thanks for turning me on to these guys!
No, that's "BRILLIANT", music!! We could ALL go on about who the best are &/or were. Fact is, if you can only name a handful, I sincerely feel sorry that your ears & soul have only experienced such a limited library of amazing music & guitar players that's out there!! Anyone that doesnt find these two players even by themselves, anything short of "Brilliant", your obviously not a player or musician. Or, your just plain lyin!!lol
Very good stuff. I don't know if "the best" is the term to label them because there is some incredible talent in the world, so it is subjective. But these guys are deliciously awesome! I could listen to them on an instrumental level all day long. Thanks for posting. The other video is very good as well. Post more!
Actually my credits would also go to the musicians comping the solos in the background. After all musical genius is great, but the two, like every other artist on stage would need a solid backbone and some inspiration from within the band. And don't they contribute a lot to the sound that makes these recordings so remarkably broad appreciated?
I get the feeling someone went to G.I.T. to post something this. I went to M.I. 25 yrs. ago and i used to see these guys doing seminars in these little class rooms you had to sign up in order to get to see them. I recognize the name Robben Ford from my early 20's. I think my brother must've had an album or something. @monkeys350 I think you are wrong. Every one of the great players mentionned here, are great because they have a unique tone and feel. These 2 players are great and I respect you thinking they are the best. Everybody has their favourite players. But saying these are the best... I don't think they are
@gungoe Well I don't think these guys are the best, I just don't like that people are coming on here just to list guitarists who they think are better. It's pretty immature and disrespectful to the musicians. This music is great, but people are too occupied with their opinions on guitarists who they believe are better then to enjoy it.
Its a risky statement to say they are the best players ever... there are a lot of great players. They obviously play amazing. But they wont be in my top 5 :-).
Buddy guy, Rory Gallagher, Clapton (I wasnt a big fan of his but after cream, deric and the dominos, playing with the band... waw he's great), Chet atkins!, jimmy page (if only because i'm a zeppelin fan, but he made some of the best music ever, so he's in my top 5)
@nckey42 yeah sorry man but sincerely yngwie was in my opinion one of the most talented people to ever pick up a guitar, buthe didnt really have the spirit of it like them oldschool guys right there.
@MultiGrandiose yngwie malmsteen just plays really fast. he plays scales and arpeggios with no class or style. he is a great guitar player, but these guys are great musicians
AWESOME! Listened this album the whole day through and i thank my lucky stars that i found this full album for free download at DownloadMusic[.]im , .
Was that a slight or a compliment? Anyway, hearing this again is great. Always loved Robben Ford. Carlton ain't bad either. Drummers groovin' too. Nice and loose, but right in the pocket.
People don't recognize Robben for the Guitar God he is because they are unable to get past the vocals on his albums. If this guy went straight instrumental , itunes would crash trying to fulfill all the requests for downloads. Meanwhile , Larry plays with all the technical brilliance of Al Di Meola, and the fire of Mclaughlin...but with a heart quality those artists lack. These guys together on stage with no vocals is freakin AWESOME.
EQ... right on. You gotta be a jazzer to fully understand how these guys think and phrase. Brilliant stuff... which is why they are who they are... PLUS they have built a brand that is recognized around the world. Tone, approach, vocabulary, personality, etc.
I could be wrong but it is interesting that there seems to be some kind of "who can play the most outside" going on with Larry after Robben's brilliant playing. Did Larry succeed?
As soon as people start using the "best ever" label, I tune out. I have seen all of the players mentioned and none of them is my favorite. I have heard many, many guitarists in my life and if there is a such a thing as the best ever, chances are you have never heard of him or her.
fallen, you must have fallen on your head. Man are you nuts or what. Clapton is ok not great, Carlo's is distinctive but not the best by far. Clapton is more known because he has a great voice and plays rock and pop. These guys are master guitarist.
Please READ the comments thoroughly. I never said Clapton was the greatest guitar player & I own one Santana record. The video is entitled "best guitarists ever". There is no "best" guitarist. Some guy says I don't understand what they are doing. I've seen Robben Ford 3 times standing 2 feet from him with Chick Corea's drummer & Eric Johnson's bass player. He is a wonderful guitarist. Many great guitarists are unknown, don't tour or have cd's to sell. So what? Don't argue about it just enjoy it.
Well I dont know . Ford yes a pretty uncomfortable solo but great , larry larry larry leave the drummer alone and get on . love listening to larry on records but when I watch him at these performances I dont get the same buzz at all .
oh, pul-EEZE. Clapton and Santana? Yes, Clapton is a master at what he does, but not even his biggest fans see him as the greatest guitarist in the world. And...Santana? I'd love you to show me ANYTHING he's done that's truly great. He has "a sound", no doubt...but he's neither technically proficient nor a creative soloist. His gift has been making some pretty cool songs that feature guitar solos. But there are tons of guitarists that are more impressive than Carlos.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
These guys are good no doubt and get better all of the time..but the greatest in thinking NOT. none of them can hold a candle next to clapton or carlos santana
No one claimed Robben Ford and Larry Carlton are the greatest in thinking. I believe the poster insinuated these two are the greatest guitar players, in the poster's opinion of course.
2 masters of the guitar at work here folks .. everyone has their personal faves but this is not a contest .. this is 2 players who have the utmost respect for each other ... too say one is better than the other is too miss the more important fact ... THIS IS MUSIC played by real musicians and my only regret is I haven't seen either L.C or R.F in concert.
And for anyone who is hearing Larry Carlton for the first time I recommend you listen to his first 5 solo albums ..the guy can shred !!!
You are too young to talk sh-t. Voting age is 18. I saw Robben Ford in 1992 in a small bar and he smoked. Satriani, Jeff Beck and Prince are up there as great guitarists. Yes, Prince. Stay in school in kid and keep playin'. It is a subjective thing people, not objective. No one is the best drummer, bassist, guitarist. You like them or you don't. Watch and listen to Prince play the solo on While my Guitar Gently Weeps and tell me he's not one of the greatest.
IOne of my favorite songs is Black Magic Woman. Peter Green wrote that song. Indeed he is a great guitaris but no one in the world can claim to be the best at any instrument. I have seen Santana in my neighborhood back home in Marin County but never saw him perform live. He was shopping w/his son and driving a Citroen. He was ubiquitous at the time. Played everywhere. Buddy Rich claimed that he was the best drummer. It is like the concept of winning the war in Iraq. How does one measure a win?
I do agree with you, but I can add that carlos santana is the only one able to improvise many versions for the same song, he is creative and good musician, I mean theoricaly
I just bought a live video of Eric Clapton 2001 w/ Steve Gadd. Clapton has the flavor of every song mixed perfectly, PRINCE doesn't have the oevre of great songs let alone great guitar songs but he is a great guitarist. I didn't say greatest but his fluidity, effortlessness, tone, speed; all that adds up to greatness as a musician and guitarist. I wish he would write some music I'd like to listen too. Carlton bores me and so does Robben Ford and I've seen Ford a few times in San Francisco.
Your English is horrific. I don't understand your words but I do dig on the music. My point is that there isn't a best guitarist ever. Clapton was simply an example of a great guitar player. I could name 50 great guitarists. So what? Enjoy the jam. I'm very familiar with Robben Ford. I've met him and seen him live 3 times. Up so close I could touch his guitar. Always best live.
Step on what? The distortion pedal? That's great playing by Larry and bringing the volume down where he plays the solo is just how they decided to approach the dynamics of the song.
Well I´ve heard Larry Carlton play hells benders out of his guitar, so why would anyone think that he always plays like he does here? (obviously they are in Japan, "arigato" means thanks)
@123imahomo - Jimi Hendrix learns God in Heaven to play at guitar ... Slash will learn the angels how it's the Paradise City , and Angus Young......Angus will go on his Highway to Hell and will learn the Devil, the true sound of the Hell Bells.
This is the best i´ve heard for years! unbelievably creative! Perfect groove, perfect technique - the whole band and especially robben ford and larry carlton! wow!!
wow this is my first glimpse of larry carlton as a guitarist of 4 years, and im just hearin first few of robben ford, dang i been missin out!! these fellas have some NICE NICE NICE style and phrasing and note choices omg i wonderin what kind of scales they bustin out.. im like a major mode/minor mode and blues and pent scale guy
oh been there...i liked it but not as much as the stuff he did with dennis chambers or dreyfus. Check his new album Electric Side. I think it's suppose to be competing with Greg Howes Sound Proof Fusion album. It's pretty good. Worth 8 bucks
you cant...your an idiot...these guys aren't doing anything that hasn't done before....and bireli shits on all of them....so fuck you and your useless opinion
Greetings, I'm also a Bireli Lagrene fan...If you like Bireli you might also like Sylvain Luc, check him out, he'll blow your head off. They often play together. Later
The words greatest guitar player should never be used if their not directed towards Bireli Lagrene....If you do not know about Bireli I suggest you educate yourself immediately
Does anyone know if there is a recording of this LC/RF tour? Was it in support of an album? LC says, "Origato" at the end- perhaps a Japanese recording exists?
Saw them is Sacramento. I thought Robben was going easy on Larry. I've seen that behavior from Robben before. He is not about blowing people out of the H2O. He will gauge his performance to compliment not compete.
The argument about who's better between SRV
and Robben is silly and childish.
Grow up you farts.
That's why they are great, they own their own voice on the instrument.
Besides when it really comes down to it everyone knows that bla bla can kill bla bla.
true. but robben has an awesome outstanding sound and voice aswell. And In my opinion he sings a bit better than Stevie. But Stevie is untouchable, no discussion.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Well, you little stink weeds, here's a little discussion anyway...
SRV was a narrow, simple minded, harsh playing Hendrix wantabe, who knew four major chords and couldn't play those very well and couldn't sing at all. Any decent solo he played was copied (badly) from jimi. These guys can actually play music. Stevie had strong hands and a small mind, and that's the kind of music he played. It says something about the fans he has garnered. No discussion...
wow dude... you sir are rather close minded, Jimi and SRV both took on two different takes of a similar style and did so to perfection, each in their own way... open your mind to some good guitar playing and you may learn a thing or two. For calling out all fans of SRV, you seem to be pretty "small minded"? yourself my friend
I'm going to tell you something.. If you play the instrument, you're a hack.. There's no way a serious cat could write what you did and have a deep understanding of playing a musical instrument.. News flash for you. Steve could play straight on Jazz He didn't choose it, but he could play 625 turn a rounds all day.. I do this shit for a living and I run into people like you all the time.. The problem is you just don't understand what you're hearing. That's all.ya poor kid.
What are the videos, songs or albums of stevie being narrow and simple minded harsh playing wanabe? I really want to seem em. Cause I cant think for the life of me when he's ever done that. And you probaly actually believe that anyone would even care. Baisically songboy40 is absolutley right. and you cant deny it. Its a fact. Edgded in stone. The Holy grail. Written in plain english. Every word the truth. Not a doubt in anyones mind. Udisputed. King of Kings. Now whos being silly?
Wow--I have to confess that I was never a Robbin Ford fan, and although I appreciated Carlton's talent and humility, I never really cared much for his music because I just didn't like the smooth jazz sound. But these guys are great here. Very different styles and yet they compliment each other great. Carlton has almost a keyboard phrasing sensibility. I also love how Carlton takes a moment to compliment Ford after his solo. That is really cool.
Nice guitar playing...but more entertaining still is the dancing. Larry Carlton looks like a giant electric mannequin...a big bag of fiberglass bones struttin' around out there. Now imagine these guys playing air guitar to this song--with all that grimacing and wincing and flopping around? What expression! A new elevation of the art form! They would make Britney Spears look like...well, Britney Spears! Why does L. Carlton make me think of LA? Did you know some people have a phobia of mannequins?
Geez, you're right. They rule my world. What was I thinking??? For a minute there I thought John Mclaughlin ruled my world, or maybe Steve Morse. Guess those guys just ruled my guitar world, but they don't do that cool mannequin stuff. Really, you kind of have to respect Jimi Hendrix. After all, he was able to smash his guitar and light it on fire. It's clear he knew the real value of a guitar and understood guitar playing in its transcendental form. But, you know, kudos to LC and RF, of course.
I hear ya!..I love to play and hear all kinds of sounds - good noise is good noise..it depends on what your feelin!..some guys are amazing if you sat and played with them - but maybe boring on records - cuz there is so much to hear, and so little time!..I follow my ears - and no one will ever bee cooler than Jimi.
Well, I feel that I have to say something here that may be very unpopular shortly lol I found this song and arrangement rather uninspired and sleepy-sounding. I absolutely LOVE Robben Ford and Larry Carlton however. Larry's playing IMHO has been lacking the fire and distinction of his early session years in the 70's ("Don't Take Me Alive" from Steely Dan anyone?) but Robben's playing on this Track helped me from not looking for the next Robben Ford post here. Robben is always SO tasty. Cheers!
I love Larrys Steely Dan years.. Prob because Steely Dan is my favorite group by far and away.. Thats how i discovered Larry (through Steely Dan) and i generally like his stuff, new and old.
do you really work for the government lol?

Buddy guy, Rory Gallagher, Clapton (I wasnt a big fan of his but after cream, deric and the dominos, playing with the band... waw he's great), Chet atkins!, jimmy page (if only because i'm a zeppelin fan, but he made some of the best music ever, so he's in my top 5)

hey guys!!!
let's enjoy the great music from these two legends.
1.the tone
2.the phrasing
3.the feel.
there's no way to compare the legends n the
modern n current players.

because they have brains and Yngwie Malmsteen only has nerves

@nckey42 yeah sorry man but sincerely yngwie was in my opinion one of the most talented people to ever pick up a guitar, buthe didnt really have the spirit of it like them oldschool guys right there.

@MultiGrandiose yngwie malmsteen just plays really fast. he plays scales and arpeggios with no class or style. he is a great guitar player, but these guys are great musicians

Nightsurf59 2 years ago 9
YES!!!
nckey42 2 years ago
EQ...
Did Larry succeed?
grandaudiopoobah 2 years ago
As soon as people start using the "best ever" label, I tune out. I have seen all of the players mentioned and none of them is my favorite. I have heard many, many guitarists in my life and if there is a such a thing as the best ever, chances are you have never heard of him or her.
phattsunshine 2 years ago
fallen, you must have fallen on your head.

So what? Don't argue about it just enjoy it.
eqsmooth 2 years ago
Well I dont know . Ford yes a pretty uncomfortable solo but great , larry larry larry leave the drummer alone and get on . love listening to larry on records but when I watch him at these performances I dont get the same buzz at all .
pvail06 2 years ago
oh, pul-EEZE.

Watch and listen to Prince play the solo on While my Guitar Gently Weeps and tell me he's not one of the greatest.
eqsmooth 2 years ago 3
hey man the best guitarist is carlos santana
TheRoyaleagle 2 years ago
IOne of my favorite songs is Black Magic Woman. Peter Green wrote that song. Indeed he is a great guitaris but no one in the world can claim to be the best at any instrument. I have seen Santana in my neighborhood back home in Marin County but never saw him perform live. He was shopping w/his son and driving a Citroen. He was ubiquitous at the time. Played everywhere. Buddy Rich claimed that he was the best drummer. It is like the concept of winning the war in Iraq. How does one measure a win?
eqsmooth 2 years ago
I do agree with you, but I can add that carlos santana is the only one able to improvise many versions for the same song, he is creative and good musician, I mean theoricaly
TheRoyaleagle 2 years ago
the greatest no.
prince is ok but not the greatest!
keep cool
one solo not make one guitarrist ok man.
jordanquintao 2 years ago
I just bought a live video of Eric Clapton 2001 w/ Steve Gadd. Clapton has the flavor of every song mixed perfectly, PRINCE doesn't have the oevre of great songs let alone great guitar songs but he is a great guitarist. I didn't say greatest but his fluidity, effortlessness, tone, speed; all that adds up to greatness as a musician and guitarist. I wish he would write some music I'd like to listen too. Carlton bores me and so does Robben Ford and I've seen Ford a few times in San Francisco.
eqsmooth 2 years ago
clapton and both of these guy are different.
only people that really appreciate music can understand what these guy playing. while clapton music sounds like pop.

No discussion...
johnnylance 3 years ago
wow dude... you sir are rather close minded, Jimi and SRV both took on two different takes of a similar style and did so to perfection, each in their own way... open your mind to some good guitar playing and you may learn a thing or two. For calling out all fans of SRV, you seem to be pretty "small minded"? yourself my friend
goose3249 3 years ago 2
Well, Johnny,,
I'm going to tell you something..

Ozoneum1 3 years ago
Larry Carlton rulez your world! - and you know it!..Robben is so wonderful! they deserve much respect!..electric mannequin?..is that a band?
eltee80 3 years ago
Geez, you're right. They rule my world. What was I thinking??? For a minute there I thought John Mclaughlin ruled my world, or maybe Steve Morse. Guess those guys just ruled my guitar world, but they don't do that cool mannequin stuff. Really, you kind of have to respect Jimi Hendrix. After all, he was able to smash his guitar and light it on fire. It's clear he knew the real value of a guitar and understood guitar playing in its transcendental form. But, you know, kudos to LC and RF, of course.
Ozoneum1 3 years ago

Cheers!
